It was crazy to think that this was where his whole adventure into the Hoenn region originally started. Maverick has accomplished so much in the three years he had been here. Yet, the burnt scarred man had nothing to show for it. Yes, he held the gym leader spotlight for a short time. Too short if you ask him now. And now, he is struggling to get in on most of the gym’s wait list. Maverick now knew the pain of waiting for a slot to open up, remembering when his gym openings filled up swiftly.

A sigh escaped him, warm crimson colored orbs over the man faces that lingered in the slateprots upper distract area. It was also funny that despite living here for so long, there wasn’t too many familiar faces in the crowds. To be fair though, the man wasn’t the social type. A low growl caught his attention, gaze shifted to his six foot seven rapidash skull wearing canine who eyed something off in the distance. Her nostrils flared, her keen hunter prowess caught whiff of something interesting. A brow rose, motioning with a stiff nod for her to lead the way. Azula moved into the dark ally, Maverick swiftly following without looking to see if anyone else would follow.

That’s weird. He was usually pretty good with directions. So how…had he gotten so hopelessly lost? Paxton wasn’t familiar with Slateport. He’d been in Slateport briefly when he had arrived to the region, and then promptly moved to Mauville for a bit and then eventually Lillycove. He hadn’t had much reason to explored Slateport, and even after his retirement and subsequent new job, he still hadn’t had much of a reason to come to Slateport. [break][break]

So, he’d come to explore. A coworker had suggested it after slapping a little coupon book in his hands. And Paxton was trying to get out of the house more. The bazaar had sounded promising, if only he could find it. “This...might’ve been the wrong turn…” he murmured before hearing the distinct clicking of nails on concrete. He stopped turning to look at the source before tilting his head as a Houndoom peered out of a side alley. He tensed up for a moment, unsure if it was hostile before a trainer soon followed it. OH, perfect. “’Scuse me.” He waved at Maverick. “Can ya give me some directions please?”

Nostrils flared intensely as the canine sniffed out the peculiar scent, following the smell into the dark alley. That was, until the canine met what the scent was. She took a step back, the human calling out to her master and approached without hesitation. Maverick met the man gaze, a brow rose when he asked for directions. Azula let a low growl rattle in her chest, only to be silenced when her master stepped forward to interact with the stranger. "Uhhh…” he started, shoving his hands into his pockets and shoulders rose and fell with a shrug, “I guess. What are you looking for?”

In the corner of his eye, the man spotted the bug type. He left his gaze flickered to the houndoom, motioning with a stiff nod towards the wild pokemon. Azula let out a grumble, moving to take down the bug type pokemon with FIRE BLAST. It shrieked, passing out within seconds. Once the creature was out, the hell hound nudged her trainers arm to indicate it was out. The burnt scarred man tossed an empty ball, hitting the mark. Azula lingered by the ball, waiting to pick it up and bring it back to her master once successful captured..

He watched a Litleo scurry by before moving closer to Maverick as his Houndoom went to work on a nearby Silcoon. He watched it char the poor bug type pretty quickly before giving the stranger a polite smile once more. “If y’don’t mind…I’m trying to find the museum.” He said, holding up a pamphlet he’d gotten from the hotel. The map attached was a blurred mess of color.

“While walkin’ around I uh…I got some mess on my brochure…and I sort of left my phone in the hotel.” He explained with a small shrug.

A light nudge of a nose on his pants pocket made his gaze drop to Azula, a pokeball between her jaws. He pulled his hand out of his pocket, opened palm for her to drop it in his name before the man’s hand retreated back into said pocket. Gaze lifted back to the stranger, brows scrunched. “Oh yeah. I know where that is,” he paused, his other hand lifting to point in the direction of the oceanic museum, “If you head towards the water, you’ll find big flashy sign that will lead you straight to it.”

Hand fell, crimson colored orbs fell upon the man once more. “You must not be from around here.” Maverick passed when a flicker of moment of something blue in the corner of his eye got his attention. Once again, he gave her a stiff nod in the direction of said creature. She grumbled again, nostrils flared to hunt down that pokemon with a SLUDGE BOMB attack. Of course, tossing a ball once it was down.

While she did that, the man extended his hand out to offer a handshake. “The name is Maverick… Maverick Ryder,” he introduced himself, hand retreated back to his pockets once more once the handshake was complete or decline, “What brings you to Hoenn?”

