An enchanting scene overtook the rooftop of Piazza Oro Grande Bank’s headquarters on the night of December thirty-first, exquisite decorations having turned the place into a bright wonderland of its own while weather moves used by pokémon ensured the guests remained nice and warm. Fairy lights, bubbling champagne, the shimmering amulets of Meowths that hangout near comfortable furniture – so much light, so much gold, and all of it existing in such a harmonious way.

There was once a time when throwing parties had been one of Mars’ favourite hobbies, but while he may have still excelled at it, the radiant smile he wore on this early winter night was one behind which too much darkness roamed. Not even those with the keenest eyes would have been able to tell, for he had always been good at hiding things like those…

”Rose, Cyrus, I hope you’re enjoying the party.”

Ever the gracious host, he would greet all of the bank’s distinguished guests by name, chatting with them for a short moment before moving on to the next group – rarely giving any more attention than what he would others. Amiable, charming, just the way Martín del Mar was supposed to be, and yet it was soon enough that he found himself needing to step away from the crowd, perhaps because of his recent condition.

With a glass of champagne in hand, he approached the elegant railing, a pink-tailed Meowth soon joining him and rubbing her side against his leg as if to comfort him.

She'd kept her distance. A figure in the shadows, watching, as Mars played the role of charming host. Using the brilliant that smile he'd probably practiced in the mirror to fool his guests. But he didn't fool her, not anymore. Valentina saw the cracks in his facade and the darkness that bled out from them. [break][break]

Mars couldn't hide the truth from her. [break][break]

Taking a sip of champagne, she gently stroked the head of her Luxray. The feline purred, nudging her hand. They were both tense. Tempest out of worry for her and Vale from anxious nerves. She waited so long to confront him after learning the truth. And soon, her sister would have justice. [break][break]

"He's moving. Let's go, Tempest."[break][break]

Vale slid casually beside him on the railing without a word. After several seconds of silence, she spoke up. [break][break]

"You still know how to throw a party, Martín."

Formal parties like these always had their way of reminding him of her – of how they used to enjoy these sorts of things together. He had loved throwing parties, and she had loved to help him plan every detail; she had looked forward to such nights and had smiled oh so brightly when greeting guests. His own smiles may have often been a façade, but hers? Hers were always honest, and so were his when he was with her.

She would have adored something like this, and yet, the irony of it all was that Mars wouldn’t even be in Hoenn if he hadn’t lost her.

The thought was like a stab, a pang, and instinctively, he reached for the ring finger where a ring no longer laid, a realisation which only brought with it more pain.

And then her voice came to haunt him from beyond the grave.

Or, at least one all too similar to hers.

”...Vale?” If only for a moment, when he turned to face her, the façade faded away, and genuine surprise showed itself in the expression of a man who often hid his feelings so well. Surprise and sadness.

He's surprised and Vale doesn't blame him. She would be too if a ghost from a past she'd buried came back to haunt her. But she isn't Casper the Friendly Ghost come to play games and reminisce on old times. Angry, full of vinegar and vengeance - she's a Revenant here to right a wrong. [break][break]

She reminds herself of that when the glint of sadness in Mars's eyes catches her attention. It's nothing but a lie from a veteran actor. A trick from a master magician. [break][break]

"Quite the empire you built." she sipped her champagne and stared out beyond the railing, at the night sky. Her sapphires drew lines between the glistening stars in silence. All the while contemplating what to say to the man who'd robbed her of so much. [break][break]

She'd prepared a speech believe it or not. A long winded monologue brimming with hateful and vile words. The kinds only a salior or satan himself would let slip from their tongue. Now, in front of him, it felt pointless.[break][break]

"The stars are beautiful tonight."

Eyes as blue as deep ocean water. Eyes so much like the ones that used to captivate him and steal his breath away; the ones he would have gladly drowned in and that he could never forget. Genetics are, truly, as if a blessing and curse, for while her demeanour may be nothing to what her sister’s once was, there has always been too much about @valentina that reminds him of the woman he loved.

In the past, he found it charming and he had loved Valentina as if she were a sister of his own.

Now… Now it’s nothing but haunting, but the fondness that remains is what hurts the most.

He shouldn’t have left her so soon after Cosima’s death. He should have looked after her and made sure she was okay.

But, how could he have done as much when back then he could barely even look after himself?

