He was sincerely hoping that it would be a full moon tonight but alas—

It was the night of the new moon instead.

Which meant they would most likely be stumbling around in the dark!

matias is pretty sure this is the same ranch that he and Greyson Connors once helped out with for the exact same thing. maybe they should hire some full-time security to guard their livestock instead of relying on league resources...

either way, he walks through the woods, glancing around a he keeps watch.

It was as if the stars aligned once again, for them to meet like this working at Petalburg for the evening.

“Not of the dark, really,” he muttered quietly. There was a different kind of darkness he was terrified of. That involved really tight, enclosed spaces but—thank hell the fields were open enough for them to see.

Somewhere along the rest of the ranch perimeter, a Lucario patrolled around. His Metagross was not too far away, either.

almost on cue, HOWLS can be heard in the near distance. he looks up and around them, then off to the side.

"it was lycanroc last time i was here."

The Lucario had already run afoul of the howling noise, and was on the defensive, already launching an explosive Sphere of Auric energy at the nearest attacker.

“They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, so who’s to say?”

At the same time he said this, the Metagross made a warning noise—one that carried across the field.

More Howling noises echoed—some approaching quickly.

the HOWL of a lycanroc is pretty distinct and it's one he's come to remember, so when a pack of lycanroc does appear, he's not surprised in the slightest.

"virizion."

the grass-type nods, summoning a gale of MAGICAL LEAVES that immediately sweeps across, slicing against the pack's fur.

it does enough to distract them for lars to take advantage.

Another sudden explosion of energy from the further battle makes the Lucario draw back for a few moments—only to slap down a powerful Meteor Mash into the charging Lycanroc’s belly, sending it flying.

Over where they were, the Metagross moved closer, releasing a rainbow-colored Psychic burst of energy towards another one of the Lycanroc that had split off from the incoming pack—

But it’s the Pokémon Matias is with that makes his eyebrows go high for a few moments.

‘Oh, my. I don’t know that one,’ came the familiar snarking voice in the back of his head.

“That’s from the end of the Tournament, right?” he inquired, confirming his suspicion.

huh? oh. it's only then that matias realizes lars hasn't met the legendary yet.

"yep. her name's virizion."

the grass-type is fending off the lycanroc with ease, and with the help of lars' metagross and lucario, the pack is dispatched in no time.

"we'll have to relocate them somewhere."

“Hopefully this time, whoever leaves their herd out so close to the forest takes a hint about the Lycanroc,” he mused with a smirk on his face.

Talk about wolves chasing down sheep, are we right?

Thankfully, all the Lycanroc had been handled, and the two Pokémon he’d sent out earlier were making their way back to where Lars was waiting for them to get back.
