The ride aboard the SS Tidal was something quite spectacular for Joseph, getting to experience the raw power of the ferry for the first time in years. Memory served him a recollection that he may have had a ride when his shoes weren't a size 18+, but surely the power of the ferry did not stack up to the wild ride of the Tidal. Even with its speed, the giant could walk on the deck smoother than a Slaking's nap schedule. All of these positive thoughts made disembarking from the vessel bittersweet, but the visit to Lilycove had the air of business this time. It would reflect poorly on his demeanor if he kept his potential Ranger captain waiting.

The poor boat ramp creaked under Joseph's weight, but the man got to the port's sturdier roads safely. He knew that his body was on the heavy set side, some might even say fashioned after a Snorlax, but Joseph had a theory! Said theory had to do with the numerous amounts of youngins hanging off his arms as he walked on down. Though the SS Tidal was a quick ride, children's interest waned even quicker! So he made it a point to play with the young future of Hoenn, teaching them some tricks with a lasso and even some ranchwork stuff. Nothing crazy like branding! Kids ought to start with the basic knots and work their way up to the crazy cowboy staples. Never know when a good knot could mean the difference between a snag or a tear in the field.

Like all good things, he scooted the children off his frame and let them return to their kind folks. One was enjoyed the ride so much between his belly and chest that she was plumed passed out. Joseph carefully tucked his large fingers under the sleeping child and handed her over to a smiling mother and father. They expressed their thanks to the ranger cadet, to which he could only oblige by tipping his Stetson to. Seeing that his children obligations were done and there was still a Ranger Captain to find, Joseph turned about and began looking around for someone else wearing the League uniform. Best plan he figured to get his bearings straight!

it definitely isn't too difficult to find him — how could it be when the man literally towers above everyone else? it's with an amused smile that lance approaches, soon stepping into the shadow cast by the cadet.

"joseph burnside!"

there's no need to even question the man's identity. he simply peers up at him, offering his hand to shake. hopefully, it won't be crushed.

"i'm lance, captain here. how was the journey?"

He resisted the urge to scratch his beard before crouching forward a bit to shake his captain's hand. From the backside of Lance, it would've looked as if Joseph was trying to do a real-life vice grip on the chiseled ranger. A gentle enveloping and cordial shake later, Joseph accepted the greeting with a country-proud grin. Three firm shakes and he retracted his handshake, just like his papi taught him to. [break][break]

"Was just fine Captain Lance. You'dve never thunk Rocket had a city under their power given how uneventful the trip was. Sorry for the slight delay tho." Joseph "There was a request along the Route 112 Daycare for some physical labor and I happened to be the only Mamoswine within two Jigglypuffs of a click."[break][break]

The cadet saluted his superior properly, muscles switching from their resting state to an alert one. It was here that, should the Captain be so inclined, Joseph's physique was in perfect form. The Snorlax-esque waistline locked up tight and his burly arms flexed its well-tested bis and tris. Maybe a quad or two huffed as well, given that you need a strong base to hold up a man of this stature. With the time of the day, one could have sworn Joseph's form was sparkling.[break][break]

He broke off from his salute and asked his superior, "So Captain, if you don't mind me asking, what made you want to join the Ranger corps?"

three firm shakes later and he's free. his hand retracts, sliding into a pocket to recover.

"no problem at all. sounds like they were in very capable hands."

the salute is returned, though his lacks the same strength and poise shown by cadet burnside here. one could almost say his was lazy.

"come on. let's walk and talk."

he gives the man a pat on his shoulder before leading them away.

"well, i've always been out and about since i was young, so i've come to have a certain appreciation for nature and pokemon. it only seemed natural at the time."

memories come back, happy and mostly warm apart from the cold nights out camping.

"Tell you the truth Captain Lance, my reason is mostly practical reasons." the giant replied, scratching his beard a bit, "I didn't really start my Pokemon journey till now. Mostly been a farmhand and figured the structure of the Rangers was a better way of going bout this whole schtick than wandering like a plumin' Spinda city to city."[break][break]

The sign up was pretty simple. Crossgate was close enough to a Ranger regional headquarters, so a march on over to enlist didn't too arduous. Using the tiny pencils for the forms put up a greater challenge than making the choice. He was afforded different places to get the ranger orientation, with him settling on Lilycove City. One was to take in the scenery, the other was to have an excuse to extend help as a cadet. [break][break]

"Came here for this Ranger orientation bit and to offer any help to the Lilycove Ranger corps. Not sure if that meant it's an assignment or whut, but I reckon you can sort that bit out no?" he asked, keeping pace with the Captain with his heavy steps.

it's a fair reason and it's one that makes sense. joining the rangers would allow joseph to travel, to train, and to get paid doing it. not everyone's able to afford the luxurious lifestyle of a traveling trainer.

