His compatriot had quite an array of Water types. Really was a night and day difference compared to what was in his own line-up, which means Joseph had to consider a different way to be a help. Dhelmise was a strong contender and probably wouldn't take all that much damage from the varmits of the sea, but this wasn't a defend a key point. It was a protect a flock of living beings from becoming like their Galarian counterpart. The cadet took a step into one of two motor boats available for the trainers to use. In this situation, even if the boat looked awfully tiny carrying Joseph, it stayed afloat even with extra cargo being loaded onto it.[break][break]

He had four pole-like shapes bound with a thin, translucent mesh loaded on before he started the motor. His Dhelmise hovered behind its trainer and happily swung about while waiting for new commands. Before Joseph drove out past the floating pink shapes grouping near the dock, he looked over towards his partner's direction and tossed him a hand radio.[break][break]

"It's already tuned to our frequency. I'm gonna go check on the sea barriers for this reserve. There's bout two layers of it as you head out into open waters and the reserve rangers were saying some may need to be replaced. Clean off the barnacles and what not. I'll ping you on the horn when I'm heading in or if something comes up." Joseph explained before putting the boat into low-gear. [break][break]

Water operations wasn't anything too familiar to Joseph, so he'd assume that exposing the fact humans would be in the area would startle wild Pokemon into action. The dossier said something bout Huntails and Joseph only knew what the field guides said about these vicious preadators. He'd have to rely on Dhelmise and those water-types from Greyson, but there was a job that even a landlubber like him could still do. A few minutes driving out to the edge of the inland shores, the boat was parked near one of the floating poles semi-submerged. Sticking his gloved hand in to reel in the sea wall, his boat struggled to stay level from all the moving Joseph was doing. Joseph staggered forward somewhat as a shadow zipped by. Joseph raised an eyebrow at the occurrence.[break][break]

He quickly hoisted the rest of the sea wall onto his vessel and confirmed a suspicion. Grabbing his radio, Joseph got on the channel to warn one of the sea varmits breached the perimiter.[break][break]

"Greyson! Got one varmit heading on in to the flock! Probably should be all tangled up on the 2nd wall, but the critter chewed a whole out here!" he quickly called in.[break][break]

Joseph wanted to rush back and support, but living such a large hole in the perimeter would only invite more Huntail in. Instead, he ordered his Dhelmise to weigh anchor and drag along the sea bed to create a groove for the bottom pole of the seawall to nestle into. It'd be at least another three minutes or so before Joseph could rush back, but he'd hope that Greyson was on the extermination duty.

This Gabrielle was every bit of a smiling Sunflora as he anticipated, wasting no time breaking down the formalities between strangers. His stetson was already off, but the countryman placed his left hand over his heart and gave a courteous bow to the young trainer. "Much obliged Miss Gabby." he'd reply with before following the caretaker outside. His tinted shades kept his eyes nice and squint-free when stepping back out into the sun. The warm rays felt nice when you get a nice graze from the route's passing breeze. Truly was a great environment for raising young Pokemon.[break][break]

Some Pokemon Joseph saw, was finding refuge in one of the larger trees spread out through the field. Not enough of large trees to spread the wealth, which was an opportune time to make use of a roughrider's camping supplies. While he trusted that the jolly chirps from Gabrielle was a byproduct of her playing with baby Pokemon, the cadet opened up his obscenely large rucksack to take out two foldout poles and a tarp. Sticking the poles through two rings at the corners and planting them into the ground, Joseph secured the other side with bungie hooks to a tall sapling. Not weak enough to crumble under the tension nor developed enough to be a standalone shade spot. By the time Joseph was done, his little shady rest zone was fit to comfortably cover his Dhelmise! [break][break]

The cowboy walked over to the watering hole with a drinking barrel large enough for a Ponyta on his shoulder. Joseph scooped the long wooden drinking well full of fresh water and transported it back to his shady rest spot. All that was left to do was keep the area chilled, which needed one of his own to maintain.[break][break]

