When word got out that Rockets were moving through the forests to rural Hoenn in an attempt to attack it, Thomas jumped at the opportunity to beat them back. Joining him in this endeavor was Alexei Ivanov, the Fortree Gym Leader. It was safe to say that at this point, Thomas may as well be his assistant, considering his position within the League compared to Thomas' own. Nevertheless, he came to trust the Unova-born Gym Leader after all the time they spent working together.

Up ahead, Hotsuma the Greninja would scout the area, utilizing the trees and foliage as cover while observing the Rocket's movements from up ahead. Thanks to being a creature built for speed and stealth, he was able to keep up with and even get ahead of the Rockets, who were forced to go on foot, due to the terrain being less than favorable for riding on mounts. Thanks to the camera mounted on its head, it was able to get footage of the oncoming Rockets, which was being sent to a tablet Thomas was holding.

While Thomas had eyes on the Rockets, his Pokemon were going to work on setting up for their arrival up ahead. Kiryu the Flygon was Digging up holes in the ground, before his Dartrix covered the pits with leaves, leaving a litany of pitfalls for the Rockets to stumble into. In an elevated position overlooking the area, Colt was waiting patiently for the Rockets to come in, and for his partners to finish setting up traps, primarily for the Dartrix to finish up, so he could take position opposite of him.

"Your Galvantula gonna be able to set up some webbing to greet these bastards?", Thomas asked Alexei quietly.

After watching the feed, Thomas send a signal to the Greninja through the tablet to retreat, which would be sent through a low vibration on the device. The Greninja would quietly make its way ahead of the Rockets through the trees and foliage. Its speed would allow it to get ahead of the Rockets quickly, and make its way back to Thomas, utilizing the tree branches to nimbly avoid the pitfalls that its allies set up.

“All you had to do was ask,” he replied in the same quiet tone, quickly releasing his Galvantula in a flash of red light and pointing around the dark forest.[break][break]

“Molni, do what you do best—lay a lot of your Sticky Web around the area—make sure that whoever heads that way would get stuck in it… if you encounter anything, make sure to be on your guard and strike only as needed,” he said to the tarantula, who clicked her pincers together before skittering off into the darkness.[break][break]

At the same time, he’d sent out his Weavile and Magmortar; both standing ready as the rearguard. While he had half a mind to send out his two best Pokémon as well, he decided to save the Salamence and Braviary for much later, when the ruckus came much closer to where they were—he didn’t want to spread his sources too thin.[break][break]

“Luna, Agni. Moment you both see something suspicious, don’t attack it unless they attack you first. Wouldn’t want something bad to happen now, would we,” he said to the other two veteran Pokémon on his team.

The Rocket Grunts, not quite realizing that their movements had been tracked by the pair of League Members waiting for them on the other end, continued to make their way towards Oldale Town. Accompanying the men were their different Pokemon, which included the likes of Mightyena, Koffing, Arbok, Raticate, Golbat, and a couple of Meowth in the pack, the group marched menacingly through the forests, eager to greet the rural town with the force of Team Rocket. They figured that their small group would be enough to overwhelm the town, especially once backup came.

The group would stop in their tracks when it would spot a Magmortar marching towards them.

"That a Magmortar!?"

"Oh hell yes!"

"I'm calling dibs!"

"Fuck you, I saw it first!"

As the group argued among themselves over who gets the Magmortar, Hotsuma, from the shadows, would lob a Smoke Bomb in the middle of the group, blanketing the area in a thick Smokescreen in order to obscure the group's vision. As the smoke quickly rolled out, the group would start doubling over and coughing.

"Am...bush...", one of them tried to weakly call out in between violent bouts of coughing.

This would give the Weavile and the Magmortar the opportunity they needed to take out some of the grunts, before they fought back.

