Now that Sootopolis is theirs, Gavin takes a personal interest in patrolling the city streets for any sign of League interference or uprising. Apart from being a nice way to spend the late-night walks he'd be doing anyway, it was a good opportunity to get to know his fellow Rockets.

Gavin's Delphox lights his cigarette with a flourish from her obsidian wand, the light-drinking crystal offering no sparkle or reflection.

Gavin's laughter is low, made rough by a smoke-scarred throat.

"There's no appeal. You're better without 'em."

Yet he's an addict, so he pulls on the filter and exhales cigarette smoke and miasma in a swirling breath. Birds disturbed by their presence utter soft calls of protest that Gavin ignores as they scout the city streets.

Will-o-wisps of shadow fire light their path with gloom.

"I'd love to see someone try," he scoffs. "You think they'd stand a chance?"

the wing-beat of retreat from the chatot is a dull echo as the fletchinder collapses, wrapped in toxic webbing. it fades to crimson light.

Though considerate enough not to blow the smoke directly toward valentine besoras, he offers no further accommodation even when he notes the other's dramatic fanning in front of his face. They were outside; he'd be fine.

Beautifly is a rare sight during the evening hours, and one catches Gavin's attention as it seeks shelter under a streetlamp as if hoping for the sun. It lashes out in a rage when they draw too close, but the shadow Delphox at Gavin's heels dispatches it easily with a gout of shadow fire.

The underboss nudges the unconscious insect with his foot, satisfied when it stirs.

"That obvious?" His teeth flash in the artificial light. "I love a good fight. What're you in it for, if not for a fight?"

His curiosity reads genuine enough as he straightens up, a pokeball shaking in his palm.

Gavin's characteristically stoic exterior shifts, the brightness in valentine besoras's eyes reflected in his own as he recognizes a kindred spirit.

"That's why I joined, too," he admits, but further elaboration is stalled by the mention of the Delphox who stalks behind them. The glimmer in Gavin's gaze turns fervent.

"No," he corrects, "she is a shadow Pokemon."

He pauses their patrol, coming to a stop beneath one of the streetlights and beckoning the creature forth. In comparison to his others, her corruption from Necrozma is subtle — at a glance, only her thin wand is made from obsidian crystal. Closer examination reveals small protrusions of the alien material mostly hidden by her thick fur.

"Their corruption makes them powerful," he enthuses, "but ordinarily too aggressive for most trainers to reliably handle. I have a bit of an advantage thanks to my partnership with Shadow Lugia. They're calmer, around me."

He extends his hand, lets miasma curl around his wrist and fingers.

"She isn't my only one," he says of Delphox. "I collect them. Rocket used to make artificial ones, once, but we've run dry of the formula and attempts to recreate it haven't been successful."

He's so involved in his rambling that he pays no mind to the Pokemon that wander close.

valentine besoras produces a notebook and Gavin laughs, a surprisingly soft sound.

"My shadow Pokemon have proven too aggressive to mate with others of their respective species. They'll hold off on ripping each other apart under my influence but they've as yet shown no interest in procreation. If I could perhaps obtain two of the same species... but I've not even heard of shadow Pokemon that share their kind. Unfortunate."

Another gout of purple-black fire swallows one of the Pokémon whole, leaving the other for Valentine's collection if he wished.

The sight of it bears a reminder.

"Ah, yes, your earlier question — I call it shadow fire. It appears similar to regular flame, though I've only recorded this one as being able to produce it. It's also not a fire-type move, interestingly enough!"

There's a pause as he processes the earlier questions.

"No idea if it can be passed on through genetics due to the earlier conundrum, but it doesn't appear to be infectious. A shame, really. I would love a reliable way to produce them again."
