It was uncommon to find Dominic quite so alone. He hadn't had a chance to really bond with Lynx since he'd found the little Riolu, though, and decided it was time to change that. They'd trekked deep into Granite Cave, leaving the rest of the party safely at camp not far from the cave entrance. Dom knew they could take care of themselves for a few hours and was looking forward to spending some uninterrupted training time with Lynx. The little Fighting-type frowned as he followed his trainer into the cave, the Riolu jogging to keep up. He didn't seem entirely sure why they were here, even if Dom had explained it to him a few times by this point. They finally reached an open, cavernous area and Dom set down his lantern. The light filled the room, stretching from wall to wall comfortably and throwing odd shadows.[break][break]

"Okay, Lynx! You ready to follow my workout plan? If you want guns like this—" he flexed an arm "—you gotta keep up. No slacking, bro!" Lynx furrowed his little brow but nodded in determination. Dom grinned. "Excellent! First thing's first, we gotta warm up those muscles. Follow me." He led the Riolu to one side of the cave and together they started line drills, sprinting from one end of the room to the other before turning as quickly as possible to sprint back.

While many things with Rae can be high intensity, sometimes she likes to wind down and take it slow. Technically she and her Pokemon are on a rest day, so she’s not planning anything more strenuous than a walk through the cave. PATCHES the EEVEE is the only one of her Pokemon with her while her other team members rest up. Patches doesn’t get the super intense training that the rest of her team does but she loves to feel included, so Rae lets her do some light training. And then she just had to join for the walk. Patches is running around and exploring every nook and cranny of the cave while Rae laughs at her antics.[break]

She hears footfalls from around the next corner and spots a figure sprinting back and forth across a wide-open part of the cave. She and Patches make eye contact and she grins at the Eevee. Oh, it’s on. She shrugs her bag while doing a few seconds of stretching before she jogs over, a smile on her face and Patches at her heels.[break]

“Yo! What’s up?” [break]

So much for a relaxing walk.

His heart was already pounding loud enough that he didn't even notice when another person entered the same small cavern. It wasn't until she spoke up (causing Dom to jump slightly) that he realized they had company. He slowed to a stop, patting Lynx on the head, and gave the woman a brief wave.[break][break]

"Hey! Sorry if you're, uh, trying to hike through here." He gestured vaguely towards the other end of the cavern where an exit tunnel sits. "I figured it was a good spot to do some training with Lynx here." The Riolu was practically attached to Dom's leg, peering out from behind the man's calf at the strangers. Dom grinned at him. "Oh, I'm Dominic, by the way. I'm a ranger cadet." He wiped a hand on his pants before offering it in handshake to Rae.

“Oh, no,” she assures him with a dismissal wave of her hand. She reaches out and takes his hand, giving him a firm handshake. “Really, it’s no problem! I’m Rae, an athlete, and this cute little gal with me is Patches.”[break]

At the sound of her name, Patches the Eevee walks forward, going to investigate the Riolu clinging to Dominic’s leg. She sniffs at him before letting out a friendly chirp, batting at Lynx’s leg with her front paw in greeting.[break]

Rae watches the Pokemon with a softer smile before she looks back up to Dom, the competitive fire returning to her eyes. “In fact, the sound of you two training got Patches and I fired up! We were wondering if we could join in on your training? I’m sure you two must know some pretty awesome stuff from being Rangers!”

"Hello, there, Patches," he said with a wave to the Eevee. She was way more interested in Lynx, though, which was fine by Dom. Lynx, on the other hand, squinted suspiciously at Patches, leaning away slightly when she pawed at him. "He's a little shy," Dom said before turning his attention back up to Rae. Lynx shot him a glare. How dare you.[break][break]

"Yeah? That's awesome! I'm always down to have some fire training partners. We were just starting off with a warm-up, y'know get the blood pumping. But we could totally jump right into—" he trailed off as a pair of shapes came into view, entering the cavern side by side. They reached the pool of light that filled the cavern and were revealed to be a Hitmonchan and a Hitmonlee. They stared down the pair with piercing stares, shifting their attention between Dom and Rae. Dom cleared his throat, pointing to each in turn as if he were introducing them to Rae. "That's Hitmonchan, the Punching Pokemon. And that one is Hitmonlee, the Kicking Pokemon. They're pretty self-explanatory. I think maybe we got these bros fired up, too." He grinned, turning fully to Rae. "Ever do a few rounds in the ring with a Fighting-type?"

Patches gives a quick flick of her tail as a response to Dom, but keeps her attention on Lynx. She ducks down into a playful pose before pouncing towards Lynx, not tackling the Riolu but landing near him, intending to poke some fun and goad him into playing with her.

Rae, while wanting to maintain her Eevee’s sense of wonder and playfulness, doesn’t want her to overstep her bounds. She whistles to her, trying to call her off but to little effect. “Sorry about her,” she says sheepishly. “She gets a little excited sometimes…”[break]

But when the Hitmons walk up, she loses focus on whatever Patches is doing. “Can’t say I have,” she says, shrugging off her winter coat and letting it fall to the ground. She smiles over at him, the glint of competition in her eye. She cracks her knuckles. She’s pumped up. “But it looks like there’s a first time for everything. Bet’cha I can take mine down before you can!”[break]

And with that she’s off towards the Hitmonlee, running at it before its springy leg sends her flying right back. She lands at his feet, groaning.[break]

“Alright. Guess I gotta have some strategy, huh…”