Of course, since they were Grunts… they didn’t know that this Magmortar already belonged to someone else. How would they know? And wasn’t it just a little bit strange to find such a powerful-looking Fire-type out here without a Trainer?[break][break]

Grunting, the Fire-type then raised one of its cannon-like arms and smirked, chuckling in its native PokéSpeak before firing off a wide-arcing Confuse Ray—if the Smokescreen attack from the Greninja hadn’t blinded their lot earlier, then surely this sudden flash of light would turn them against each other?[break][break]

Probably killed a few more brain cells than they loved to admit, too.[break][break]

Either way, the Magmortar wasn’t done yet—while it was itching to drop a Thunderbolt on the rowdy lot, he knew better than to charge ahead.[break][break]

Grunting another series of calls in a certain direction, the Weavile then came swooping in—and without warning immediately dropped a large Icicle Crash among the now-confused group of Rocket Grunts, who were sent scattering in various directions due to the size of the large icicle that the Weavile had launched right then and there.[break][break]

Squinting through the madness, the Weavile chuckled before running over close to where the Greninja was, pointing at the scattering Grunts—they were much easier to deal with when separated.[break][break]

Back at where Alexei waited, he thought he heard the familiar crashing noise of ice shattering against something, but thought nothing of it, at least for the moment.[break][break]

“Guess my companions found some rats to deal with,” he said with a hint of a smirk on his face.

As the group was sent running and scattered, Hotsuma would track the one closest to him. The stoic ninja would give the Weavile a nod in response as he watched the rocket desperately run, a Mightyena trailing behind him. The frog would wait for the right moment to strike, patiently allowing his prey to get in close enough to their little field of traps.

Meanwhile, Clint would spot a Rocket Grunt making a break through the forest. Though he seemed lost, he was getting closer to the other side of the forest. And most importantly, he was getting close to one of the pitfall traps they set up earlier. Though the Grunt wasn't going to walk into one on the path he was going, the Dartrix had a way to get him to stumble into it.

Once both of their targets were right where they wanted them to be, the two Pokemon made their move. Hotsuma would lob a volley of softer Water Shuriken at his grunt. While they weren't sharp enough to slice into anything, being used more for impact. Meanwhile, Clint would unleash a Razor Leaf volley of his own. Both attacks would cause the two Rockets to stumble around, desperately shielding their faces, before they'd step into the pile of leaves, which quickly caved under their weight.

Waiting for them in the holes below was the Sticky Web set up by Alexei's Galvantula moments earlier, before Clint would've covered up the pits with leaves.

This left their Pokemon without trainers, and easy picking for Colt the Clawitzer, who blasted the two Mightyena with an Aura Sphere each.

The one Luna had her sights set on had a Meowth for a companion, too busy grooming its fur to even notice that his human owner was under attack—a sudden crashing noise tipped off the Normal-type a little too late as the Weavile had taken to the shadows and had dropped an Icicle Crash around the two, cutting them off from their route of escape.[break][break]

“You useless—do something!” the male Grunt shouted, and the Meowth continued to ignore him, completely self-absorbed with grooming its fur.[break][break]

“Oh, you’re useless!” he shouted, quickly attempting to recall the Meowth—but not before the Weavile had rocketed forward with an Agility, too fast for the human to see, and had clobbered the Normal-type sideways with a powerful Night Slash, sending it reeling before it crashed into the wall of ice that had fallen behind the Grunt.[break][break]

As the human tried to make a getaway, a few steps suddenly sent him screaming all manner of profanities as he fell into a pit trap, trapped by a Galvantula’s Sticky Web and getting even more stuck the more he tried to move and get out![break][break]

“Useless Pokémon!” he continued to shout as the Weavile then proceeded to punt the shocked Meowth in, before dropping a host of Ice Shard attacks into the pit before ever so casually knocking the large icicle from earlier over the hole—well, mostly. She still had the mercy to leave some breathing room for the trapped Grunt as she made her way to help Agni.[break][break]

Over where the Magmortar was dealing with another Grunt who’d managed to sic a Koffing on him and was about to release an explosion of Poison Gas, the Magmortar was quick enough to counter with another Confuse Ray before dropping a Thunderbolt not too long afterward on the Pokémon, which elicited a scowl from the Grunt who was now attempting not to rip his eyes out at the unfairness of it all—he wanted the Magmortar for himself, but fuck, how the hell did it even know Thunderbolt?![break][break]

A Pokéball was thrown at the Magmortar, but of course since the Fire-type already belonged to someone else, the containment capsule eventually rebounded backward before hitting the Grunt full in the face—and a sudden second blast of Thunderbolt came chasing down not too long afterward.[break][break]

Nothing too strong to kill the Grunt, just enough to stun-lock it before the Magmortar casually shoved it down a telltale pile of leaves and watched as the stunned Grunt fell into another one of the pitfall traps set up by the Flygon from earlier.

