Why did this entire thing feel like déjà vu to him all over again?

Here he was, again, out at Shoal Cave—only this time he was accompanied by a lot of Delibird—who would’ve thought.

Today was a ‘give Moroz and the harem’ a walk day, and he wasn’t going to spare no expense—even if they did call the Sanctuary home, the birds would always be Ice-types first anyway. And since the Shoal Cave was the only place cold enough in Hoenn for ice to reasonably form…

Plus he had to time his trip with the tides. Thankfully a friend of his had taught him the secret trick to knowing when it was low tide enough to safely venture out towards Shoal Cave…

At least he wasn’t going to be swimming there…

So here he was, surrounded by a literal gaggle of Delibird, all squawking like happy idiots because they were ‘home’, in a way, making little Delibird angels and flinging snowballs at each other.

Ever since the Weather Institute had blanketed Fortree in snow back in December, Luka's Vulpix has been restless. The icy fox, with no choice but to come accustomed to Hoenn's warm humidity, had been thoroughly spoiled by a day out in the snow. And she had quickly whipped up the rest of the ice types on Luka's team into a similar frenzy, once even going so far as to try and make it snow inside Luka's small apartment.[break][break]

Vanilla deserves this day out, as do the rest of her team that feels more inclined towards the cold. And so Luka's brought them to Shoal Cave for an afternoon of play, and perhaps a little spelunking. She's certain her archaeologist neighbor, paxton concordas, had mentioned something about a rumored treasure somewhere amidst the icy cavern...[break][break]

Whether or not it's true, it makes for a fun story. And once explained, Luka's team of ice ice babies seem to want nothing more than to hunt down some treasure. Vanilla takes point, her excited yips echoing throughout the cave as she races through the snow, her teammates close behind. Luka, in the meantime, is left to bring up the far rear while carrying her slow-moving Snom.[break][break]

The team's fearless leader comes to a skidding halt, however, when she comes across a sudden hoard of Delibird. Ah! This must be the first obstacle in their way. Vanilla yips again and paws at the ground before she charges into the group, summoning up a frigid icy wind as she prepares to do glorious battle.

Alexei was somewhere, letting the Delibirds go about the ice and snow to their own devices—because they hadn’t seen snow in a while, he couldn’t blame them for going crazy with making snow Delibird angels, for one!

The peaceful collective was then shattered by the sight of a charging Vulpix—wait, the Vulpix wasn’t the same color as Katyusha, his orange Ninetales… but it looked like a Vulpix all the same, just whiter.

At once, one of the Delibird let out a squawking cry, which made the other Delibird scatter—but left the slightly larger one, Moroz—the head of the ‘harem’—to deal with the intruder.

Who was this?!

Alexei himself was suddenly surprised with the arrival of four frightened Delibird, all screaming ~~bloody murder~~ panic and making him look up.

“Wait, what, what’s wrong?”

It was hard to think over the squawking of four panicked Delibird, so he whistled sharply, and they all quieted down.

“Take me to Moroz.”

This would then result with him (accompanied by four panicked Delibird trailing behind him) arriving on the scene in time to see that Moroz was facing off against said Vulpix, having just chucked an exploding Present at the intruder.

“Where’d this one come from?”

The scene Alexei stumbles upon is largely stacked against his poor Delibird. Vanilla is backed up by her vanguard, a Piplup and Aurorus who squeak in indignation when a present explodes in their faces— never mind that they made the first move![break][break]

But just as Vanilla is preparing to blast a dazzling gleam at the Delibird, Luka arrives on the scene. And just in time, too![break][break]

“Hey!”[break][break]

Luka locks eyes with Alexi— but no battle music plays. Instead she slips and slides on the ice towards her team to break up their fight, still carefully clutching her Snom. [break][break]

“Vanilla! Oh gosh, I’m so sorry, Monsieur...Vanilla! That’s not very nice!” [break][break]

Vanilla’s attack fades into a small puff of sparkles and she whines, scuffing a paw against the frigid cavern floor. She almost seems abashed at her rashness, and Luka’s expression softens.[break][break]

“I’m sorry,” she repeats with an equally apologetic smile. “We’re, um..we’re treasure hunting, so I guess she got a little excited. Is your Delibird okay?”

The sight of the other four Delibird made the ‘leader’ of the pack sober up, because normally while Moroz got his way—whenever Alexei would turn up followed by the other Delibird the ringleader knew when to nut up (and shut up)!

At the same time the white Vulpix had been placated by their owner, the Present—instead of it exploding, which rarely happened, it instead healed the Vulpix, as it usually did.

“Moroz, what did I tell you about attacking other—” he began as well, shaking his head in the Delibird’s direction while the other four hung around behind him, trying to make themselves as small as possible. They knew what was coming next, after all…

“Well, at least he knows when to quiet up when I’m around,” he added with an equally embarrassed grin, scratching the back of his head.

“He’s just really… protective of the other Delibird,” he continued, and the four other Delibird let out a squawking noise of united approval (or was it disapproval?) at his words.

“They’re fine, mostly,” he reassured the other. Although the mention of treasure—

“What treasure? Out here? In the caves?”

Now he was curious.
