Deep breaths. In, out.[break][break]

It's her first gym challenge; her first proper one, anyways. Though the badge from John Sullivan is proudly displayed in her bedroom she hadn't won it by traditional means— heck, she hadn't even won the battle.[break][break]

But it's been months since then, and she and her team have come a long ways. A badge like this is more of a formality, tangible proof of her accomplishments. She hopes it's enough to make the most surly member of her team proud— maybe she can even impress her pseudo mentor MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]

She walks in hand-in-hand with her Lopunny, the pink rabbit providing an anchor of comfort while her Musharna floats idly above her shoulder. With her are some of her most beloved companions as well, chosen because she trusts and believes in them rather than for battle prowess. After all, this isn't a straight up brawl of a match. Were that the case, she'd stand no chance! Instead, Luka hopes that the strength of her bond with her team can get them through this.[break][break]

"Hello?" Her voice echoes around the vast establishment, nerves clinging to the tail ends of wavering syllables. She swallows and allows Bonbon to tug her forwards. "Excuse me," she tries again, approaching the reception area with a softly hesitant smile, "Um...I-I'm here for a gym challenge? But I'm, erm, not sure where to go..."

It just so happened that Claire had stepped out and Alexei himself had wandered in, because he’d asked her to run a few errands while she wasn’t too busy out front—

And there was a familiar-looking Lopunny headed his way!

“Hello there, Miss Luka,” he greeted with a wave. “So you’re my challenger for today?” he continued, hoping to ease down the tension that he could feel radiating off her in literal waves.

“You’re nervous, I can tell,” he added quietly. “Relax, okay? Nothing bad’s going to happen out here. Besides, I wouldn’t want to be on the other end of your magical girl Lopunny’s wrath!” he chuckled.

He was trying his hardest to diffuse the tension—was it working?

"Hi! Yes, um...h-hi! Again. Erm, I mean...y-yes, that's me!"[break][break]

She does little to instill any confidence in herself or her abilities. Standing in front of the gym leader she suddenly feels so timid and small, like a child about to take an exam. It's ridiculous. Alexei had been perfectly lovely during Remiel Calcifet's holiday party, so there's no reason to be so intimidated by him now.[break][break]

A soft paw squeezes around her hand in gentle assurance. Luka gives her Lopunny a grateful smile in return and faces Alexei again as slightly less of a trembling catastrophe.[break][break]

"Sorry, um...I guess you could say I'm a little nervous," she admits with a twinkling laugh. "But you're right! Bonbon is a force to be reckoned with," she says, and the shiny Lopunny squeaks in agreement.[break][break]

So is the rest of her team. Luka is not nervous because she doubts their abilities, but because she lacks the confidence to lead them effectively.[break][break]

"Erm. Your aviary is beautiful, by the way. Is this, um...where we'll be having our match?"

“In here? Oh, no,” he remarked with a chuckle. “This is just the reception area!” he added with another flourish.

It was true—there were the usual trappings of a front desk, a waiting area, and several doors that led to the inner workings of the Sanctuary.

“The outdoor arena’s out back, follow me,” he remarked as he gestured over at one of the several doors—the one where challengers frequently went through in order to get to the outdoor, open-air arena.

Opening the door, he awaited her to go through first.

“After you.”

The sight that awaited her outside was literal nature—the only noticeable signs that this was part of a Gym was the open-air arena outlined with white paint.

Nature abound around the entire place, and there were many perches scattered around the entire place; more than enough for all of his feathered ‘children’ to alight on and watch whatever chaos was going to unfold whenever Alexei accepted challenges.

Luka follows, all smiles and polite nods. Her nerves have settled in her stomach like sediment in water, but they churn up again if she thinks about them too long. Bonbon chitters again as they fall in step together, the rabbit’s pace quickening to match her trainer’s stride. Low heels click against tile before they’re muffled by the grass; even with all her preparations, she’d neglected to think of proper footwear.[break][break]

“Oh!”[break][break]

Her eyes widen to saucers as she takes it all in, summer green hues matching the plush grass underfoot and the trees that stretch high into the air. The air smells fresh and vaguely earthy, and carries the scent of pine. Perhaps it’s engineered like this, or perhaps it’s just a blustery day, but the wind that rushes through the aviary almost feels alive.[break][break]

For a moment, Luka feels as though she can understand a bird’s innate instinct for flight. As the wind billows around her and tousles her hair, she wants to leap into it and let it carry her up, up, up into the heavens. [break][break]

But she blinks, feet firmly planted, and turns to Alexei with a smile. [break][break]

“This is incredible! It feels like the sky goes on for miles. So…i-is this where we start, then?”

He was much pleased with her reaction to the general air that stretched out endlessly above them—

“Yep, this is where we start off, on the ground,” he remarked as he brought out an extra pair of goggles and handed them out to her. “Get this on before we begin with the challenge proper.”

Right then and there, the crackling noise of the earpiece came on—

“One sec,” he apologized before turning around and tapping the ear piece.

“So what combination you want to get out?”

“Three.”

“Oh that one?”

“Yep.”

He then turned around to face the pinkette again, before the shadow of his Aerodactyl circled above, eventually coming in for a landing.

“So here’s how this goes. You’re familiar with the game of tag, right?” he hummed. Waiting for her answer, he continued afterward.

“So it’s aerial tag, only with the caveat of a weather disturbance that will reduce visibility. Oh, and there are going to be obstacles within the weather disturbance, too.”

Little did he realize that this was also the same obstacle that Remiel Calcifet had completed when he came by for his challenge long ago.

“First part is navigation, so… are you ready?”

Right then and there, the clear skies bent and gave way to—howling, swirling grit caused by Sandstorm rippling across the controlled space.

“See you on the other side of the storm!” he said as he snapped the goggles down and hopped on the back of his Aerodactyl and flew right into the heart of the sandstorm.

Should she follow, the howling grit would press down on her—like there was a strange pressure all around. A few moments later, the beginnings of a ‘continuous avalanche of boulders, caused by Rock Slide, would start falling all around the contained space.