A couple of grunts would immediately see their comrades begin to be picked off, being sent into pitfall traps, and immediately bank away from the path they were going. They figured that they would be safer off that path, that perhaps they could even sneak up on the trainers commanding the Pokemon that were picking them off one by one.

The Scizor stepping in front of them would quickly prove them wrong.

"Fuck me, that's just what we need...", a Grunt would remark.

"I got this! Arbok, Fire Fang!", the Grunt ordered.

"Raticate, Super Fang!", ordered the first grunt urgently.

Ripper would wait for the Arbok to get close, allowing it to quickly close the distance, before dashing to the side with heightened Agility. The Arbok would find itself biting into thin air. The Scizor would stop as the Raticate reached him, the fangs biting down on him, through his armor. Ripper would grunt in pain, before throwing off the Raticate. In order to compensate for the Intimidating presence of the Arbok, Ripper performed a Swords Dance to boost his fighting spirits.

"We got this! Spray that fucker with Gastro Acid, then use Fire Fang again!", the Grunt would order. Before the Arbok could go through with the attempt to hose down the Scizor in Gastro Acid, it would find itself being lifted into the air with Telekinesis, before being blasted into a nearby tree with a Psychic burst. As the Grunts looked on in disbelief, Ripper would rush up to the Raticate with a Bullet Punch, before following up with a brutal Double Hit.

Before the Grunts could reach for their belts, Freke would use Telekinesis to throw one of the Grunts into nearby webbing set up by the allied Galvantula, while Ripper would grab the other grunt with his pincers, dragging him back over to the pitfall traps, where he'd roughly throw the grunt into the hole, right on top of the grunt that was blasted in by Hotsuma. The sound of their groaning could be heard by those who were close.

With the Grunt taken care of, the wounded Scizor would raise a pincer into the air, clamping down twice while in the sight of the snipers. Colt, spotting his teammate's signal, would fire off a Heal Pulse at the Scizor, healing the injury he took at the hands of the Raticate earlier.

The Galvantula was now playing ‘catch me if you can’ with a Grunt who had a Golbat headed in his way—knowing that if the other got its fangs into her little body she’d be good as toast. But luckily, she was the master and weaver of all the Sticky Web paths, so traversing the planted area was but a simple matter for her.[break][break]

Hearing the loud shrieking of the Golbat not too far behind her, she then scuttled her way up a tree and watched as the wide-mouthed Bat Pokémon flew by, still trying to look for her. All it took was a sudden drop from behind to catch the Golbat by surprise with a suddenly-fired Electro Ball, catching it in the back and forcing it to sail right into one of the sticky, webbed-out traps that lay up ahead in its flight path.[break][break]

When that was done, the Galvantula then threaded back up to its hiding place, and when its human owner came looking for the Golbat to see where the hell it had gone off to, a sudden burst of Bug Buzz then caught it by surprise.[break][break]

This then caused the human to clap his hands over his ears as the loud, irritating vibrating noise shook the area before another Sticky Web shot out from the tarantula’s pincers, weaving its way around in a sticky mass and cocooning it once she was done.[break][break]

Over where Alexei was waiting, he didn’t know he was about to get snuck up on by a Grunt that had a Persian had a loud, screeching noise announced its presence—and a Salamence suddenly dropped out from the sky, roaring and Intimidating the Normal-type. He then turned around on the spot, before letting out a sigh of relief.[break][break]

“Thanks for the save, Gabriel. Deal with him for me?” he asked, making sure to move aside so that the draconid could shoo the human into the pit that wasn’t too far away from where he stood.[break][break]

“Get ‘im!” the Grunt shouted, before the Persian shot forward—while cowed by the Intimidate, it prepared for a Slash—only to walk right into a controlled blast of Flamethrower before flying around and then using his tail to literally knock the human forward, so distracted by the sudden peppering blast of flames—right into another pitfall trap![break][break]

“WHOA!” came the yell from below as the Salamence then shunted the Persian towards the trap with another controlled blast of Flamethrower on the safe side, watching it tumble into the hole not too long after.

