Stationed along the outskirts of Olde town, the tall man leaned against the white fencing of the dirt road. As he was here to impress the arriving rocket higher up, Felix had dressed himself well; dark gray pants, a tight black turtle neck, and an oversized black coat. The hanging cigarette only further completed the ensemble.

Drawing the lit cigarette, a puff of smoke slithered out his lightly parted lips. It's been a while since he felt the rush of something new. Something inherently different than the typical day-to-day task he'd be assigned at work.

Normally he'd be the head of defense-- carefully ensuring the safety of those that stole the rare Pokemon. But that was to change today. For the first time in his career, he'd be tasked with obtaining the cargo himself. Different, but achievable.

Men like Martín del Mar don’t belong in places like Oldale Town, and yet it’s upon the cold and hard ground of a well-worn road that dark chelsea boots step, soon to be marked by dirt. He’d prefer not to be here, but being a Team Rocket Admin comes with duties he’d rather not try to avoid, and one of them happens to sometimes be meeting new recruits. Oldale; rural, small, and forgettable as it is, provides for a good testing ground at times like these.

Chill as this late Autumn night is, hands rest within the pockets of an elegant wool coat as Mars approaches the picket fence with a Gardevoir by his side, but for what little expectations he had had for this meeting, he certainly hadn’t thought he’d recognize the person he was about to meet…

”Felix Gallagher.” While there’s surprise at first, this never shows in his expression, and soon enough there’s a slight and playful smirk. ”Small world. What the hell are you doing in Hoenn?”

Someone he knows from Sinnoh. Someone he basically grew up with and once called a friend. Someone who worked for the syndicate. Someone who knows about the life he hides so well from most people in Hoenn.

The approaching footsteps earned a sideway glance from the man. "Martín del Mar ..." Unlike his counterpart, surprise was clear in raised eyebrows and widen eyes. He hadn't expected to see the brunette again, much less here in Hoenn. Felix couldn't even remember how long it's been since their last night spent together.

The lit cigarettes slipped from between his icy fingers, falling to the ground beside his shoe. "August and I needed a fresh start." It was a mystery whether Mars remembered the name of the the newly born baby that came into the world nearly days before their High School graduation, or the few nights Felix would ask the other members of the team if they wanted to stay an extra hour just so he could avoid returning home for a little longer. He didn't expect him to know, or remember anything of what he barely spoke of in the first place. "You?"

The name rings distant bells, yet it still takes Mars a short moment to figure out exactly who Felix is referring to. A close friend he also knew back at Canalave? Something more? Unlikely, but there is the vague memory of Felix mentioning having a baby brother. That’s probably it, then.

Of course, he could just ask about it instead of playing all these guessing games in his mind, but as Mars is well aware, asking means getting questions in return, and his life back at Sinnoh is one he’d often prefer to avoid talking about. How much does Felix know? Did he hear the news about his wedding? Those of Cosima’s tragic death only months later?

”I guess I could say the same.” A fresh start. An escape. Escape from his grief, from his family, from the life they forced him to live, and yet still under their grasp – still a criminal. They may try to escape, but this is the life they will always belong to in the end.

”So, Rocket, hm? It’s pretty different from the syndicate.” Is it a warning or encouragement? Both, but mainly the latter, for Mars will always see Rocket as the lesser evil compared to the terrible things the Sinnoh Syndicate has done to him. ”You probably have a few questions, yeah?”

If someone were to pass by, they'd assume they were simply coworkers, conversing about the mild duties of the workday. Acquaintances without a lick of care for one another beyond the occasional lunch out. Their wildest imaginations wouldn't even inch close towards the reality of the situation; that they were old childhood friends. Childhood friends who hadn't seen or heard of each other in years. The type of old friend you should be hugging with tears streaks stained across your cheeks.

But that wasn't Felix.

"Yeah." He responded without much of a reaction. Warning, threat-- neither inflicted much harm and any hints of encouragement flew simply over his head. When you've lived your whole life in the trenches, even compliments begin to sound malicious.

The tip of his toe pressed hard against the cigarette bud from before, twisting it till the ash vomited out either end, it's insides splattered across the cold dirt. The ash almost looked like a spiderweb.

"..." Typically, he'd respond with a swift no. Beyond knowing the objective he'd been tasked with, there wasn't much else to know, or expect to be told. Everything necessary from him would've been provided by Belial Stone anyways, and needless information would only muddle his situation further. And he already had Barnaby to worry about...

Still, there was one question that rested on his mind: "...You doing okay?" Heavy black eyes stared back at the admin; a twinkle of sincerity apparent.

Eyes as if made of bright amber calmly watched Felix Gallagher, paying close attention to everything about the man before them: his appearance, his demeanor, every action, every gesture, and even the smallest non-verbal signs when speaking. It’s a habit of Mars’, really. To be observant. To always pay attention to the details.

It’s why he reminds himself of what he knows about the freshly-recruited grunt. This is not the quiet friend he made as a teenager, but a man who once worked for the Sinnoh Syndicate, and who mostly recently was an arm-for-hire for Belial Stone’s ANVIL. And yet, deep down, isn’t he still the person Mars once knew?

It’s a question too familiar, too sincere, the kind that would be asked by an old friend.

In truth, Mars is far from okay, but it’s not as if he’s about to rant to Felix about all the fucked up shit going on in his life. All he does instead is shrug.

An answer he could understand.

If asked, he would've answered the same. Avoid all questions-- better to focus on the mission than the gritty past. With a hard sniff, Felix inwardly condemned himself for diverting the conversation from their objective, effectively wasting both of their time. This wasn't Highschool anymore.

