his words sounded almost scripted, as if he had said them once before if not countless other times.

a few taps of the spoon onto the glass and he’d pull to mixture up to his lips, setting it down with a slight lick where the cup had made contact.

despite his clipped tone, his willingness to personally donate to her city caused her to visibly brighten. her green-eyed gaze snapped up to meet his own, the grin she bore broad.

"thank you, sir! i - "

she released a little laugh and shook her head.

" - i hate that i have to beg for assistance," she remarked. "but i'd rather beg than fail my city - as strange as that might sound."

the young woman would lose far too much if she couldn't manage in defending her own city, after all.

"i'm in your debt," she said. "i don't know how i'll ever be able to repay you for this kindness."

cait found the strength to meet his eyes again, once again noting that the councilman was profoundly difficult to read.

her words of thanks were quickly pushed off, a waving hand dismissing any further praise of his actions.

“kay, this is my job, if you need anything for your city i’m more than happy to oblige; the only thing you need to do as thanks is take care of your people where i cannot. you’re in your position for a reason.”

a finger would trace the rim of his cup, head tilting idly as he pressed for further request.

“anything else you need? i’m sure to have a lot of backed up request on my plate after this and i want to take care of them before anything gets out of hand.”

she nodded in understanding, deciding against commenting on his desire to leave as early as reasonably possible.

"you're free to take your leave if you must," she said. "i'm sure you're very busy and i'd hate to take up too much of your time."

cait took a dainty sip of her cooling drink, her smile one of ease as she relaxed further within her cushioned seat. after he had offered his assistance without asking for anything in exchange, her lips had trembled lightly as a delighted glimmer surfaced within her green-eyed gaze. she smothered it, hopeful that he hadn't glimpsed the look upon her face.

'and with no strings attached, either. what luck.'

"i'll be emailing you shortly," she continues. "i hope you have a lovely day, kim."

he’d pick the teddiursa up, finishing his tea and setting the now empty cup onto its platter gently as he wandered out of the shop.

“try and keep a straight face until i leave next time.”

he’d whisper in passing, his smile knowing as he continued forward.

she should know just as well as him that any favor, especially one as big as this, would not go without a favor being given back. she was in his debt until he freed her of it.

though it’s a shame she couldn’t be trusted, it was cute the way she tried to deceive him.

cait stilled, a look of panic flitting across her features as she very nearly dropped her cup. she forcibly schooled her features as he took his leave, the young woman fearful that he'd otherwise glance over his broad shoulder at her weary expression.

'damn it. i ruined it.'

her hand shook and she'd berate herself for allowing her facade to slip in that crucial moment.

'i'll get my money,' she thought.

she set down the delicate piece of ceramic and eyed her meal. despite how good it appeared she couldn't find it in herself to polish off the remainder of it.
