The ride aboard the SS Tidal was something quite spectacular for Joseph, getting to experience the raw power of the ferry for the first time in years. Memory served him a recollection that he may have had a ride when his shoes weren't a size 18+, but surely the power of the ferry did not stack up to the wild ride of the Tidal. Even with its speed, the giant could walk on the deck smoother than a Slaking's nap schedule. All of these positive thoughts made disembarking from the vessel bittersweet, but the visit to Lilycove had the air of business this time. It would reflect poorly on his demeanor if he kept his potential Ranger captain waiting.

The poor boat ramp creaked under Joseph's weight, but the man got to the port's sturdier roads safely. He knew that his body was on the heavy set side, some might even say fashioned after a Snorlax, but Joseph had a theory! Said theory had to do with the numerous amounts of youngins hanging off his arms as he walked on down. Though the SS Tidal was a quick ride, children's interest waned even quicker! So he made it a point to play with the young future of Hoenn, teaching them some tricks with a lasso and even some ranchwork stuff. Nothing crazy like branding! Kids ought to start with the basic knots and work their way up to the crazy cowboy staples. Never know when a good knot could mean the difference between a snag or a tear in the field.

Like all good things, he scooted the children off his frame and let them return to their kind folks. One was enjoyed the ride so much between his belly and chest that she was plumed passed out. Joseph carefully tucked his large fingers under the sleeping child and handed her over to a smiling mother and father. They expressed their thanks to the ranger cadet, to which he could only oblige by tipping his Stetson to. Seeing that his children obligations were done and there was still a Ranger Captain to find, Joseph turned about and began looking around for someone else wearing the League uniform. Best plan he figured to get his bearings straight!

"Hrm?" responded a raspy, yet gentle voice. "What little ray offa Solrock just bounced on in?"[break][break]

Standing before her little ways past the entrance would be a lumbering man that had been talking to one of the workers of the daycare. Prior to the jubilant entry of Gabrielle, Joseph and the daycare man were on their way out back to discuss what sort of help would be needed for the day-to-day operations. Newer rangers hardly get sent to the frontlines of conflict and the man was perfectly fine with it. Even the simplest of tasks can be of value to someone's life and it was not his right to say it was any less important than another. That's how people get too full of themselves and find a heap of trouble for their efforts. The daycare worker and Joseph barely stepped through the door cover when they heard "Hello!!"[break][break]

Taking a good once over of the gal, Joseph let out a burly 'gufaw' from his belly and patted the daycare worker on the back. Seems some good Samaritan decided to answer the call for help quicker than the Rangers could update their work citations! He made his way towards the peppy ball of energy and offered a handshake with his greetings. His gigantic, horseshoe covered glove extended downward towards Gabrielle slowly and invited a response.[break][break]

"Well ain't you as fast as a Scorbunny scurrying off for somethin' to kick? The name's Joseph Burnside, Ranger cadet, and I was coming out here to see what exactly these fine folks needed out of their temporary worker. You know, makes sure the listin' is all correct and stuff for them watchful Noctowls." the big man gufawed. "Guess I was too slow on the draw for watchful youngins like yerself!"[break][break]

The daycare worker also introduced themselves and invited the two trainers to follow him out back. Joseph offered Gabrielle to go ahead first and would follow suit after.

If the quality of men could be determined by the chisel in their step and the breadth of their heart, Joseph would be among the top. He may not be the fastest word slinger this side of Hoenn, but this behemoth offers no less than common decency to all who cross him. Be it his fellow rangers or members of Team Rocket, Joseph is a firm believer that a choice made by an individual is better than one not made at all.
He can be overbearing in the will to care for an individual, at times stubborn, but that's simply his protective instinct flaring up. A trait that shows itself best in the operating field. [break][break]

This gentle soul rallies into action, showing an unusually level of calmness under pressure. As a wrangler of Tauros, he often had to help bring the young bulls in line when their attitude was unforgivable in the herd. These steady nerves may agitate some of his more excitable comrades, but a look into Joseph's eyes will show an unwavering spirit ready to be the barrier between his team and opposition. Despite the perceived confidence, Joseph has several insecurities. His age compared to the young bucks does concern him slightly, as does his build. He does not shy away from his physique but knows it is intimidating to deal with a six foot ten, robust man. All the same, he is an advocate to better himself and tries his best to get along with others. Even if some of the city talk gets him all sorts of confused. [break][break]

Joseph Burnside was born to a family of bird-type trainers in Crossgate Town. The town was located between Littleroot Town and Fortree City, with a growing reputation for its powerful wind speeds and favor towards Flying type Pokemon.
Despite his outward appearance, he is in his mid thirties. Joseph always had a larger, more mature looking build. Often compared to the mountain climber trainer stereotype, despite the man not having any affinity for Rock-types.
Also betraying his appearances, Joseph is physically strong and has a surprising amount of endurance. Still, mountains do not move quickly and Joseph takes pride in pacing himself.
His first Pokemon was Tauros, whom he grew attached to during his younger years helping a relative's pasture lands. Calm spirited but steadfast, it didn't take much to see why the two hit it off so well.
Dhelmise was Joseph's second Pokemon, found off the coast of Dewford Town. Joseph was taking a vacation with friends and family when he encountered the large Pokemon during a swim.
For unknown reasons to Joseph, Dhelmise enjoys being carried and wielded like a piece of equipment. It was never considered a problem for Joseph's strength, due to his physicality, but the trainer admits it's rather cool to lasso in things around the house with an anchor instead of a rope. Dhelmise seems to find it enjoyable too.
The story of his third Pokemon, Girafarig, is less quirky. He came across a stray while tending to the fields and decided to capture the Pokemon. He had initially failed to weaken the Girafarig due to his lack of trainer experience, so his Pokeball was caught by the Pokemon's rear end's psychic power. It was launched back with considerable force, smashing half of Joseph's glasses.
There is a lasting scar, but Joseph does have vision out of the eye where Girafarig threw the Pokeball. He keeps that side of his glasses tinted as a badge to remember the encounter. Girafarig also enjoys the fact its trainer would also be two-toned like itself.
Joseph's family convinced him to go and pursue his own passions instead of settling for the farm life. Though they felt that they robbed Joseph of the adventures many young Pokemon trainers' have, he did not see it that way. Seeing the need to have a bit of order at this stage in his life rather than be an aimless marauder, Joseph enlisted as a cadet into the league's ranger corps.
Due to his older appearance, many refer to him as the uncle of the corps.
