Joseph Burnside was born to a family of bird-type trainers in Crossgate Town. The town was located between Littleroot Town and Fortree City, with a growing reputation for its powerful wind speeds and favor towards Flying type Pokemon.
Despite his outward appearance, he is in his mid thirties. Joseph always had a larger, more mature looking build. Often compared to the mountain climber trainer stereotype, despite the man not having any affinity for Rock-types.
Also betraying his appearances, Joseph is physically strong and has a surprising amount of endurance. Still, mountains do not move quickly and Joseph takes pride in pacing himself.
His first Pokemon was Tauros, whom he grew attached to during his younger years helping a relative's pasture lands. Calm spirited but steadfast, it didn't take much to see why the two hit it off so well.
Dhelmise was Joseph's second Pokemon, found off the coast of Dewford Town. Joseph was taking a vacation with friends and family when he encountered the large Pokemon during a swim.
For unknown reasons to Joseph, Dhelmise enjoys being carried and wielded like a piece of equipment. It was never considered a problem for Joseph's strength, due to his physicality, but the trainer admits it's rather cool to lasso in things around the house with an anchor instead of a rope. Dhelmise seems to find it enjoyable too.
The story of his third Pokemon, Girafarig, is less quirky. He came across a stray while tending to the fields and decided to capture the Pokemon. He had initially failed to weaken the Girafarig due to his lack of trainer experience, so his Pokeball was caught by the Pokemon's rear end's psychic power. It was launched back with considerable force, smashing half of Joseph's glasses.
There is a lasting scar, but Joseph does have vision out of the eye where Girafarig threw the Pokeball. He keeps that side of his glasses tinted as a badge to remember the encounter. Girafarig also enjoys the fact its trainer would also be two-toned like itself.
Joseph's family convinced him to go and pursue his own passions instead of settling for the farm life. Though they felt that they robbed Joseph of the adventures many young Pokemon trainers' have, he did not see it that way. Seeing the need to have a bit of order at this stage in his life rather than be an aimless marauder, Joseph enlisted as a cadet into the league's ranger corps.
Due to his older appearance, many refer to him as the uncle of the corps.
