Anxiety is a funny thing. When it came to challengers to his gym, Xander couldn't get it to leave him alone. It gnawed at him, had him questioning every decision he made during those battles. But now, stepping into the Slateport Gym, his nerves are tamed, fed. [break][break]

A good sign? A bad one? He couldn't tell. All he knows is he has to make a good impression. Katherine Fairburne will be watching, judging him like Xander judged himself. [break][break]

Swallowing a stale breath, he made his way to the room for his challenge. FERNANDO SILPH was already there waiting for him. "Hello, Mr. Silph. It's a pleasure to see you again." Allies the first time they'd met, host and guest the second, and now they were adversaries. [break][break]

xander is correct. fernando rarely makes an appearance for challenges. he may be present, in the actual building, but that doesn’t guarantee he’ll make time to host the challenge. why would he when a machine is more than apt to test most trainers?

the exception to the rule are people that gauge his interest. with the title of gym leader, xander finds himself sorted neatly into that category, affiliation notwithstanding.

“but someone requested that i personally see to your challenge.”

the implication should be obvious. his connection to Katherine Fairburne is still a mystery. how much does fernando know about them? it’s hard to say.

like always, he speaks in riddles. vague but purposeful.

“i expect great things from you, mister belmont,” he smiles, pulling two pokeballs off his belt, one in each hand.

Hardening his features, Xander pulled his Poke Balls from his jacket. The twin spheres might as well have been iron wrought with how heavy they felt. "That makes two of us." and he refused to disappoint. [break][break]

"3..." he muttered, stepping back.[break][break]

"2..." Adrenaline spiked in his veins as Xander readied his Poke Balls.[break][break]

"1..." [break][break]

"Let it rip."[break][break]

The spheres flew from his hand and into the air. With a flash of red, the Pokemon inside took center stage. Greninja and Absol, a contrasting duo of black and white. [break][break]

Both Pokemon stared ahead, awaiting their opponents.

POKEBALLS EXCHANGE HANDS as fernando’s pokemon populate the battlefield. it should come as no surprise when his choice is revealed: an aegislash and golurk.

“battle routine set!”

the aegislash uncoils both arms, shield raised, proper and steady. the golurk barely moves, only posing one foot forward in anticipation of a wide gait.

“execute!”

They couldn't allow Aegislash to defend. Absol bound ahead, the red TAUNTing glow of his eyes locked on the sword. [break][break]

Golurk was a problem all its own. A towering mountain of a Pokemon, Xander prayed Greninja's speed proved too much for it to handle. [break][break]

Spinning water in his hand, the ninja circled the goliath at a breakneck pace. Water Shuriken flew from every direction. Weak on their own, the sheer number attempted to chip away at Gorlurk's stamina.

DESPITE BEING THE MOST POPULAR challenge at the slateport gym, the SWORD AND SHIELD challenge is rarely tackled with an actual strategy. it should come as no surprise that Katherine Fairburne’s representative is one of the few to come prepared. the showing of an opening TAUNT shows a deep understanding of pokemon and their unique powers.

“very good,” fernando praises, none too concerned aobut the ramification of such a move.

unable to adopt their primary stance, the aegislash immediately hurls itself head-on against the absol. the sheen of its blade glimmers as it twirls forward with a SACRED SWORD.

likewise, the golurk approaches the much faster greninja. several WATER SHURIKENS land but they seen phase through nothingness as the pokemon disappears into a PHANTOM FORCE.

Despite hearing Fernando's praise, the redhead doesn't respond. This battle is too crucial for Xander to lose focus. The slightest slip-up, and it's all over. [break][break]

"Riku, defend now!"[break][break]

The Absol's posture shifts. His hindlegs scoot backward along the ground as his senses expand to DETECT the incoming strike. He leaps, deflecting the SACRED SWORD off his horn with a splash of sparks. [break][break]

"Night Slash! the order comes quickly, and so does the attack. Shadows sharpen Absol's horn to a deadly edge, and he spins around to strike Aegislash from behind.[break][break]

Xander's prepared for the Phantom Force. "Substitute, Zephos." When the Golurk reappears, it'll strike nothing but a toy. The best part? Due to PROTEAN, Greninja's typing shifts to Normal, rendering ghost attacks useless.
