Upon their unexpected and somewhat unusual reunion, a promise had been made to teach @jessica certain aspects of what it’s like to be a Team Rocket member. Man of his word as he is, Mars had intended to do so sooner rather than later, but between the bank and his duties as an Admin, he had been all too busy.

It’s why he had decided to bring Jessie with him on a standard smuggling operation. He was supposed to come to supervise things anyways, and little could go wrong in this sort of situation.

”Grunts usually take low level jobs like poaching. Since you already have some experience with stealing, we’ll focus on this today.” He would explain as they stepped into the warehouse to which the shipment would be delivered. ”Many of the pokémon gathered by Team Rocket go to the black market, and it’s important to verify the content of the shipments and make sure they get there safely.”

This was their job for the night, and as such, Mars seemed much different from his usual casual and charming demeanour – much more serious. And yet, he still smirked faintly when turning to look at Jessie.

Jessie was used to working at night. But it was in clubs, where music was blasting at full volume, lights were rampant and strobing, and people were yelling at each other. This in comparison...

It seemed like a rather boring job. She was not feeling it at all.

She held a coffee in her hands, her eyes lidded as she listened to Martín del Mar speak to her about what her role would be in Rocket since she was now an important asset to them. Or as important as a grunt could be. It didn't help that her head dipped a couple of times.

"Poaching. Okay. So, how long are we staying out here checking these things?" Jessie asked, sipping from her cup.

The homesickness of being away from Verdanturf, even though she hadn't lived there for too long, was setting in as well, too. Slateport just brought back so many ill memories. What if her father found her here? Or Uri?

She couldn't face that.

"So can I touch all of these?"

It’s only passingly that the question pops up in Mars’ mind, but while under most circumstances he’d feel somewhat guilty if the answer were to be the latter, he knows all too well that he can’t afford thoughts like those in this sort of situation. If Jessie really wants to be part of Team Rocket, she’ll have to get used to doing this sort of thing. It’s what’s expected of a grunt, after all, and she’s no exception.

”Jessica, you need to pay attention.”
[break][break]
While his tone is calm and neutral, it’s serious enough, the sole fact that he’s calling her by her name instead of the usual nickname marking a clear difference.

So, before answering her question, he reaches for the nearest box, opening the lid in order to reveal a few neatly stacked pokéballs.

”Go ahead.”
[break][break]
It’s at this point that Mars calls out his Starmie, perhaps if only for safety’s sake.

Mars scolded her, though it definitely was gentler than it could have been. He was an admin, and Jessie was nothing more than a grunt. Their relationship did not apply in this situation, and she knew that.

"I am paying attention," she offered weakly.

Her coffee was gone within a few more sips, and her cup was abandoned with the other boxes. She watched him as he lifted the lid to observe what was inside.

With his okay, she approached to look inside, rolling several of the balls around. She wondered what was inside...

"Do you know what's inside?" Jessie asked, looking back at him as he brought out his Starmie.

In her defense, it’s not particularly interesting work, not even Mars thinks so. It’s something necessary, a fundamental part of the whole operation in order for it to run smoothly and with no complications, but it can be really boring and monotonous.

”Technically, yeah.”

It’s then when he reaches for a tablet that had been resting on one of the boxes, showing the screen to Jessie.

”Cargo manifest. The pokémon in the pokéballs should match the list, their condition will determine their black market price.”
[break][break]
Easy enough, right?

He reaches for a pokéball of his own, its content happening to be a Houndoom of bright blue fur that barks, growls, and attempts to attack them the moment it's released – clearly not pleased with the situation it finds itself in.

Just as the Houndoom pounces in what’s probably an attempt to BITE, Mars grabs Jessie's arm, making her take a step back while at the same time a THUNDER WAVE on his Starmie’s part PARALYZES the furious canine.

”Houndoom. Shiny. Healthy. Signs of aggression.” It’s all written on the tablet once the pokémon has been called back. ”A lot of them may not be too happy about having been taken. Be careful.”

Jessie peered over his arm (she was absolutely too short to look over his shoulder) to observe the tablet he picked up. On the screen, there was a list of Pokemon. It further detailed which Pokemon were in what Poke ball. She spotted a couple of safari balls, luxury balls, really any that someone could imagine.

It made her wonder who was going into the wild and catching these creatures. Were they all Rockets? Or were they normal people too, looking for an extra buck?

As Mars reached for a ball, Jessie found herself intrigued with the tablet. Her finger scrolled through the lists, spotting several interesting listings. That was until a growl sounded close to her ear and-

SNAP.

Teeth clacked disturbingly close to her arm, where Jessie had been standing mere moments before. Mars had dragged her away, saving her from the bite that the shiny Houndoom was directing toward her. She had probably been the first person it had seen, and of course it was scared.

