it's safe to say the region has accepted them, so much so that they're now relied on to protect it, but is it enough for matias to feel like he belongs?

his gaze drifts off to lady virizion.

"she basically stalked me."

he laughs only to be cut short when a particularly heavy MAGICAL LEAF slaps against his cheek.

"the swords of justice were at the tournament in slateport earlier this year. they were watching, searching for the best trainers."

a fond memory.

'it appears as though the gods care not for their chosen's faith.'

if she had not been tethered to celebi, would someone who lacked her religious fervor been selected in her stead? 

'i'll need to look into this more.'

while she wasn't one to question the gods, she wanted to know what potentially drove them to select one human over another.

'there has to be a trend somewhere.'

"well," she murmured, nodding in acknowledgement. "the lady's choice was indeed a wise one. the silphs are known  for their talent. i'm surprised that celebi remains at my side even now. i'm not particularly amazing in combat. so i doubt i would have drawn the lady's gaze."

as she spoke, her shaymin tottered in. the shiny pokemon snuffled at the ground, drawn in by the fragrance of fruit, jam and roasted vegetable. the hedgehog brushed against the goddess's legs, before attempting to prop themselves upon them in order to gain her attention; hopeful to partake in what remained of her meal.

"i don't believe combat plays a huge part in it. at least not always."

in the swords of justice's case — most likely. but they could've also just wanted to pick the most notable people and the leaderboard gave them just that.

matias greets the approaching shaymin with a small wave, watching as it teeters over to greet virizion. her attention shifts down to the shiny grass-type, quick to return the greeting with a dip of her head.

"i imagine in your case, celebi might have preferred your kindness."

hypno intervened before the shaymin could continue to pester the noble goddess any further, offering the small creature of divine origins a piece of bread with jam heartily smeared on its surface. the grass-type accepted the offering, their cheeks soon bulging with the food as they quietly settled underneath the table. 

"and yet a good portion of the population interpreted my 'kindness' as a sort of weakness."

she paused only to take a sip of her drink, her expression shifting from outwardly warm to neutral. 

"but i can't blame them. i publicly withdrew from the league and basically disappeared in a sense. but celebi is a creature of peace and so am i. we weren't built for - " 

cait gestured vaguely, struggling to find the correct word.

" - all of this nonsense."

matias fills the brief void with a thought of his own.

"war?"

he chuckles, shaking his head.

"some of the hoenn population can be a bit odd at times. judgmental and cruel even to those who contribute to the region in ways other than fighting."

then comes a sigh.

"for what it's worth...i don't blame you."

sometimes he wishes he could take a step back and adopt peace. but peace has always been an unattainable concept for him.

a smile returned to her lips, a small shimmer of relief emerging. 

"thank you. i believe i was always meant to be a civilian. and now that i have two on the way, i want to maintain that lifestyle if at all possible."

she paused and contemplated the life she presently held. it was a similar expression to 's whenever he eyed her belly and mulled over the existence of his children. 

"i wish senon thought the same. but that man's a soldier in body and spirit. celebi and i could keep him safe here, if he'd let us. he wouldn't have to go to the front. but he's... stubborn. and i always worry he won't come back to me. do you - "

cait paused momentarily and then pressed onward.

" - do you ever worry about miss eva?"

it's easy for him to mirror her smile. to understand the small shimmer of relief that graces her features. it eases him, too.

the mention of has him quiet for a moment. but he nods.

"all the time."

and chuckles.

"she's more than capable of holding her own. but war, violence, conflict... they're unpredictable. uncontrollable. sometimes all it takes is one mistake."

sometimes things are just out of his control. it's a crushing realization but it's one he's had time to come to terms with.

"we've had a few close calls but we're still here."
