A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

QUIET NIGHTS bring about a certain sense of peace. a tranquility that cannot be measured in metrics or numbers. it is a state of being: something so viscerally emotional that it offsets everything it knows about the world.

the world is a wonderful place—see it for yourself.

the creator’s voice still resonated inside. it feels so close. as if it were a part of them. out of reach but front and center as the core, the basis of what they are.

what they will become.

the sharp howl of an unknown pokemon runs nails against a chalkboard. hairless hills of grey, gelatinous skin rises against the surface of emaciated limbs. somber eyes glow with the psionic hues of apathy as the crackle of fire serves as a foreboding contrast.

fwsh!

it lands in front of the escaping deerling. cuts them off from the perpetrator of this whole ordeal. one of them is lifted against its will, suspended in a PSYCHIC aura.

“seek out—”

the voice penetrates the mind and soul. none will ‘hear’ it but the words are screaming within the thoughts of those present. it must be from this never before seen pokemon.

“—all pokemon.”

it turns, staring.

IT STARES DEEP into the soul. the blue rings around its pupils betray just how far they penetrate. they lack the probing nature of their creator. instead, they’re used to focus, intensify.

“human.”

the voice becomes more bearable with each passing word. the brain’s ability to adapt is akin to an analog radio, constantly adjusting the gear until the voice is clear but not overpowering. it still feel foreign but the jarring aspect fades.

“is this pokemon yours?”

psychic powers flicker around alpha’s body. as if to snatch it up in the same manner it had the deerling. however, the power has no traction against the pokemon’s midnight fur. its sinister affinity to darkness renders it immune: an exception to the rule.

MEWTWO’S TAIL SWISHES in contemplative thought. the fire continue to snap and crunch as it eats up their background. an unnerving silence answers toni’s claim.

“…”

the PSYCHIC hold eventually dissipates. the deerling lands on its knees, buckling underneath the gravity of its own weight. when the shock wears off, it scrambles to its feet, head jerking as it tries to flee.

“they reek of fear,” another voice narrates mewtwo’s thoughts. it’s feminine and sharp, assertive with a confidence that contrasts the question from before.

“but no matter… we only require one.”

“one of each?”

“one of each.”

voices alternate but the body remains still. it simply stares. as if thoughts convey everything it needs to.

“BECAUSE—”

its tail lashes out in a frenzy. it’s not directed at anyone in particular. it moves alien, as if sentient, thumping against the ground with growing intensity.

“because—”

a sound of confusion—hesitation?—sits at the end of each utterance. thoughts congregate with growing frustration until it finally answers.

“because—”

PSYCHIC PRESSURE radiates from the pokemon’s being. the ground trembles as it starts to exert some force. the same blue outline from earlier starts to manifest around toni’s houndoom. when it finds no purchase, unable to constraint the beast, mewtwo answers in full.

“because it is our destiny!”

a hieroglyphics of an eye radiates from mewtwo’s forehead. the MIRACLE EYE sees all. even darkness. for all shall know the mystical arts.

“because it is our purpose!”

one of the deerlings, a different one, finds itself bathed in mewtwo’s PSYCHIC hold. against its will, the pokemon is dragged closer, mewing as it claws at the ground with its hooves. such futility is ignored, causing the pokemon’s cry to become more desperate as it’s dragged forward.

alpha will find itself in the same scenario as mewtwo brings up its three fingered paw in concentration.

HER POKEMON is returned without fail. PSYCHIC may delve into the realm of telekinesis but the pokemon is still a pokemon by nature. the beckon of a red light steals it away into the safety of her device.

“i require all pokemon.”

the deerling is not as fortunate. the closer it gets the more desperate its cries. it has no idea what’s in store but the ominous slow crawl of being dragged away triggers every sense of self preservation. it bawls uncontrollably.

“all pokemon.”

pieces of mewtwo’s flesh starts to come off. it becomes goopy. there’s no meat or muscles, just a congregation of viscous flesh that congregates into a single, separate mass. not unlike a ditto.

and when enough of it gathers up it lurches out at the deerling. crawls along the pokemon’s fur until it swallows it whole. suffocating as visible portions of the pokemons body prod out from underneath this second skin.

only once the deerling is properly ‘bagged’ does the portion reunite with mewtwo. it joins at the pokemon’s abdomen, absorbed as they become one.

FOR A MOMENT, all becomes still. the deerling ceases to exist. it has been assimilated. and a moment later, its head peeks out from underneath mewtwo’s skin. right as the genetic pokemon’s body starts to open to spit out—or give birth—to the exact same pokemon.

it immediately collapses, breathing, but unconscious out of either shock of exhaustion. it’s too difficult to tell. however, what is noticeable is that the pokemon lacks any discernable wetness. for something that was seeming swallowed, it remains dry and free from bodily fluids.

the mewtwo remains in place, gaze concentrated on one of the houndooms still present.

“all pokemon.”

it flies off shortly after.