Joseph's large fingers wrapped around the fifth ring of his glove, taking out a Pokeball to release. With a pop, the white light revealed an Amaura that coo'd upon manifesting. It scanned the open, green pastures, taking in the relaxing atmosphere. He pet the ancient Pokemon's head gently, pushing down very lightly to encourage the Amaura to rest. The long necked Pokemon followed Joseph's call and curled up for a nap. And shortly after, the napping Amaura began to emit a nice, cool air from it. Joseph dubbed it the "portable air conditioner" strategy!

Seems like the good Captain enjoyed his answer, so Joseph had earned himself yet another hypothetical question. This one targeting a Pokemon who ought to be able to swim like a champ, but now was flubbing harder than a splashing Magikarp. The big ranger was confident in his lifting power on land, but swimming with weight similar to your own was a challenge in itself without some sort of aid. Captain Lance also specifically asked for a Pokemon related answer, to which there was only one real safe answer. Joseph reached for for his right glove horseshoe, which was wider than his left. Slotted where the studs ought to be were grooves for Pokeballs in their miniature state.[break][break]
Taking the second slot Pokeball, Joseph popped it open with a flash of light. The expected manifestation of a Pokemon began to happen after the first few seconds of shapeless light, then taking shape into an anchor. A slight trill came out of a mouthless face of the barnacle crusted Dhelmise, who happily hovered about Joseph while swinging its anchor like a pendulum.[break][break]
"I'm lackin' in critters that are good in deep sea battles, but thankfully this biggum here is pretty flexible! We'd use the anchor as a buoy zone of sorts, getting it close enough for the Machamp to hold onto the chain. Maybe even stand on the anchor while we reel it in. Dhelmise is purdy strong by itself, but this one likes a lot of hands on attention don'tcha?"[break][break]
It coo'd when Joseph rubbed its steering wheel head, floating about closer.[break][break]
"What else you got for me boss?"

Knowledge check out of nowhere caught Joseph slackjawed slightly, but he anticipated something along this line when the regional leader for the Ranger Corps was the one who greeted him. It was a peculiar scenario, since his familiarity with them sandy dunes was wholly lacking. He'd be worried for himself actually, as even traversing the soft sands of Dewport sometimes gave him difficulty. Probably the reason why he pushed his Tauros and Girafarig hard to be able to move on uneven terrain. Still, it would look bad if he kept Captain Lance waiting any longer, so he'd have to give him the best possible answer a Burnside can offer.[break][break]

Hoisting over his shoulder was a brown, well-broken in, leather rucksack. A dust cloud kicked up when the bag hit the ground, estimating at least over 100 pounds of gear was casually being carried around. A sign of a laborer. Flicking the top of the bag, a quiet click could be heard as the duffle opened up to reveal a tightly packed assortment of items. Though it was layered, the outsides of the rucksack had two water cans the size of the sort that ought to be on a motor vehicle. Tubing, first aid kit, and rations were in the rucksack. Tools finally clanked a little when the giant began digging through his organized mess for a few things. Taking out what appeared to be a field blanket made of Mareep wool and a cutue spray bottle with a Wailmer nozzle, Joseph began his answer with these items in hand.[break][break]

"Dehydration be a mid level problem that can stir itself into bigger problems. Pokemon unique anatomy gotta be taken into consideration to but assuming it's a field-type, I'd first set-up a bit of shade. Get that poor Pokemon out of the sun and into the shade so that its body can begin regulating its core temperature again."[break][break]

"If I can tie this here blanket to something I will. Otherwise, gonna rely on my Dhelmise to hover for a bit so we can do a quick rehydration. Usually I'll have a Pokemon or two helping me, either to help with the care or keeping guard. Ain't good to be gettin' jumped quicker than a Zangoose on a Seviper, for me nor my patient. Once the shade is set to apply some passive cooldown, I'd be moving in slowly to try and earn some trust as a friend rather than a predator. Nothing worse than getting your tar kicked out of yah from the patient cuz they couldn't tell you're trying to help'em."[break][break]

