Abandoned, decrepit, derelict. The outskirts of Slateport City had long since been left to the lower rungs of society, the neglected and forgotten gathered where no one could see them, in hopes of simply being left alone. Whether you’re simply an outcast looking for a relatively quiet life or a thug wishing to do crime without the law to get in the way, the outskirts were as good a place as any.

Odd, then, that Mòrag felt more at home here than anywhere else in Hoenn.

Walking through the narrow passages and streets of the outskirts, Mòrag made her way towards the agreed upon location to meet. Who was she meeting, you might ask? None other than an informant and her supervisor for this case, one Mathias Silph. While it did strike her as a bit odd that a soldier would be supervising her case, it did make some sense to her. After all, their goal wasn’t to train some rookie, it was to make sure she didn’t act out of line.

Stepping into an alleyway, Mòrag passed by a man asleep on the ground on top of some cardboard. Unbidden, a frown came upon her face, the operative reminded of why she had started her gang in Galar in the first place. The outskirts were a physical representation of the failures of the League, and she had yearned to give some place for the forsaken to live in peace in places the League was all too content to pretend didn’t exist. Now here she was, forced to work for them.

Tch. What an absolute farce.

Arriving at the spot, a tucked away little place between some abandoned buildings, Mòrag leaned onto a wall, waiting for the other two to arrive. She just hoped she could get this over with as soon as possible.

It certainly didn’t take Matias long to arrive, did it? Looking up from the ground, Mòrag would come off the wall and step towards him. Looking at his hand for just a moment, she’d then reciprocate the handshake. Though she smiled, it wasn’t an entirely pleasant one.

“Captain Silph.” She greeted him, her intent on keeping distance rather obvious from her tone, “Don’t worry, I know all the details.”

Mòrag was happy to keep the silence after that brief exchange, waiting for the informant to arrive. Though, they did not have to wait for long, for the informant arrived within a handful of minutes. A short, stocky, and remarkably unassuming man, he appeared to play the part of a person in the background quite well.

“Captain.” The man nodded in respect to Matias. While standard protocol would be a salute, that would be quite unwise here. Looking around to make sure they weren’t being watched, he would speak.

“We’ve made an effort to keep tabs on criminal activity that may threaten the League, Team Rocket or otherwise. Unfortunately, Team Rocket itself seems out of reach for the moment. We have, however, found a group making dealings with them.”

“I presume we’re to use this group as a way to get more information on Team Rocket?” Came the question from Mòrag, although she seemed rather disinterested in the whole prospect.

“Right. They’re small, but apt at manipulating the political landscape of the criminal underworld. Their leader goes by the alias Thomas Skarn, but we’ve managed to find out his real name, Samuell Bryn.”

“… What?”

The moment the informant said his true name, Mòrag’s expression switched from professional disinterest to utter shock. Stepping forward, she’d lean in with narrowed eyes.

“You’re absolutely sure?” She asked firmly.

“Y-Yes, I’m quite sure. Why do you ask?”

“Hmm.” Mòrag took a step back, frown on her face, evidently deep in thought… then she turned to Matias with a smile.

“You’re in luck, Captain. I’ve suddenly developed a great interest in this case, so you won’t have to wrangle me into doing more work than I want to.”

“Ahem.” The informant cleared his throat, “They intend to meet with another group in a few hours. We don’t know the precise location of their base, but we do know the route they generally take. That said, we don’t predict that many people will show up, so if you want a two for one, that’s also an option.”

“Hmm…” Mòrag put a hand on her chin before shooting a sideways look at Matias, “What say you, o Captain? I’ve my own thoughts on what we should do, but they really don’t matter if you don’t agree, do they?”

the information shows up, does the rundown, and that should've been the end of it. but then comes the twist; the reveal that this may not just be any other regular case.[break][break]

Hmm? What’s this? While Mòrag’s formality obviously did not come from a place of genuine respect, she was nonetheless surprised to hear Captain Silph asking her to call him anything but just that. Did he simply dislike that kind of decorum, or did he take issue with his last name?

She could empathise either way.

“Hmmhmm. Very well, Captain.” Anything but his first name. That sort of familiarity was something she very much wanted to avoid.

A thought occurred. With him all in her business now, how could she possibly dodge the inevitable questions to come? Being vague would only get her so far, and if he ordered her to, she was technically obligated to reveal the information as it held some relation to their current mission.

“For fuck’s sake.” She thought, internally sighing.

Brushing aside her inner woes for now, she maintained her smile, exposing her unusually sharp canines.

“Hmmhmm. Well, if I know this, uh… person as well as I think I do, taking him won’t be a simple task. I’d prefer to gamble on taking on the other party, and taking their place in this meeting of theirs. We fight them separately, diminishing the risk and causing less of a ruckus, and let them come to us after we clean up the rubbish. A sound strategy, no?”

