Okay, to be fair—

He didn’t mind climbing trees. In fact it was like a call back to what he did way back then, when he first set out in the wild.

Only, in this instance it involved gathering food for something down at Littleroot, and the organizers insisted that everything had to be handpicked.

So how in the hell did one of the Head Rangers find themselves stuck up a tree?

Well, simple:

It was a fucking Berry tree. A really big one, on the level of ancient trees that grew wide and spread their roots thick.

And the organizers wanted to make some fancy-ass wine.

But why this particular Berry, though?

He had no idea. He was just there helping out.

Hopefully there was a pile of leaves big enough to break his dumbass fall when he slipped.

so, with lars safe, it allows matias to simply laugh at him as he approaches.

He didn’t even have any time to say a quick prayer or two because that stupid, fucking branch just had to snap the moment he put his weight on it and then—

Next thing you know, the ‘Composed’ is flat on his ass in said pile of drying leaves.

“Please,” was all he said next as he shook the leaves out of his clothes.

“They wanted berries from this tree to make some fancy-ass wine. How many exactly, they didn’t say. But they just said ‘bring back as many ripe ones as you can’.”

he holds up a brown satchel that's about half-full with berries. most of them look ripe, though there are some bad ones that managed to sneak through. there's even an APRICORN in there!

matias would've offered a hand to help lars up but the head ranger's quick to get back on his feet. so, he simply gestures over his shoulder instead.

“As long as they’re giving us a free taste of the wine they’re making when this shit is done,” he said as he tilted his head over to where he’d left his own ‘gathering sack’—this one was almost filled halfway as well.

…maybe getting there a bit earlier afforded him a better chance to grab some of the Berries that grew in the higher branches of the sprawling tree.

Hell, he didn’t even realize that some of the Berries weren’t berries at all but apricorns either!

“Two hands are better than one, definitely,” he nodded as he tilted his head upward to the canopy.

“I saw a lot of really ripe Berries further up the tree.”

“Maybe you met another organizer, there’s like, several of them running around,” he replied, amused at the other’s reaction when they were offered something else instead.

Once he’d picked up his ‘gathering sack’ and deposited some of the other Berries he’d managed to pluck before taking that unceremonious tumble, they went along.

“Yeah, not too far up. I don’t know why the hell I decided to attack the biggest tree first. ‘m dumb,” he added with a bark of laughter as he tied the ‘sack’ to his belt and then began scaling the new tree.

sometimes, the consequences are just more severe: like falling off a tall tree.

he watches as lars scales the new tree and decides to help, perhaps not wanting the head ranger to fall once again.

so, he calls out his zarude, and points up at a few of the berries that hang overhead, ripe as ever.

"get them for us, please."

Why, plucking their own share of Berries too, of course!

Who knew there was a vast expanse of Berry trees hidden in rural Hoenn?! This was definitely something exploitable in the near future. Maybe there were plans to open a vineyard here eventually? Who the hell knew.

While Lars is busy up in the tree plucking the biggest, ripest berries he can get his hands on, a familiar silver Metagross would then come up to where they were, a Lucario following not far behind with an armload of berries as well.