Joseph took off his glasses and revealed a mostly healed scar mark around his eye. "A younger me learned this the hard way. If I had one of them aromatherapy Pokemon or something like that, I'd probably use that for consistency on rowdy ones. Else, letting the Pokemon get familiar with a big ol' me, especially cuz I am kinda intimidating size wise, is key to me being able to get close enough to hydrate it. Sometimes it'll be easy enough to give them a saucer of water to drink. Most times, like on the ranch, I'll need to feed it to them slowly till the Pokemon gets that strength to git up an do it themselves."[break][break]

He wanted to mention that he usually had a small mixture similar to an IV bag in case the scenario was real bad, but Joseph figured that would be too much information. Ranch work threw a lot of scenarios into his lap and answering them really was focused on what you had at the moment. Right now, Joseph's pack was well-stocked with homemade remedies. He'd be more than happy to oblige if the good Captain asks for the information, but squawking too much comes off badly to people in his experience.

Wiping several beads of sweat off his grand brow, Joseph couldn't help but turn his head towards the direction of the speaker when addressed to. The voice belonged to a young man dressed in your everyday gear, perhaps a tad light for the typical mountaineer. If he were a betting man, Joseph might've guessed this man was out for a leisurely hike. Or a light workout after taking a second gander at the sweat stains soaking through his shirt. He guffawed a little. Joseph couldn't help but feel a bit better after seeing a young man finding some difficulty in this trek too![break][break]

"Howdy ser." Jospeh replied back, "Glad to see I'm not the only crazy Bouffalant thinking it was a good day to trek up this confounding mountain! Guwfaafafaa![break][break]

With a small heave, the older man hoisted himself back onto his boots. He clutched the straps of his large duffel bag and approached the stranger. Few steps later, he was close enough for a handshake and initiated the gesture. His large, Tauros horseshoe decorated glove extended completely and stood fast for a response from the other man. Tacking on a "Name's Joseph Burnside." and you had yourself a traditional country greeting.[break][break]

Rustling sounds ruined the moment, as sounds of a pebbles rolling down the mountain caught the attention of Joseph's Heracross. She snapped to attention and had her heart shaped horn pointed in the direction of the sound and scowled. Emerging from the rocky formations lining the mountain was a slow hopping, orange speckled blob. It wiggled as its tiny tentacles as the Pokemon dragged a pair of blue boxing gloves. Joseph cusped his chin while taking a gander at the wild Pokemon, eventually recognizing it as a Clobbopus. A tiny tyke with a mean uppercut for sure, who happened to be an ideal opponent for the greenhorn Heracross he accompanied. Joseph opted to give up the initiative, noticing his Heracross following the source in the sky for a moving shadow.[break][break]

A Xatu. This green flier frequented the farm since he was a lad, and often were easy to feed scraps to. This one came down to perch on the jagged walls of the route, observing the gathering taking place. A less than ideal situation was brewing, as Xatus weren't hot-heads like a Spearow in sweltering summer days. They might be genuinely curious, or opportunistically patient. He had no doubt a bad play would spell a bad end. He'd trust his Tauros or Dhelmise for a two on one, but a new, untested bond with Heracross put doubts in getting a victory without serious harm taking place.[break][break]

"Sorry to bother you friend," Joseph asked, formulating a plan in his head. "Might I offer a joint effort against these fellas?"