Well, that was certainly surprising. She was used to having her employers micromanage her every move, even when unnecessary. She assumed it was due to fear that she would act out in some manner, but it honestly just made things a lot more difficult than they needed to be. Then again, this man was a soldier, someone who had seen war with his own eyes. He likely had equal distaste for that nonsense that she did.

A breath of fresh air, regardless of his reasoning.

But of course, came the question: how did she know this man? Mòrag internally winced, taking a moment to think on how to best respond. She supposed her cover would have been blown eventually, might as well be now.

“Hmmhmm. That’s rather an inconvenient question, Captain.” She responded to him, smile diminishing for the first time. She paused a bit, as if considering whether or not she wanted to answer, before eventually sighing and relenting, her smile now fully gone.

“He was part of my old gang.” She began, a sombre undertone to my voice, “Most of us died, but few people disappeared when… that unfortunate event happened. I’ve been searching for those who disappeared for a while now, so I was quite surprised to hear one of their names again.”

Mòrag frowned, looking away.

“We were led into a trap by one of our own. I don’t know if Sammy was the one responsible, but… I intend to find out.”

Mòrag blinked, for the first time expressing her surprise on her face, subtly as it may have been. Matias, so far, had not been at all like she was expecting him to be. So much so that she had to take a moment to come up with another quip. Getting back her subtle smirk, she’d speak.

“Well, I’ll be sure to use the full extent of the freedom you’ve granted me, captain. I do hope you don’t come to regret your decision.” She winked at him with a grin.

“Ahem.” The informant once more cleared his throat, “If you’re going to be facing one of the parties at the location of the meeting, I should give you the necessary directions. Coming out of this alleyway, you’ll turn right and walk past an old ramen shop with a red sign and dip into a left alley, which is a shortcut to an abandoned warehouse. There is a smaller building to its left which used to be used as a break room, which is where they’ll meet.”

Mòrag nodded at him, “Thank you for the information. Well, captain, shall we?”

With Matias' affirmation, Mòrag would move out, and the informant would quickly leave in the opposite direction. The walk itself wasn’t too long, and the ramen shop the informant mentioned would soon be in sight. If the people around them thought them suspicious, they chose not to comment, mostly just keeping to themselves as was common in these parts. Entering the alleyway next to the abandoned ramen shop, they would pass through a rather cramped passage before coming up on what was most certainly the abandoned warehouse mentioned.

The fence had long since had a hole torn open in it, and the duo would be able to pass through it rather easily, coming into sight with the break room.

“Hmm… we are rather early. Perhaps we should discuss tactics, captain?” Mòrag piped up, scanning the area for a good hiding spot. Being an urban rat used to these sorts of conditions, she had built up a natural instinct for that.

“Of course if you’d like to go in there, Pokémon blazing, that’s fine by me. I’m sure we could defeat whatever petty criminal we came across. That said, it would be prudent to have something ready if we come across an… unexpected difficulty.”

there are a few options, all of which end the same way in his head, it's just about which path they'd take to get there. and normally, he'd have suggested a few, but due to their precarious situation and dynamic, curiosity trumps.[break][break]

Once more, the captain had deferred to her for decision-making. Crossing her arms, she would quip with a smirk that covered her bitterness in a thin veil.

“Once more shaking the jar of the captive insect to see what it’ll do, hmm? Very well.”

Putting a hand on her chin, she would take a few moments to run through the possibilities in her mind, considering the location, her pokémon, and who they were facing. After a few moments, she snapped her fingers, having come up with a plan.

“I find that the best way to ensure victory is to make it so we don’t need to battle at all. They’ll be waiting in an enclosed space, and I happen to have a Salazzle in my care.” She said, with a growing smirk, “She can release her toxins into the room and poison everyone inside. Not enough to kill them, mind you. Isabella has rather stellar control over the intensity of the toxins she releases. However, if we convince them that they’ll die within the hour if they don’t seek medical attention, they’ll be much more interested in ensuring their survival than they will be in battling us.”

A suitably pragmatic plan for someone who often had to make do with fighting at a disadvantage. Mòrag was not afraid to play dirty and attack humans, but of course, she was already expecting this plan to be rejected. What good and proper League member would accept harming humans, after all?

“Ah, hmm. That’s certainly a detail we need to consider, isn’t it? Hmm…” Mòrag, put a hand on her chin, furrowing her brow as she tried to come up with something. A few moments later, she would ask Matias.

“You wouldn’t happen to have any pokémon that could put them to sleep, do you? Isabella can poison them, but she doesn’t really have the ability to put them to sleep, although… Salandits and Salazzles are capable of using their toxins to control males of all species, and that includes us humans. If we’re lucky and they’re all men, we could simply tell them to sit tight and not make a fuss.” Pausing, she’d sigh and cross her arms, “But that’s if we’re lucky. In any case, even if there’s a woman or two coming along, automatically taking part of our foes out of the fight is certainly advantageous, and if they’re all women… well, we’ll just have to fight them all. I’m sure we’ll win.”