"definitely. we can do a quick assignment right now."

seeing as how they're already near the ocean, he leads them towards the beach.

"assuming we were in the desert and you stumbled across a dehydrated pokemon, how would you help it?"

Knowledge check out of nowhere caught Joseph slackjawed slightly, but he anticipated something along this line when the regional leader for the Ranger Corps was the one who greeted him. It was a peculiar scenario, since his familiarity with them sandy dunes was wholly lacking. He'd be worried for himself actually, as even traversing the soft sands of Dewport sometimes gave him difficulty. Probably the reason why he pushed his Tauros and Girafarig hard to be able to move on uneven terrain. Still, it would look bad if he kept Captain Lance waiting any longer, so he'd have to give him the best possible answer a Burnside can offer.[break][break]

Hoisting over his shoulder was a brown, well-broken in, leather rucksack. A dust cloud kicked up when the bag hit the ground, estimating at least over 100 pounds of gear was casually being carried around. A sign of a laborer. Flicking the top of the bag, a quiet click could be heard as the duffle opened up to reveal a tightly packed assortment of items. Though it was layered, the outsides of the rucksack had two water cans the size of the sort that ought to be on a motor vehicle. Tubing, first aid kit, and rations were in the rucksack. Tools finally clanked a little when the giant began digging through his organized mess for a few things. Taking out what appeared to be a field blanket made of Mareep wool and a cutue spray bottle with a Wailmer nozzle, Joseph began his answer with these items in hand.[break][break]

"Dehydration be a mid level problem that can stir itself into bigger problems. Pokemon unique anatomy gotta be taken into consideration to but assuming it's a field-type, I'd first set-up a bit of shade. Get that poor Pokemon out of the sun and into the shade so that its body can begin regulating its core temperature again."[break][break]

"If I can tie this here blanket to something I will. Otherwise, gonna rely on my Dhelmise to hover for a bit so we can do a quick rehydration. Usually I'll have a Pokemon or two helping me, either to help with the care or keeping guard. Ain't good to be gettin' jumped quicker than a Zangoose on a Seviper, for me nor my patient. Once the shade is set to apply some passive cooldown, I'd be moving in slowly to try and earn some trust as a friend rather than a predator. Nothing worse than getting your tar kicked out of yah from the patient cuz they couldn't tell you're trying to help'em."[break][break]

Joseph took off his glasses and revealed a mostly healed scar mark around his eye. "A younger me learned this the hard way. If I had one of them aromatherapy Pokemon or something like that, I'd probably use that for consistency on rowdy ones. Else, letting the Pokemon get familiar with a big ol' me, especially cuz I am kinda intimidating size wise, is key to me being able to get close enough to hydrate it. Sometimes it'll be easy enough to give them a saucer of water to drink. Most times, like on the ranch, I'll need to feed it to them slowly till the Pokemon gets that strength to git up an do it themselves."[break][break]

He wanted to mention that he usually had a small mixture similar to an IV bag in case the scenario was real bad, but Joseph figured that would be too much information. Ranch work threw a lot of scenarios into his lap and answering them really was focused on what you had at the moment. Right now, Joseph's pack was well-stocked with homemade remedies. He'd be more than happy to oblige if the good Captain asks for the information, but squawking too much comes off badly to people in his experience.

wow. that's far more detailed of an answer than lance expected, and he can't help but dip his head in acknowledgement after. joseph's definitely earned his respect after that.

Seems like the good Captain enjoyed his answer, so Joseph had earned himself yet another hypothetical question. This one targeting a Pokemon who ought to be able to swim like a champ, but now was flubbing harder than a splashing Magikarp. The big ranger was confident in his lifting power on land, but swimming with weight similar to your own was a challenge in itself without some sort of aid. Captain Lance also specifically asked for a Pokemon related answer, to which there was only one real safe answer. Joseph reached for for his right glove horseshoe, which was wider than his left. Slotted where the studs ought to be were grooves for Pokeballs in their miniature state.[break][break]
Taking the second slot Pokeball, Joseph popped it open with a flash of light. The expected manifestation of a Pokemon began to happen after the first few seconds of shapeless light, then taking shape into an anchor. A slight trill came out of a mouthless face of the barnacle crusted Dhelmise, who happily hovered about Joseph while swinging its anchor like a pendulum.[break][break]
"I'm lackin' in critters that are good in deep sea battles, but thankfully this biggum here is pretty flexible! We'd use the anchor as a buoy zone of sorts, getting it close enough for the Machamp to hold onto the chain. Maybe even stand on the anchor while we reel it in. Dhelmise is purdy strong by itself, but this one likes a lot of hands on attention don'tcha?"[break][break]
It coo'd when Joseph rubbed its steering wheel head, floating about closer.[break][break]
