It was easy to get distracted with their toes in the sand, but CJ was determined to remained focused at the task at hand. All along the beach, markers had been set up at the location of Tirtouga nests, and very soon, under the low hanging evening moon, little baby Tirtouga would begin bursting through their shells and crawling through the sand to the sea, on their way to freedom. [break][break]

Standing by was their trusty Jolteon, Kinnick, with Agate, the Joltik, attached comfortably to her back. Together, the three of them stood guard over a long stretch of beach, hoping to helpand guide the little Tirtouga to the sea, whilst protecting them from the vicious and hungry birds which, already, were flocking overhead. Wingull, Pelipper, Taillow, Pidgey, and Corvisquire lurked nearby, tuned into what could possibly be an all you could eat buffet by an internal, instinctual clock. [break][break]

But it was not just the sky which heralded hazards for the new brood. Lurking in the shadows of the brush were Furret, Yungoos, Gumshoos, Nickit, Ekans, Zangoose, and Seviper, hoping to make a tasty meal out of baby turtles and even unhatched eggs. Closer to the water, Crabby, Corphish, Kingler, and other crustaceans were prepared to jump on the hapless newborns and munch the flesh off their bones. [break][break]

With all variables added in, it was quite the daunting task. Which is why CJ was glad to have a partner in crime-- or, in this case, a partner in safety. “Yo!” They said, raising a hand in greeting to their compatriot. They were wearing a loose white T-shirt over a full-body wetsuit, Ranger standard. The wetsuit, not the T-shirt. “You ready to save some baby turtles?” [break][break]

When Adriana had gotten the call from CJ that they needed help, she’d hopped on Fluyt the Swampert and sped over to Dewford. She’d like to enjoy the sun on her back, but she needed to reach them as soon as possible so she was able to help out. Who knows what kind of mess he’d found himself in this time? [break]

She hops off on the beach, Fluyt staying beside her as she walks up the beach, stepping around the frothing Kingler staring up towards CJ. She sees him wave and yell out as she approaches. Of course. [break]

She waves back, smiling at his eagerness to save the turtles. She honestly should’ve expected something like this, but her duty to protect the oceans and everything in it included these little turtles. The baby Tirtouga were cute after all, and she definitely doesn’t mind helping them out. [break]

“Alright! We just got this one group here or are there more Tirtouga down the beach?” [break]

A Gumshoos jumps out of the brush and Adriana tosses the other ball on her belt, releasing Schooner the Vaporeon. The Vaporeon instantly locks onto its target, firing off a Hydro Pump that sends Gumshoos flying back into the brush. Adriana winces, thinking it might’ve been too much, but she’ll be able to check on it once the babies have made it safely to water. For now, she’ll turn down the power. [break]

“Let’s get these little ones to safety! And be careful, don’t wanna hurt any of the other Pokemon too bad!”

Adriana Delmar came up the beach with her Pokemon at her side. She always went everywhere on her Swampert, putzing around like a slimy, blue Vespa. She gave CJ a warm, if slightly exasperated smile, like she was already tired and they hadn’t even started. Yeah, CJ had that effect on people, sometimes. [break][break]

“So there’s four nests here, and then four or five down the beach,” CJ explained, standing next to her and looking across the stretch of sand. The perimeter of the nests had been marked at four corners with red flags on thin wires. [break][break]

As Adriana and her Vaporeon deal with the Gumshoos, the sand over the nests closest to them begins to bubble and shift. Little flutes of sand go flying into the air as the baby Tirtouga push their heads to the surface and churn the grit with their flippers. An observant Wingull descends to the beach for a closer look-- but not before Kinnick drops a fierce bolt of thunder on it, knocking it out cold. The seagull’s fainted body drops to the sand, white feathers turned black and smoldering.

CJ shoots Adriana a sheepish look. “Oops,” they say, rubbing a hand through their hair. “Uh, maybe easy on the zappy-zaps, bud,” CJ says to their Jolteon. “We wouldn’t want any… collateral damage.”

Kinnick gives a dissatisfied hiss, but Agate jumps off her back and skitters closer to one nest. [break][break]

Two baby Tirtouga have emerged and begin their flight towards the water, flailing fins pulling themselves forward in the sand. [break][break]

“Got it!” Adriana looks down the beach, noting where the other flagged spots are. Luckily for the pair of them, the wild predator Pokemon seem to be converged on their location, desperate to drive out the intruding Rangers so they can feast on the baby turtles in peace. [break]

But Adriana’s not gonna let them get away with it that easily. She watches CJ roast a Wingull, holding her breath until she sees it move a little, before turning back to the land Pokemon slowly growing closer again. She’d bring up the Wingull, but given she launched a Gumshoos half a mile away she thought it best to hold her tongue.[break]

She thinks. How to get the Pokemon in the brush away? She could soak them with a Surf, but she didn’t want to push the Tirtouga further inland with the wave that would inevitably cause… A more delicate solution is needed. [break]

“Fluyt! We gotta get them to forget!” She says, covering her ears. “CJ! Might wanna put in earplugs!” The Swampert opens its mouth and lets out a Supersonic into the brush at the edge of the beach, confusing the wild Pokemon there and making most forget about the eggs in front of them. The babies crawl a little closer to the ocean, but Adriana can’t look for long. More Pokemon are coming.

The presence of the two rangers is like a beacon to the incoming wild predators, who seem to have realized the humans and their Pokemon counterparts are going to be the ultimate spoiler to their succulent baby turtle meal. CJ imagined there was something to be said about the ecology of wild Pokemon and the interference of humans on the natural world, but they’d worry more about that when there weren’t tiny lives at stake.

CJ exchanges a pained glance with Adriana as the Wingull Kinnick zapified twitches a little, hinting at what little life was still retained in its hollow bones. CJ releases a breath they weren’t sure they were holding, very grateful Adriana didn’t just watch them kill something; especially not when CJ had been the healer on their Ranger team.

Oh, Mt. Pyre; the thought makes CJ suck in a sharp breath. They’re about to ask Adriana how Schooner’s tail is healing up when she warns them they may want to plug their ears; they slam their palms over their ears and count to ten as Fluyt hits the encroaching Pokemon hiding in the brush at the corner of the beach with supersonic-- the very shrill bits that CJ can still hear cause their ears to ring.

“Good idea!” they say when they can hear again. Nearby, Agate is skittering up and down the beach in excitement, from the line of the waves to the nests, waiting for the little Tirtouga to make their way to the water’s edge.

There’s a shrill shriek from the air as a group of about four Corvisquire are coming in hot, unwilling to back down from their seafood dinner.
