Well, when she joined Rocket, she didn't expect she'd be put to work so quickly. Honestly? It was kind of annoying. Did they not expect her to have some sort of life outside of work, on her days off?

Ugh, whatever. At least they were paying her.

Jessica held her phone in her hands outside Lilycove's department store, her lips pursed as she watched a few jewelry heist scenes from different movies to get a feel for what she should do.

What? She had never robbed a jewelry store before.

"I got this. Simple enough, right? They wouldn't have sent me if I couldn't do it," she convinced herself, looking around for a rock or something heavy to throw through the window.

Actually robbing a jewellery store is nothing like what it looks like in heist movies, and this is something Mars learned one too many years ago.

It’s not something he would expect @jessica to know, of course, because back when Mars was learning all of these things, she was no more than yet another regular rich kid. But, if she doesn’t know how to do things like these, why is she even in Team Rocket to begin with?

This is the question he wonders about as he steps closer in perfect silence, leaning in from behind her in order to calmly ask a simple question:

Mars may be a busy man, especially with his new duties as an admin, but best believe he had made time for this the moment he had seen her name appear in one of his files.

A brick would do, right?

Jessica made a grunting noise as she lifted it, sizing it up to the window she needed to break through. She contemplated it for a moment, tapping her foot.

And, as she raised the brick above her head to throw it, a voice came from behind her.

"Mars! Fancy seeing you here!" Jessie turned around, the brick still held over her head precariously. She smiled at her childhood friend, former crush, the whole nine. Still hot and a wonder to look at.

That was besides the point right now.

"What do you mean 'what the hell am I doing'? I'm trying to break into this store to get the goods. Duh." She gave him a look like it wasn't obvious.

"And this brick is getting kinda hard to hold, so you know... I'm in a rush."

Not that Mars doesn’t appreciate the honesty, but he really hopes she wouldn’t say the same thing if someone else were to ask her questions like that. Why in the world did Jessie think it would be a good idea for her to turn to a life of crime? Is she just trying to act rebellious or something?

”You’ll trigger the alarms if you do that, and then the cops will be here in a few minutes.” An eyebrow is raised as he looks at her, his stare making it clear that this should have been obvious as well.

Still, there is the slightest of smirks.

”Here, let me help you with that.” Without waiting for an answer, he takes the brick from her.

Jessie gave him a confused look. "That's not what the movies show you, though," she said, raising her eyebrows in surprise. Was he trying to mess with her, or was he absolutely serious.

But then, Mars took away the brick from her.

"Well, what am I supposed to do now, huh, Mars?" she said with a pout, placing her hands on her hips.

There went her plan to use blunt force to get in.

Ever one fond of being overdramatic, he sounds truly and properly offended, as if her words have wounded his poor little heart when in fact there’s so very little that Jessie could say to hurt him.

And yet, it’s all too quickly that this is dismissed, allowing himself a sigh before looking at her once again.

”I’ll show you, but in return you have to tell me why the hell you’re doing this.”

As if he doesn’t know she’s in Team Rocket. As if he isn’t her goddamn boss now.

Mars knows this is not how most people would react in this situation, but he also knows all too well that Team Rocket wouldn’t like it if Jessie didn’t fulfill her mission, especially when he’s the one who’s here to guide her through it.

Reaching into his pocket, he brings out his Rotom Phone, tapping to summon the ever-excitable Plasma Pokémon out of it.

Jessie gave him a pout. "C'mon, Mars, you know I didn't mean it like that," she whined, giving a small sigh at him. "You know I trust you more than anything."

Well, almost anything.

But then, he offered to help her. "What? Really?" Jessica perked up, almost like she was a cute little animal with huge puppy dog eyes. "Oh, I knew you were the best."

As for why she was doing this...

She could trust Mars with anything, right?

"It's my mission for today. I was told to break in and steal some goodies. So, that's what I'm trying to do. All for team Rocket, right?" Maybe Jessie should keep her voice down a bit before someone tried to call the police on them.

She leaned over his arm as he pulled out his phone, seeing the Rotom appear. "You're a smarty pants. I knew I could count on you." She grinned, looking up at him with two thumbs up.

Just like that, a few words and she sings. Way too easy, no matter how much she may say she trusts him.

