Even in Hoenn temperatures drop with the approach of winter, and apparently that means that Ice-types are now to be found in the Safari Zone.

Usually, Mars would care little for most of such pokémon, but after the events that took place beneath the church ruins in Ever Grande City, there’s a single one of his that is in dire need of a replacement.

A replacement that hopefully will be much smarter than what his former Froslass had been when deciding to kiss a horrific monster.
[break][break]
Then again, Mars isn’t much for hoping, nor for putting his faith in most pokémon.

How about instead we call this... his own weird version of Christmas shopping.

After some consideration, the pokémon summoned to his side is a Rapidash whose pale flames burn bright and warm in the cold environment of the Safari Zone. Tame and loyal despite its brash nature, it stands in wait for Mars to jump on its back as he would usually do, but what it gets instead is the familiar feeling of a few pats on its neck.

”Let’s just go for a walk today, I may need you to deal with some wild pokémon.”
[break][break]
The Rapidash neighs in protest, because walking isn’t nearly as fun as a run or a gallop, but it goes along with it nevertheless, and it soon gets it wishes when they encounter a Treecko. It looks at Mars expectantly, and the banker shrugs in response.

”Sure, have at it.”
[break][break]
And so, that’s how Treecko ends up falling victim to an overwhelming FLAME CHARGE.

No, truth be told, it’s not a pokémon Mars cares much for, but isn’t Sceptile’s tail basically a pine? It fits the theme of the thread, so a Safari Ball is thrown.

Stantler are one of those Normal type pokémon that are pretty fucked up for being Normal type, and that should definitely be Psychic type instead.

That much becomes clear when Mars suddenly finds himself standing on perfect white sand after encountering a small herd of them – as if the Safari Zone were a beach just like it was back during summer.

”Right, these can create illusions… Let’s enjoy it for a bit.”

After all, Mars will always be one to prefer places like these, even going as far as to offer his Rapidash a casteliacone as a refreshing treat. It’s this that draws the attention of one of the Stantler, its bright green fur making it stand out among the herd.

It approaches, and much to the Rapidash’s dismay, Mars decides to share the casteliacone with it as well.

Pokémon that can create illusions are cool, alright? Even if they’re not Psychic type (not yet, at least, give me Wyrdeer please).

Once the herd of Stantler is gone, so are their illusions, and the Safari Zone returns to its cold wintery state. Still, the one that had shared the casteliacone with Mars’ Rapidash remains, and after using one of his Safari Balls to catch it, the banker continues with his search.

How hard can it be to find a Snorunt or a Froslass?

What they encounter instead is a Snover, and while it may be close in name, it sure isn’t what Mars is looking for.

The horse gladly complies, its FIRE BLAST taking care of the Snover in no time.

The last time Mars had seen a Snorunt, it was when Lachesis somehow devolved when making contact with the beast in the church ruins. Back then, he had thought it to be a useless little thing, and had gladly tossed its conical body out of their boat the moment he needed it to freeze the water so they wouldn’t fall into the strange portals that appeared before them.

In that sense, he had been completely responsible for the fact that Lachesis herself had fallen through one of the portals, but of course Mars doesn’t see it that way.

Even if there’s a strange feeling within him when seeing a Snorunt once again.
[break][break]
This one’s different, and yet it’s the same. It brings back memories, and the more he stares at it as it walks away shivering, the more he’s reminded of everything that happened at Ever Grande. It’s frustrating, angering, and perhaps those feelings are why he has his Rapidash deal with the Ice type.

A FLAME CHARGE, a helpless Snorunt, a Safari Ball thrown with expert precision…

When picking it up, Mars stares at it for a second, watching the way dim sunlight is reflected upon its dark metallic surface. Did he really need another Snorunt? Will it really replace his lost Froslass? No, of course not, and he knows as much, yet he still catches it and convinces himself that it will be the same.

It was just a pokémon, right?

Even if it happened to be one he liked, it shouldn’t matter.
[break][break]
The clip clop of the Rapidash’s hooves draws him away from his thoughts, a sigh escaping him before petting the pokémon’s side.

Just as he’s about to leave the Safari Zone, something small and pink catches his eye when it swiftly makes its way up the trunk of a nearby tree. A fluffy white tail marked by a pink stripe… pointed ears… yellow cheeks… A shiny Pachirisu, there’s no doubt about it.

A faint smile tugs at Mars’ lips, bringing out his Rotom Phone to take a few pictures of pokémon before sending them to luka chêne, since he has a feeling she would probably think it’s adorable.

She does love pink pokémon, and who could blame her for that?

Aesthetics are everything to Mars.

And then, there’s a thought: the reminder that he does have one more empty Safari Ball.

When he puts his phone away, Mars also gets some treats from his backpack, using them to lure the Pachirisu closer to them while also giving some to his ever-demanding Rapidash.
