The day is gorgeous and warm - Cefin can feel the arrival of spring in the warmth of the water and the rays of the sun as he balances himself cross-legged on-top of his surfing Mantine. Though he'd had various experiences in the habitats of wild pokémon, wide-open water like this was the one he had experienced least, so it had a certain air of excitement to it.[break][break]

He waits for his partner for the day to arrive, and busies himself with watching a small collection of Corsola catch up to the bigger group. Any migration was a miracle to behold, but the fact that these little pink anthozoans were so darn cute really helped their case.[break][break]

The sun-warmed salt water laps at CJ’s knees as they fish through their bag of League-provided gear. Sand squishes in between their toes. Nearby, Nico the Golduck is waiting, impatient, tapping one webbed foot with her arms crossed; deeper out to sea, where the beach-head drops away and the ocean opens beneath them, Iman flips and curls through the water; every now and again, her cornflower-yellow dorsal fin slices the water’s surface, letting CJ know she is also waiting. [break][break]

“I’m just trying to find my-- there they are, my goggles.” CJ snaps on the League-issued snorkeling goggles and slips the circular rebreather into their mouth. They don’t have a Pokemon with Dive or Surf, so technology is going to have to fill in the gaps, here. “Okay, okay, let’s go,” they say, voice muffled through the O2 mask, trudging through the sea and diving gracelessly off the deep-end. Nico rolls her eyes and gives a petulant quack before she follows suit. [break][break]

Even in CJ’s fancy dive suit, Nico easily overtakes her trainer. CJ grasps the Golduck’s webbed hand, and she drags them through the sea, heading out to their destination: the Corsola colony, making their way south into deeper, warmer waters for the summer. [break][break]

They spot their associate for the mission, biologist Cefin Glynn ; Nico pulls to a stop in front of the fair-haired man’s surfing Mantine, and CJ pops their head out of the water. [break][break]

“Hi, Professor Glynn,” CJ says, cheery and only slightly garbled through their mask. “It’s an honor to meet you. My name’s CJ. I’ll be helping out with the Corsola today.” [break][break]

His partner for the mission swims up, and Cefin chuckles a little - sat back, perfectly dry on his Mantine's back, it makes him seem quite unadventurous in comparison. He offers them a smile and a little wave, and Cornflower coos a welcome, too.[break][break]

"CJ, it's lovely to meet you as well. Though please- call me Cefin! We're not in class, there's no need for all that formality."[break][break]

Two gentle pats on Cornflower's back and she unbeaches herself, floating calmly on the ocean's waves and keeping her trainer perfectly dry. For now, at least... though Cefin wasn't afraid of getting wet - if the worst came to the worst, he could swim and simply hold onto her instead.[break][break]

"Do you study at Lilycove, CJ?" He asks, as they head closer to the travelling reef of Corsola who journeyed southwards, their instincts carrying them towards warmth. Gwynedd followed behind, his wings fluttering gently in the sea breeze.

Cefin cuts a striking figure shaded against the bright sun atop his Mantine. His hair is spun gold, his skin only slightly reddened from the beaming rays. CJ thinks maybe that was what made them and Cefin different-- obviously, the biologist had the forethought to bring a Pokemon with Surf. CJ just had their Golduck to tugboat them around. [break][break]

It felt odd to drop the honorific before Cefin’s name. CJ felt like their own experience paled in comparison-- a handful of biology classes under their belt vs. an actual, practiced lecturer. Nico’s smooth, webbed hand wrapped around their wrist and tugged them along, keeping a gentle pace with Cornflower. “I’ve taken a few classes,” CJ said, feeling a bit sheepish at the lack of dedication to their studies. “I’ve been helping the League Rangers out a lot recently. ‘S kept me busy.” [break][break]

They ducked their goggled head beneath the shimmering waves and beamed at all the little pink Corsola making their way along in the warm currents. Iman had made a wide loop and was coming back around for them. [break][break]

CJ squinted. The ocean behind their Eelektrik and the group of Corsola was beginning to darken-- as if something large was coming their way. Suddenly, they felt very exposed in the water, and Nico’s firm grip was more like a ball and chain dragging them downwards. [break][break]

Maybe this was why Jeannie was so afraid of it, they thought, a mixture of fear and guilt churning their stomach to nausea. [break][break]

The gentle blush that has settled upon Cefin's cheeks and nose comes from the sunrays, giving him a slightly flushed look in the brightness of the midday sun. It made him smile to see CJ's reaction when he told them there was no need to call him professor or doctor or anything of the like. They were equals here, after all, working together. He didn't want CJ to feel like they had anything to prove.[break][break]

"Ah, of course! That's exciting. Work out in the field is much more important than labwork and classes. Though don't tell anyone I told you as much" He chuckles, letting one of his hands gently touch the surface of the water as they continued to travel with the school of Corsola.[break][break]

Things turn from peacefully quiet, to suspiciously so. At the other side of the group, just as CJ did, Cefin notices a darkness forming, barely visible from the surface. Something was heading towards the group, likely a predator, and Cefin didn't want to wait around only to find out too late.[break][break]

He throws the pokéball at his side out, releasing his Vivillon to the fresh sea air where it fluttered just above the waves. "Gwynedd, be ready in case you need to supersonic"[break][break]

Cefin isn't quite sure how well CJ can hear him whilst they're beneath the waves, but he calls down nonetheless.[break][break]

"Can you see anything down there, CJ?"

Cefin’s voice is a warped burble, audible from beneath the waves, but not necessarily coherent. Still, CJ gets the gist; they jerk their arm back and point upwards when Nico looks; a moment later and they’re tossing their waterlogged braid skyward as they break the surface. “Something big down here,” CJ confirms. [break][break]

Almost simultaneously, a sharp blue fin, like a notched blade, sliced into the air. CJ swallowed hard, face going pale. They suddenly felt very, very vulnerable. Nico made a disgusted quack and dove beneath the waves to meet the attacker head on. Likely, Iman was doing the same; but as they watched, the first fin disappeared, and more began to rise-- three, four, five. [break][break]

“I don’t suppose there’s any room up there with you?” CJ said, unable to keep the terror out of their voice.

A single fin juts up into the air, cutting through the surf like a knife. Cornflower shifts her weight a little, uncomfortable by the predator's presence, but a soft pat from Cefin is enough to calm her. Just one, after all... a single Sharpedo? Easy enough to deal with, between the two of them.[break][break]

He goes to call for Gwynedd, only for CJ to surface and, behind them, more fins rise. Up to five, then, all at once - a darting march towards the relocating Corsola. "Oh, Arceus..." slips out.[break][break]

"CJ, stay close, if you can - Sharpedo rarely go for humans specifically, but they may get you mixed up with a pokémon" - was that particularly comforting? To Cefin it might have been, but he'd studied Sharpedo in the past. Hopefully CJ knew enough about the brutal pokémon to quell their own fears.[break][break]

"If we can distract them long enough for the Corsola to move on, we should be fine" Sharpedo could swim fast, but their stamina was their biggest weakness. If the swarming corals got far enough for the herd of Sharpedo to see the chase as not worth it, they should be fine. As for now... they had to put in a little work.[break][break]

"Gwyn, poison powder"[break][break]

The Vivillon coats the waters between them and the oncoming swarm with thick flakes of poison, sticking to the surf and froth like dandruff.