"That's my name. You must be the officer I'm attached to for this mission." the giant answered, saluting his superior.[break][break]

The behemoth turned around and showed that his early arrival came with a bit of perks. Boats were prepared, necessary scuba gear were prepped and sized. Even someone as large as Joseph had the appropriate equipment, though his air tank looked like a pillow in proportion to his body size. He noticed a hand being extended by Greyson, which he responded to with a smile and extending his own hand. A friendly gesture that looked more like a Machamp trying to seize a Ratata off the ground. Nothing crazy happened however, as Joseph gently enveloped Greyson's hand and shook it with a firm grip. No intention of exercising superiority of one's ego, but a firm handshake filled with the respect country folk often have for their brethren.[break][break]

After letting go of Greyson's hand, he took a step back to let his superior inspect the prep work done. "Boat and gear should be ready to go. Spare tanks on board and radios already tuned to the shore's frequencies. Once my Dhelmise finishes its quick patrol of the area, me thinks our ship off should be smoother than a polished Omanyte shell!"[break][break]

On cue, something splashed right out of the water in a small salty plume. The screeching glee of a heavy weight Pokemon could be heard as a shadow quickly approached where the trainers were standing. Joseph raised his arm and opened up the left hand. Zooming by his hand momentarily was a wide blur for only a moment, then gripped suddenly. The man swung what was now visible as an anchor nimbly around till he planted it on his side. A gleeful series of giggles could be heard as Joseph reeled in the barnacle crusted chains into a loop. When he was done, a Dhelmise happily lifted itself off the dock and hovered around Joseph, who was dusting off his gloves.[break][break]

"Sorry bout that. Dhelmise gets a bit excitable but should be a reliable point to help us rastle in these pesky Pokemon botherin' them Corsola."

"Tell you the truth Captain Lance, my reason is mostly practical reasons." the giant replied, scratching his beard a bit, "I didn't really start my Pokemon journey till now. Mostly been a farmhand and figured the structure of the Rangers was a better way of going bout this whole schtick than wandering like a plumin' Spinda city to city."[break][break]

The sign up was pretty simple. Crossgate was close enough to a Ranger regional headquarters, so a march on over to enlist didn't too arduous. Using the tiny pencils for the forms put up a greater challenge than making the choice. He was afforded different places to get the ranger orientation, with him settling on Lilycove City. One was to take in the scenery, the other was to have an excuse to extend help as a cadet. [break][break]

"Came here for this Ranger orientation bit and to offer any help to the Lilycove Ranger corps. Not sure if that meant it's an assignment or whut, but I reckon you can sort that bit out no?" he asked, keeping pace with the Captain with his heavy steps.

Confragus roasting on a smoldering day, Joseph could not remember the last time he had to heave himself up into the rough necks of a mountain trails for anything. He was trucking along nice and steady, but you don't just heave a mountain up another one so easily. In fact, you wouldn't be doing such a braixen sort of thing in the first place unless there was good reason for it! Something that he unfortunately had, as it was a personal creed to do a bonding test with a new companion in his line-up.[break][break]

A purdy thing, this Heracross was! She came into his party after some rough housing with Dhelmise, leading to the heart horned vixen being the newest member to the Burnside patrol. And as a custom of his, Joseph made sure to do something special to commemorate the occasion! Tauros and him plowed several acres of land by hand, Dhelmise was part of an inland tow for a malfunctioning tugger, and Girafarig...made the big man shudder. He could handle physical labor but Girafarig's bonding moment really was a mental trip. It only confirmed that the mind was truly a vast plain that only a few could comprehend. None of them likely human either.[break][break]

Still, he was hooving it up here with his new Heracross, who seemed to be thrilled at the thought of training in these austere ridges. Jagged Pass to be precise, but Joseph had a hunkering a little bit of focused battle training ought to get the blood pumping. No sense faltering now when his Heracross was thrusting her horn around like it was a jabbing machine. Kinda made him think of some things he'd need to refine on to match his style of battle. As the two came into a clearing connected to the network of thin paths, he took a moment to park on a flat rock and take a swig of water. A separate bottle of clear sap was offered to Heracross, who gladly took in the sustenance.[break][break]
