artemis had realized, a bit too late, that he had forgotten a gift at his own apartment. usually, he would have decided he could give it later, but this was important and he needed to get it now. besides, it wasn't like the travel would be long.

at least, that's what he had thought, anyways, until he had ran into the fucking delibird. it was stubborn, struggling with a sack of presents that seemed too big for a pokemon alone to carry. and yet, any attempts artemis of picking up the sack artemis had tried had not went well; the delibird, for some reason, was determined to carry it on its own.

it'd be fine. artemis would wait for the next person to show up, he'd apologize and say he was busy, and it would be on the next poor soul to watch out for the delibird while he went to get this last gift. it was easy as that.

Locke stretched their arms out above their head as they left Littleroot. First stop done, and with no major incidents! No life-threatening encounters with legendaries, no getting lost in mysterious locations that weren’t there before, and their Pokémon even managed to behave themselves throughout the entire delivery route!

Or almost the entire route. Looked like one of the Delibird had wandered off after all. Which one was it? He couldn’t tell from this distance. “Ah, sorry!” He shouted to the other person on the road as he picked up his pace to a light jog. ”They’re not causing you any trouble are-Huh? You’re not one of mine…”

The instinctive apology faded into confusion as Locke approached the unfamiliar penguin. “Is this your Delibird?” They asked the stranger.

it seemed that artemis' hopes for someone to come along had done something, because he didn't have to wait long at all. the stranger approaches, apologizing for the delibird, and artemis gives the delibird a final glance before he lifts his hands to sign that it was okay, the delibird hadn't been bothering him-

but it wasn't theirs. hands lowering a little as the stranger got closer, he shook his head in response to the question.

'no. ran into it when i was trying to get a present i forgot.' and, already, he's trying to figure out a way to ditch it on the stranger. 'looks like it's trying to deliver something. i tried to help it, but.' and, to demonstrate, he reached for the bag again; only to be batted away once more. with a shrug, he gives the stranger a please help look.

he doesn't know how to deal with delibird.

Locke watched the other man move his hands purposefully, their expression jumping from confusion, to recognition, to apologetic. ”Ah, I’m sorry. I don’t-I’ve never learned sign language…” They admitted sheepishly. ”I think…I sort of understand though?”

He bent down to meet the Delibird, noting the spotty white patches along its beak that indicated its age. Its tail was also very large, so it was likely used to taking charge and bossing others, not the other way around.

Locke turned back to the stranger. ”I think the best we can do is follow it and make sure it gets where it needs to go safely.”

the stranger seems confused at artemis' signing at first, but as their expression shifts to apologetic, he catches on fairly easily. fuck. if he had known he would run into someone who hadn't learnt sign language, he would have brought someone with him who did.

well, it was too late for that, anyways. and the stranger seemed to understand, well enough, bending down to inspect the delibird, looking for something artemis didn't know to look for. eventually, the stranger turned back to him, to suggest that they just follow it where it needs to go.

artemis, despite himself, deflates a little; he's still in a hurry, after all, and he doesn't know how far the delibird will lead them. but he nods- if nothing else, he can text reve zajac to tell him he's having to deal with a delibird issue. which...out of context, doesn't sound very likely, but he could find proof for his friend. somehow.

The Delibird seemed satisfied by the arrangement, or at the very least tolerant of it. The stranger seemed less so, though it couldn’t be helped. If the old bird did run into trouble, Locke wasn’t all that confident they could actually do anything on their own, and with no one else around...

Well, may as well get to know each other, as best they could at least.

He stood back up, patting the dirt off his pants before extending a hand out to the other person. ”I’m Locke by the way!” He kept himself facing the other man as he introduced himself, unsure yet if he could actually hear him, or was just exceptionally good at reading lips. It seemed a bit forward, but it was probably better to just ask, right? ”Er, if you don’t mind, are you deaf? Or can you just not speak?”
