It's not Lugia but Gavin who replies, sneering.

"So you blame me for something you started? Typical League."

He's not sure whether it's his sharp tongue or Melody's sudden shift in condition that earns the Cobalion's wrath, but when the Sword of Justice turns its gaze upon him Gavin's heart leaps into his throat.

It's Lugia's blessing that saves him; in a swirl of miasma, quickened reflexes register the cracking concrete and a burst of speed affords him a lunge to safety. He catches himself against Lugia's flank, but the shadowed legend isn't looking at him. He can feel her anger — not corrupt, but no less overwhelming — and knows her intention when her serpentine neck coils back as if to cry to the heavens.

"No," he says, sharp and pleading in equal measure. For once, she listens to him.

STRIKE AGAIN FOR MY VESSEL AND YOURS SHALL SUFFER FOR IT.

The bolt of THUNDER lances toward Cobalion, instead, the flash blinding.

"Next time, I won't stop her, Miro. Call off your Sword."

Where before he had seemed arrogant, smug, now Gavin radiates a cold fury as the miasma gathers around him anew.

No answer from either of them for a moment, it looked like she was struggling against some unseen force. [break][break]

But her body language was enough to tell Gavin that something was very wrong with her. "S-stop- C-Cant..Stop..him." she choked out as she was still fighting against her orders from earlier. But Cobalion was not listening to her, it used protect to defend against the thunder and once again lunged at Gavin with it's sword drawn, poised to strike at him again but with a stone edge that was delayed thanks to using protect so soon after.

This time, both Gavin and Lugia are prepared for the attack.

In a swirl of miasma, Gavin vaults aboard Lugia's back as she lurches skyward with a flap of her large, dark wings. Avatar and vessel narrowly avoid the vicious jutting stones, and this time Lugia targets Cobalion with her wrath.

Her wings cleave the air again, stirring the earlier gale into a violent HURRICANE.

"You make a terrible protector," Gavin sneers over the howl of wind. "You're putting her in more danger than I am!"

The gap in strength was growing more and more apparent with each agonizing moment that passed to Cobalion. He was so used to being one of the strongest pokemon around but he had finally met his match, no, someone stronger than him. This was too big of an obstacle for him to handle at the moment, he needed his fellow swords but they were with kyle lopez and MATIAS SILPH. [break][break]

Gavin's words cut deeper into him than any sword possibly could, leaving him stunned as he realized melody's emotions were feeding into him. The hurricane slams into cobalion and sends him flying back towards her side. Her body was convulsing uncontrollably as she still tried to make her way over to him and threw herself ontop of him "S-Stop. Cobalion. PLease" she begged him.[break][break]

The fellow trainer's words cut so deeply cause he knew that he was right, there was no way to win this anymore, especially not with Melody in this condition. Cobalion shakily stood up and stared at Lugia once more, using scary face again as he decided he had to leave now and attempted to flee with her in tow. [break][break]

Leaving behind a shiny object, the rhythm badge on the floor. To the victor goes the spoils or so they say.

When they attempt to flee, Gavin doesn't stop them.

In the aftermath, as the rain slows to a drizzle and the hurricane winds die down, Lugia lands on the gym's floor with an impact that shakes the ground beneath. An understanding passes between Gavin and the legend.

Rest. Get your strength back.

She was strong, but Cobalion's might hadn't been inconsiderable.

After a time, Gavin can feel her indignant rage morph into something corrupt, dangerous. A temporary effect, then. His head pounds as her fury threatens to overwhelm him, but he lets it wash over him and kneels down to pluck a shiny object off the floor. She'd dropped one of her badges in the escape, it seemed. He might've laughed if he weren't so drained.

He pockets it, instead, and sits down beneath the shade of Lugia's wings as she RECOVERS from the battle.
