"Ooooh. He's a big one, Sarge." Having long given up on shoes, Skyler wiggles her toes in the sand and basks in the lapping of waves over her feet. She hadn't know what to think when Matias had reached out to her (she thought he might still be a bit bummed out about the whole arm-wrestling thing), but looking over at the gently bobbing Wailmer now, everything becomes crystal clear.

"Does he follow instructions?"

A horde of Wailord slowly converges on the single Wailmer, communicating in a series of haunting and utterly incomprehensible whale noises.

that's right — he's earned a promotion since they last saw each other, and though he's still slightly bummed out about losing in the arm-wrestling thing, he knows there's no better wailord/mer trainer out there than the captain herself.

"Yeah, that's me." Clearly misunderstanding Matias' correction as her own title, Skyler cocks an eyebrow at the older man in silent inquiry. "You don't have to wear it out, Sarge." He doesn't hold her attention for long, however, not when yet another Wailmer joins their troupe - easily bobbing alongside dozens of Wailord.

"Huh, I don't think that one's mine." It takes little effort to command them: a sharp whistle, and Nautilus herds the group closer. With a flash, the wild Wailmer disappears into a pokeball.

"Knew it."

he rolls his eyes, basically missing how easily the captain's able to capture the wild wailmer that appears. by the time he looks back, it's already gone.

"where did it go?"

his attention's pulled away by STOMPING behind them. an exeggutor announces its presence with a feisty EGG BOMB that explodes too close to them. he takes a step back, calling out a pokemon that can actually battle.

"get that egg head."

zarude's POWER WHIP trips the grass-type, setting up its capture.

A hand moves to slap Matias' shoulder with blunt force, Skyler's wide grin quickly filling the newly-promoted captain's view. "Guess there's two of us now, huh, Sarge?" The nickname slips out, and Skyler makes no motion to correct herself - though the curl of her lips is definitely genuine, if not tinged with insolence. "Congrats."

While Matias' attention drifts to an approaching pokemon, so does Skyler's. The Deino that peeks out from the nearby rock formation is small, young and looks disoriented. A Krabby is dangling from its mouth, looking mightily pissed.

A WATER SPOUT might be somewhat overkill, but it gets the job done. With a flick of her wrist, Skyler attempts to capture the small dragon.

"Elite Four too, I hear." An eyebrow creeps up, silver catching the sunlight as she focuses on the older man. "Keeping busy, haven't you?"

maybe he'll always be sarge, but oddly enough, he doesn't seem to mind it. calling both of them 'cap' would be confusing, he imagines.

with his wailmer unable to listen to orders, matias is forced to call out his zarude, pointing over at the approaching prinplup after. it's enough to have the grass-type spring into action, sending out a strong POWER WHIP that wraps around the water-type. it's slammed into the sand, half-buried which makes it really easy to chuck a pokeball at it.

"real busy, yeah. what about you, cap? what have you been up to?"

Getting married. Hunting an ocean god. Making a deal with Rocket. Becoming an avatar. Dodging the Aqua Iniciative. Trying to find something about those Avatar assassins...

Skyler shrugs. "Not getting promoted, apparently." Despite the words, the lopsided grin that stretches across her lips is good-natured and genuine. "I'm happy for you, Sarge. Honestly. Someone has to do the hard work around here. And if you need something," and by extension the League too, "I'm glad to be of help."

For a price, of course.

Away from the shallows, the group of Skyler's Wailord has surrounded Matias' Wailmer, promptly hiding it from view. Skyler doesn't seem too worried about it, up until one Wailord reemerges nearby, glittering pink/purple in the sun. Its massive maw opens and a Gothorita slumps onto a leaf pile, unconscious.

"Again, Sloop? I told you, you can't digest such big meals..." There's a moment of hesitation, then the psychic-type disappears into the pokeball.

"It's easier when you have many of them," she admits, looking over at the group of whales gathering close to shore, but not too close. "My first one was Nautilus - he's the one with the scars." Skyler points him out, but the glare of the sun over the ocean's surface makes it hard to see.

"He was with me on the Lilycove Warfront. Those tales of flying Wailord?" Silver peeks up at him, glinting with troublesome playfulness. "All true. Well, mostly."

The surf brings with it a tiny Tirtouga, its small plastic-wrapped body struggling to come ashore. Skyler frowns and bends down to pick it up, removing the plastic casing from around it - the remains of a pumpkin spice latte in a plastic cup, apparently.

"At any rate, once you've got a couple of very well-trained Wailord, they'll practically train themselves. Under my supervision, of course. I also spend some time with them individually." Enough to be able to tell them apart, which is quite a feat.

But she is the WailQUEEN for a reason.