"You're right." He agreed, his voice returned to normalcy: cold and flat. Professional. Then, with his fingers working at his knuckles, roughly cracking each joint, Felix turned to walk towards the outskirts of town. Right where their target-- a malicious sprouting rival group to Rocket's activities-- had set up shop.

"My Gallade's already outside the building keeping watch. There weren't any guards last I checked."

In Sinnoh, the syndicate has always demanded professionalism: do your job, be of use or you’re worth nothing to us.

The same can often be said about Team Rocket, and yet it’s almost funny to think about how many people within the organization matter to him beyond their skills as criminals – how many he has grown to consider his friends overtime. Like how Killian Decker and him have become closer than what they were before he joined Team Rocket, how Jessica Manner is like a little sister to him even now, how there’s people like Cora Valentine whose company he always appreciates, Tempest Quinn who he goes jogging with, and Remiel Calcifet who he can talk about the classics with, tease, and even throw the occasional snowball at (sorry, not sorry). There’s even Eris Halla, a kid who Mars will always think shouldn’t belong in Team Rocket, but still one that has grown to matter to him almost as if she were family…

Maybe Cillian Quinn is right and, in it’s own way, Team Rocket is a family.

Maybe being part of the same criminal organization doesn’t mean his past friendship with Felix Gallagher has to be set aside or forgotten.

Yet, right here, right now, on this night at Oldale Town, the mission has to come first.

”A Gallade, huh?” As if to match the Gardevoir by Mars’ side. ”Sounds good. What do you plan to do next?”

After all, he’s here to observe and take care of things if they go wrong, for the task itself should be easy enough for Felix to take care of on his own.

”Sounds good. What do you plan to do next?”

Repetitive. Monotonous. Drilled into his skull without any room for negligence. Belial Stone had asked similar questions a multitude of times, demanding an answer for a plethora of different situations. The sound of Mars' voice echoing that same repetitive tune only fueled the flip further.

Like ice, Felix's eyes melted into the same hollow windows he'd worn so many times before. "First, I meet up with Gallade" The robot replied, its fingers tracing the outlines of a metal handle tightly secured within its coat. It didn't speak out much after that -- rather, it kept quiet, it's focused pinned on securely reaching the target destination.

Felix silently directed his superior around the outskirts of the town, utilizing a more uncharted path he'd mapped out earlier in the day, which involved a much more rugged pathing to the building. Their arrival shortly followed the setting of the sun. Gallade, who had been stationed within the forested area that wrapped around the shed-like building, met up with them the moment they reached their previously agreed-upon point of contact.

"Did you see them leave?" It asked flatly.

The Pokémon shook his head.

It then turned to his superior, offered a curt nod, then turned back to its Gallade. "We make sure we aren't too outnumbered. Pincer them-- you flank left, we flank right. Go two seconds after my signal."

Before engaging any further, Felix looked towards Martín del Mar for confirmation to continue.

Cold and calculating, or perhaps simply cold and going through the motions...

Through what is known, through what has been learned, through what was taught to him by those who introduced him to this dangerous lifestyle of theirs.

Mars can recognize it all when he watches Felix work, because it’s the same thing he has seen one too many times before. So very similar to the mentality and attitude the syndicate forced upon so many people he knew, and even to how he himself acted about all such things at some point – how he still can act depending on the mission. They taught him to be meticulous, to pay attention to the details, and above all else, to always be effective in his approach.

They’re the things he searches for and takes note of as they walk: like the fact that not every recruit would consider taking an uncharted path around the outskirts of Oldale, or sending their pokémon to scout ahead. It’s a good sign, yet one he doesn’t comment on, keeping quiet in a way that would perhaps seem uncharacteristic of someone who has always been known to have something to say no matter the situation.

He simply watches the houses, his gaze passingly falling upon all those carefully adored trees that stood by windows – lit up and covered in colourful garlands and ornaments. Such a pretty sight. Such a peaceful place. Too bad this is where their enemies had decided to stay.

”Pincer… Sounds good. Their numbers should be manageable.” Despite giving the go ahead and expressing approval, pokéballs are ready within his pockets, just in case backup ends up being needed. The Gardevoir stands ready as well, watching Felix and the Gallade.

Nearby, a single man stands outside the building as if keeping guard.

Marguerite's confirmation was all Felix needed.

Giving one last nod, it and the Gallade snaked their way towards the shed, separating as they approached it. The building itself was relatively small, housing maybe one room separate from the main foyer. Wide windows occupied both sides of the building as well, spilling out buckets full of golden light.

With Felix moving to the left and Gallade to the right, the two covertly hid beneath the glimmering windows, avoiding all hints of light from touching their bodies and revealing their presence.

Felix pressed its back to the wall and peered into the wildly decorated insides of the building: festive stockings filled the walls, hung up by strains of multi-colored lights that circled around to the lively Christmas tree tucked in the corner. Five men were settled around the tree, happily talking about the mundanities of their life, smiling and chuckling at one another's stories.

Holding in its breath, the grunt inched towards the front of the building. Once to the edge, it reached into its jacket and fished out a small mirror. With the right angle, it was able to take note of the guard's position out front.

Okay.

One outside, five inside - a doable situation.

Like the crack of lightning, Felix zipped forward, sneaking beneath the front windows enough to reach the unsuspecting guard. Mouth covered, neck snapped, his life was snipped short within seconds.

Now came the fun part.

Felix reached into its jacket again - this time to the far left - and tugged out a green device. Holes littered its sides and a single ring topped it off. It brought the device to its lips, bit the ring, and tugged it away, effectively triggering the device. Then, with one single swoop, it chucked the stun grenade through one of the front windows.

BAM

A wave of bright led flooded the apartment, following the sharp sound that erupted that first erupted from it. Working for ANVIL sure had its benefits.

With the signal given, both Gallade and Felix forced their way into the building - one from the entrance and the other through the left side window.