She would be too.

Her heart was pounding in her chest as she held the tablet close. The Houndoom was paralyzed before being sent back into its ball.

"Th-thanks. I guess I won't take them out..." Not after that.

Even the most menial and boring task can come with its fair share of dangers,and apparently that’s something Jessie has now come to understand.

After looking over at her for the sake of making sure that she’s okay, Mars sighs, a hand resting on her shoulder.

”You’ll be fine, Jessie. I’m here.”

This time, at least, but they both know he won’t always be here for her, especially not for jobs as simple as these.

”Just keep your distance from them and stay alert.”
[break][break]
It’s with such words that the Houndoom’s pokéball is returned to where it belongs, Mars then reaching for the one lying next to it. Just like that, he carries on with their work.

The hand on her shoulder was comforting, if only for a fleeting moment before Mars withdrew it to get back to whatever task he was up to.

He seemed to sure of himself. Like he knew what he was doing, and everything in the world made sense to him.

Well, of course it did. In the world, he was an admin. He had to know what he was doing.

Jessie felt lost as she looked at the balls, row upon row being examined. Lost. Confused. Beginning to wonder...

Was this a mistake?

"Mars... what am I supposed to do? I feel like you're doing all the work," she asked, her eyes filled with frustration as she looked over at him.

Not at him. But at herself.

There had once been a time when he was lost and confused too, a time when he too had been learning how to do all of these things. But, back then he had been no more than a kid, and the people teaching him hadn’t been nearly as kind or understanding.

Is he only hurting her by allowing her to simply watch him work?

In a way, yes, and he knew as much.

So, when the question comes, he pauses, turning to look at her and offering her the pokéball he had been holding.

”If you can’t deal with a pokémon like this, how will you deal with rival gangs or the League? Knowing how to fight is important, but in this case you need to do so in a way that won’t damage our merchandise.” He nods towards his Starmie, as if to bring her attention to the pokémon. ”I’m using Hesione because she can confuse, paralyse, and even freeze at convenience, and then I can return the pokémon unharmed while also not taking many risks. Make sense?”

Mars will always be methodical about his work while doing it in the most efficient way possible, but those are things that need to be learned.

Jessie blinked, her mouth opening and ready to refuse as he began to hand her the ball he was holding. But it was placed in her hand, seemingly heavy as she looked down at it. She wasn't sure what was waiting inside for her.

Looking up, she nodded as he explained, only breaking eye contact to look at his Starmie. So, passive moves were important too. Right. She knew that they were key in battle to boost attack, damage, speed, and defense, but she had never considered this.

"Okay."

With a glance at Finn, Jessie released the Pokemon in the ball. A Lucario, who seemed just as angry and confused as the Houndoom.

Jessie released her Vaporeon, Marsh, who used BABY-DOLL EYES to appear less threatening and make the Lucario more infatuated with him. Lucy, her Raichu, also used TAIL WHIP to lower his guard.

"Like this?"

Being methodical about everything he does is something that was instilled by force in him all too long ago – as is being effective, precise, and always putting his mission first and foremost.Admittedly, tonight is an interesting one, because technically speaking his mission isn’t just the task before them, but teaching Jessie too.

So, he watches her, paying close attention to all of her actions. He watches as her Vaporeon lures the Lucario into a fake sense of safety, and as her Raichu causes it to lower its guard even more. And, as he watches, he smiles just so faintly.

”Yeah, exactly like that. Well done. Now you can inspect the pokémon’s condition and return it to its pokéball without having to worry about the possibility of an attack, unless it were a really aggressive one... A severely injured pokémon ends up being of less value in the market, and you don’t know how many grunts make that mistake.”

Which is why he's here, isn't it?

Jessie thrived on praise, so when Mars told her that she had performed well, she couldn't help but visibly relax and smile. She nodded, looking over the Lucario before allowing it to go back into the ball it had been brought in.

With the potential threat of danger subsided, she sighed, leaning back against the box.

"That's a lot more work than I thought we were going to have to do... do you have to do this with, like, everyone that's new?" she asked, looking back at Mars.

Once the Lucario is back in its pokéball, his attention turns back to the tablet, listing the pokémon’s condition just as he had done for all those that came before it.

In the corner of his eye, he notices Jessie, seeing the way she sighs and leans against a box as if exhausted.

”Yeah…Grunt work isn’t exactly glamorous or easy, is it?”

He chuckles, but a sigh follows this, putting the tablet down on a box and looking at her.

”I’m usually too busy to train new recruits, it’s not my main task as an admin. I do make a few exceptions, though.”

Jessie couldn't help but tease Mars, the feelings of unease from earlier set aside as a sly smirk settled on her lips. She placed her hands on her hips, leaning forward to prompt a response from him.