Paxton turned, following Maverick's gestures and trying to commit it to memory. If he could navigate in the field for 2 days straight, he could figure out what the guy meant when he said 'towards water'. It wasn't like the walk bothered him anwyay. He nodded in understanding before turning to the stranger and his Houndoom once more. "Yeah, I'm visiting from Lilycove." he said with an awkward smile. [break][break]

He wasn't used to being unsure of his surroundings, preferring to understand and stick to them. But perhaps that's why his colleagues were trying otr get him to branch out more on his time off. Joules watched a Komala yawn at them before zapping it with some electricity. The poor normal type dropped to the ground only to be picked up by the Magnezone and brought back to Paxton. He caught it immediately, murmuring a thanks before looking back at his guide. "Nice t'meet you Maverick. I'm Paxton. Concordas." He added the last part after realizing MAverick had done a full intro. "Oh- uh- work transfer. I sort of swapped jobs a bit and now I'm stationed at Lilycove." he explained ebfore gesturing at them. "What about you? Are you a local or here vacationing too?"

After Azula defeated and returned the sphere back to Maverick, a chubby greedent waddled out into view. Being the predator the canine was, the sight of an easy target couldn’t be passed up. A low snarl ripped through her throat, leaping towards the normal type with her muzzle wide open to CRUNCH down on the chunky money of a creature. It froze in fear, allowing the canine to catch it before she brought it back to her master for him to capture.

And the man did, tapping an empty sphere on the frightened pokemon between her clenched teeth. Maverick rolled his eyes at her, but continued their conversation. “I have been here for several years now,” he started, honestly liking the idea that this person didn’t know he was once a gym leader, “at first just to visit the region. But now, its kind nice here. Haven’t had the urge to leave or really the desire too.” Shoulders rose and fell with a casually shrug, unsure what to tell him.

Being a man who isn’t the best at small talk, Maverick let out a soft sigh and continued to try to be social. “How’s the new job treating, ya? Does it seem with it?”

Paxton is quick to shake his head as Joules beeped a quick question when the Unfezant floated by. With that, the dual type let the pokemon glide away. He looked over at Azula as she trotted back with her prize before looking back at MAverick as he spoke up. "Oh, nice. Hoenn does have a nice weather all around." The place was pretty tropical with the exception of a few locations. But sometimes 70 and sunny was all you needed. [break][break]

"Eh. It's alright. Takes good care of me." he said with a snort. "What do you do? I'm a police officer up in Lilycove." [break][break]

Maverick wasn’t a man who was much for small talk. Honestly, he hardly talks at all. It didn’t matter where or who, he was a man of a few words. He preferred solitude. But despite that face he asked a rather common question, he didn’t expected it to be thrown back at him.

A brow rose, unsure of how to answer it. But when he replied, the man didn’t hesitate as his shoulders rolled in a casually shrug. “I use to be a gym leader here,” he admitted, gaze shifted to Azula while the canine dropped the sphere that was holding the greedent he just caught, “But have sense retired.” Why was he telling this stranger this? “I have been doing odd jobs for the league sense to make ends meet.”

The man paused, spotting the mothim in the corner of his eye. His gaze fell upon the canine, giving her a stiff nod in the direction of the wild pokemon. Her eyes fell upon her next target, a predator on the hunt. The taste of sulfur tickled her throat, intending to set the bug on fire with a FIRE BLAST so her master can caught it.

As soon as Azula left to take care of the bug, the burnt scarred man returned his attention to Paxton. “I retired to focus on getting a spot in the elite four.” His gaze lifted to the sky this time, like he was deep in thought despite talking out loud. “But if a gym because available again, I might unretire. I’m not gunna lie, I kind of miss it.” Again, why was he telling him this? He didn’t know.

"Damn. Must be pretty strong then." Paxton noted as a Snubbul ran past them and he waved at it before it disappeared. Joules beeped every so often, keeping watch from above and looking out at Azula as she took down the Mothim for her trainer. Paxton had made no indication he had wanted them to move yet, so Joules stayed out of the way not wanting to cramp the group.

"Oh? Did you hit a wall or somethin'?" Paxton asked. If all you did was battling with out break, anyone would get a little burnt out. He assumed anyway. Paxton had never gotten to do what he loved for very long. "Don't wanna be Champion then? You're already grabbing badges right?" he asked before adding, "I thought Gym Leaders could just promote into the E4."

There's quiet as Paxton considered this before asking a different question. "Have you considered taking up a gym elsewhere? What's special about Slateport?"