A gaze of bright amber falls upon her, and even if she may act adorable, even if he may still smirk just so slightly, and even if she says he’s the best (about which she’s not wrong, mind you), he still reaches for her and gently flicks her forehead – no more than a meaningful gesture.

”Jessie. You can’t just say things like those, especially not to just anyone.” There’s no shock in his voice, he doesn’t sound horrified or concerned at the mention of being part of Team Rocket. A purposeful choice, of course, but would she notice, or would it go right over her head?

His attention turns to the Rotom which had been busying itself with zapping from one spot to the next all around Jessie. ”Disable the store’s security systems.”

It’s enough for the Rotom to know what to do, this routine clearly being a well rehearsed one. It disappears in the blink of an eye, heading into the jewellery store right through something as simple as a light bulb.

The flick on the forehead was met with a small protest by Jessie, who gave Mars a look. However, she felt like she was being scolded by her older brother.

In a way, she was.

"Sorry, I... just thought I could trust you with that..." she said, glancing off to the side.

Was she pouting?

Her attention is drawn away from the fact that Mars had chided her, looking at his flitting Rotom as it was given its command. And then it was gone.

Jessie looked back at Mars.

"So, am I gonna be in trouble, then?"

Despite the way he had scolded her, a hand rests atop of her head for a short moment, almost as if petting her. Comforting her, maybe? It’s not exactly the warmest gesture, it’s not exactly the kindest, and it’s not how Mars would act under different circumstances, but even here, when thinking of the mission first, that soft spot for the girl he had always thought of almost as if his own little sister shows itself.

She shouldn’t be here.

She shouldn’t be doing this.

”You get in trouble with Team Rocket if you don’t get the mission done, that’s for sure, and you’ll get in trouble with the League if you get caught.” Looking at her, he sighs once more and then turns towards the jewellery store’s door. An Inkay is called out of its pokéball, NIGHT SLASH swiftly dealing with the lock once the security system has been deactivated.

As he pushes the door open, Mars turns to her.

”That’s how all this works, Jessie, you’ll have to get used to it if you really want to be part of Team Rocket.”

Jessie closed her eyes, her lip poking out a little bit more when he patted her head. What was she, a cat? She looked back up at him, looking like she could cry.

"I can?"

Of course she could trust him. He was big brother Mars.

Sighing, Jessie shrugged.

"I don't know how to do this stuff. I just... I just don't like the league. So, Rocket is the only place for me."

She watched the Inkay finish opening the store. Entering after it's open, she looked back at him, waiting for him to follow.

"Are you gonna train me?"

Hoenn is a region divided by a war that dares not call itself that, so truly, there’s no surprise that Jessie would think something like this. It’s either Rocket or the League, everyone must make their choice eventually. She made her, and even though she clearly isn’t ready for the kind of thing Rocket expects and will keep on expecting from her, Mars cannot blame her for it.

”I could train you if you want me to, but if I do, I won’t go easy on you… For your own sake.” As he talks, he searches for the more high-value items in the store, the sneaky squid using its suction cups to pull the glass off a display counter and then bring some gold jewellery over to Jessie.

Pausing, Mars turns to look at her.
[break][break]
”Being part of Rocket is dangerous, Jessie. I won’t lie to you: they’ll keep telling you to do things like these and sometimes even worse, and they'll even expect you to be ready to kill if you have to.” While his words are calm, there is no sugar-coating, his gaze fixed on hers. This is no time for jokes, obviously. ”That's how things are, even if it has its benefits too. You need to be aware of both sides.”

There’s a part of him that hates having to tell her things like these, but she deserves the truth, and not to end up in over her head without even realizing it.

"You would?"

She seemed surprised by his offer. Jessica was more expecting that he would tell her to leave, that this wasn't the life she was meant for. That maybe she was meant for so much more.

But Mars never disregarded her feelings. He never purposefully did, anyway.

"I know what I signed up for. My father always told me about the misdeeds of Rocket, and now that he's in a higher position, well... I know the disdain and the crimes we commit."

Jessie opened up a bag she brought along as his Inkay came to her with jewelry, allowing it to fill it. She smiled gently at it, refraining from giving it a pat on the head.

"I signed up for this life, Mars. I won't drop it now."