She tightened at the mention of Canalave. Her fingers clenched the stem of the half-full champagne glass hard enough it might break. How dare he try to reminisce. Act as if nothing happened and like he didn't know why she was here. [break][break]

Vale frowned and leaned forward, elbows coming to rest on the roof's railing. She focused on the sky, hiding the fire behind her eyes that burned bright enough to rival the few stars she could see. Not that it mattered. He'd hear it in her voice. Apathy scorched away to make room for visceral, deep-seated hatred. [break][break]

"I'm here to right a wrong, Martín." She made a horrible assassin, she's aware, but Vale needed him to know. Allow the reason why to set in before she robbed him of his life.

There it is again, his name. The name she wouldn’t call him by if she were glad to see him tonight. Said so coldly, so sharply; like a dagger made of ice. Is that it, then? Does she blame him? Does she hate him? Is she here to stab him right through the heart?

The thought is entertained if only for a second, because once again, when he turns to look at @valentina, he sees her. Cosima. Her sister. Except Valentina doesn’t smile in the ways Cosima always did. There’s no joy, no happiness – only apathy.

Why? Doesn’t she deserve to be happy too?

It’s what Cosima would want for her, and as Mars knows painfully well, it’s what she’d want for him too.

Hate. It's too small and not a strong enough word to describe the feeling in Vale's chest. Like trying to compare a lit match to an inferno. Similar in nature but different in intensity. [break][break]

Smooth skin wrinkled as her frown turned to a scowl. Should have known she wouldn't be able to keep it together for long. Vale turned, pointed enough of her face in Martín's direction so he might glimpse her disdain. [break][break]

"No, Martín - I don't hate you. I abhor and detest you." she spat coldly. [break][break]

The fact he's so calm only pisses her off more. That stoicism is an admission of guilt in her eyes. Confirmation that everything she's come to believe is true. [break][break]

She pivoted, stepped closer to him and away from the railing. Her free hand reached out, a finger seeking to trace a line along his jaw. So handsome. Cosima truly loved him. Once upon a time, she'd been jealous they'd found each other. Envious her sister had gotten something she'd wanted yet again. [break][break]

Not any longer. [break][break]

"You took my sister from me. She loved you, and you got her killed. It's only fair the scales be balanced."

Somewhat dramatic, but how could she be blamed? How long had she allowed these feelings to stew within her, waiting to throw those words right at his face?

It saddens him.

It hurts.

Out of all the people in this world, never had Mars imagined Valentina would be someone whose hatred he’d earn, and yet here she is, blaming him for Cosima’s death. And the worst part of all? She’s right to blame him, because this would have never happened to Cosima if she hadn’t met him.

”You’re right.” He doesn’t recoil from her touch, but he does reach for her hand, just so barely pulling it away from him as amber eyes look down into blue ones. There, in that amber gaze of his, lie those things that dull out its brightness when revealed: the pain, the sadness, the misery, the grief, the guilt.
[break][break]
”She died because of me, Valentina. Our son died because of me.” His words are but a whisper, meant only for her ears, as if he were afraid to speak out loud those same things he has told himself ever since he lost Cosima. ”They died because we wanted a better life, because we thought we could get away from all of this... but my family wouldn’t allow that.”

Does she know that? Does she know that it was his own grandfather, Emilio Marzán, who ordered the hit on his wife? Telling Valentina that he knows all of this could ruin all of his plans, she could be working for the Marzáns for all he knows, and yet, he doesn’t stop himself. Is it because he wants her to know how guilty he feels or is it simply that these feelings consume him?

She had always been one for theatrics. Dramatic wordage shouldn't be too surprising. Detest, abhor. Powerful words to describe emotions so intense she felt them in her soul. Yet somehow, someway, Martín knew how to chip away at her anger. [break][break]

Vale expected him to lie and try to weasel his way to freedom. She steeled herself for any excuse this silver-tongued devil may conjure. Expectation, her defenses - useless in the face of his admission. [break][break]

Anger, surprise, and disbelief danced a chaotic waltz on her face. Her fingers twitched against Martín's chin. "What?" His family killed her sister? Her would-be nephew? [break][break]

"That doesn't make any sense. Why would they risk war with my family to teach you a lesson?" Vale's gaze narrowed, doubtful. [break][break]

"You're lying."