In the chaos unfolding, two Grunts would manage to break through the traps and sniper fire being laid down upon them. This would come at the cost of their Pokemon, getting sniped by the Dartrix and Clawitzer perched up. As their Pokemon fell into the pits, the Rockets would desperately scurry for cover, just trying to get the hell out of there. Finally, upon reaching the 'end' of the forest, they would spot one of the two Trainers responsible for the ambush, seemingly without Pokemon to guard him.

Even if they themselves no longer had Pokemon, the two men knew they outnumbered the man, and were carrying weapons on them. They figured their chances were good, as they drew their knives, and came at the trainer. Thomas would see the men coming, quickly sidestepping the first grunt, and harshly shoving him in the direction he was going, causing him to stumble forward and fall to the ground. Thomas would grab the wrist of the second grunt, before redirecting him into the nearest tree, and throwing him into it.

As the Grunt smacked into the tree, Thomas would follow up by kicking his head right into the tree, pivoting into the kick as he did so. The Rocket would slump against the tree, dropping his knife in the process. Immediately, Thomas would kick the knife as far away as possible. The first grunt would get up, and seeing that the trainer's back was turned, would attempt to charge him, knife in hand. What the man wasn't expecting was for a Flygon to emerge from underneath him, lifting him into the air, before throwing him to the ground from several feet in the air.

Thomas would pull out two pairs of cable tie handcuffs, tying up the Rocket he knocked out first, before tying the second Rocket up once he was thrown to the ground. Before going over to check on his partner, Thomas would pick up both knives, and pat down both unconscious men for knives, or other tools the men could've concealed for the purpose of escaping cable ties.

He’d seen it coming—while his companion was seemingly outnumbered two-to-one, his own Pokémon were making quick work of the rest of the Grunts—and he wondered if even he was going to get snuck up on from behind like what had happened to Thomas.[break][break]

Thankfully, the opportunity for that was close to nil, because his Braviary had been hiding in the trees all along and was waiting for the perfect moment to strike![break][break]

A loud shriek from the avian announced a sudden, disruptive presence, and Alexei had enough time to turn around in time to see that there was a—there were actually two Grunts headed his way, intent on getting their hands on him! The sudden shriek had called the Salamence out of hiding as well, and both the draconid and the avian quickly made a beeline for the two.[break][break]

So surprised were the two Grunts at the sight of the looming Salamence and the fierce Braviary that their companion Koffing and Golbat shrieked and ran away, clearly scared by a larger than life Dragon-type that was pretty much ready to unleash hell on them in every single painful way possible.[break][break]

A sudden Tailwind blew from behind the Braviary, before the Salamence roared out once more, trying to Intimidate the Grunts into running towards where one of the last few pitfall traps were. While this had served to scare them, they didn’t seem to want to back down, so the Braviary let out a piercing shriek—and a few moments later, a Weavile, a Magmortar and a Galvantula converged on where the last two Grunts were now trying to escape.[break][break]

“Get them,” was all Alexei would say before the two mooks were rushed by five powerful Pokémon, each preparing an assault attack, ready to bring them into custody.[break][break]

All too soon the two were brought down and subsequently tied down, some distance away from the other two that had tried to accost his companion. The rest of the Grunts were either stuck in pitfall traps or almost buried alive under a web of sticky string courtesy of a Galvantula’s machinations.[break][break]

“Well, I think we got them all without killing any of them, don’t you think?” he said in Thomas’ direction; a job well done.
