There’s nothing unfamiliar about the north wing of Team Rocket’s headquarters, for it’s just about every single day that the admin makes his way there in order to reach his own office. Those of most other admins are often visited as well, and even those belonging to the underbosses (or.. well… more like underboss, singular, these days). But, the door that ominously awaits at the end of this long hallway? Admittedly, that one is one which Mars rarely finds himself having a need to knock upon.

Today is one of those rare days, though.

Eyes of dark gold hues meet those of all too similar shades when he turns to look at Cillian Quinn, an eyebrow being just so slightly raised. The underboss had been the one who suggested he should come along for this meeting, after all, and hierarchy is hierarchy – his is the first step. That much Mars can respect, perhaps out of trust more than anything.

Trust also in the fact that Gavin is much more used to dealing with the enigma wrapped in a mystery that is Rocket’s leader.

A placid countenance reveals nothing of the usual anxieties suffered when Gavin must meet with the boss. Walsh has given him no true cause for them, but the ghosts of Kanto twist vines around his chest and pull taut. At least they're not here to report failure, only information.

His golden gaze flicks to Martín del Mar, and he inclines his head.

He'd let Walsh know to expect them, so gives only a cursory knock upon the door before opening it and stepping inside. His attention is drawn, as always, to the shadows before it seeks the man.

"Sir. Admin Del Mar and I wished to report on some, ah... troubling information."

An apologetic lilt to his voice. Ordinarily he'd write a report for these things, but these grave tidings seemed best conveyed in person.

He gestures to Mars, a silent indication for him to take the lead.

THE BOSS ALLOWS THEM IN. Again, the shadows open the door before dispersing into the recesses of the room. He sets his pen down. Nearby, a Chatot observes quietly on a small wooden perch.

Shadows retreat into the office just as they step in, and Mars finds himself watching them before his gaze falls upon the man that awaits them. Declan Walsh. The leader of Team Rocket’s Hoennian branch. A man about whom too little is known for him to place his entire trust.

Still, Walsh has also never done anything for Mars not to trust him, has he?

Fluorescent lights flicker on and off. Sirens ring. The sound of metal floors clanging in unison echo as several dozen footsteps march away. Only the last one can be perceived.

A head full of purple hair disappears around the corner.

Vividly, the vision comes to mind as if a fresh memory when looking at the Rocket boss, as if his ever-paranoid subconscious’ attempt at giving him an answer. Could that really have been Walsh? And, if it had been, what does that mean?

Mars’ expression doesn’t betray him, and not even a glimpse of the turmoil of his mind is displayed.

”We believe it is, sir.” Respect. Deference. Despite all of his doubts, those things are not faked. It was long ago that Mars was taught to respect the chain of command of syndicates like these – it’s ingrained into his very being. ”It’s about the Tree of Life. Recently, myself and a few others received warnings from the Lake Guardians – Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie. They spoke of something called ‘The Darkest Day’.”

It’s at this point that Mars pauses in case any questions are to be raised, his gaze remaining fixed on the man before him.

In the pause between Mars' explanation and whatever answer Walsh might give, Gavin adds, "Del Mar isn't the only one to bring these concerns to me; I heard it from Eris Halla, as well, though her memories weren't as clear."

Those findings he'd detailed in a report.

But as he hadn't been one of those few chosen by the Lake Trio to receive such doomsday visions, he falls quiet and allows the admin and his boss to continue unimpeded.

THE ROCKET BOSS REMAINS SET IN HIS STOICISM. No inclination of familiarity lights his face. No recognition manifests within his shape.

"the darkest day? and they have warned you about it?" walsh asks, his voice a low sweep under shadow. "what do you two make of it, then?"

he pauses, hearing Eris Halla' name under merlino's tongue.

"and is it only rocket that knows of this?"

”No.” The answer comes swiftly and with no hesitation, for this is a report and there’s no point in hiding such information. Mars’ tone remains neutral for now; calm, even. ”There were civilians and League officials among those chosen by the Lake Trio. During this last encounter, the Rocket members present were Serena Malcolm, Summer Atreides, priam conrad, and as mentioned, Eris Halla. Three civilians were present; Locke Jamison, Hideo Kino, and maverick noah ryder, a former gym leader… Katherine Fairburne was also there, she had been visited by Azelf.”

Katherine who had betrayed Rocket’s trust.

But, this isn’t just about Rocket, is it? It’s about the fate of all of Hoenn, and it’s with that in mind that Mars continues his report after a short pause in order to allow what had just been said to be properly acknowledged. There’s a part of him that wants to just get to the more pressing matters, to discuss the dangers that they may soon face, but he knows well that in order for Walsh to understand why such a group of people would gather, some background information is needed:

”The first warnings came a few months ago. Each Lake Guardian visited select individuals, bestowing strange gifts upon them. Those visited by Azelf were given prophecies and words that lingered in their minds whenever heard. Those visited by Mesprit and Uxie were given charms with symbols only they could see – some of them forgot about their encounter with a guardian, while others could not speak of it. It made putting all this together rather… difficult.” He sighs then. No matter how many times Mars tells others of all this, it never sounds any less convoluted, and it always leaves him wondering why the guardians would make them all forget. There are too many questions that are yet to be answered.

”When a charm given by Mesprit interacted with one given by Uxie, they activated, allowing all those the Lake Guardians visited to see letters on each of them. Unfortunately, the messages and events from those encounters would be forgotten once those involved parted ways. Until recently, that is… I had one such encounter months ago with Eris Halla and Locke Jamison, and during it we shared a vision we had, until now, forgotten about. In it, a monstrous creature attacked the Tree of Life, and now, thanks to the things said to us by the Guardians, I believe it might be The Darkest Day…”

It’s then, and only then, that discomfort shows itself in Mars’ expression. It’s only for a short moment, but it makes it all too clear that the memory unsettles him.

”In the vision, it killed Yveltal, and I’m pretty sure it would have done the same to us if Azelf hadn’t intervened… Four of our pokémon died that day. Psychic exhaustion, I believe.”

What do you two make of it?

Gavin hadn't witnessed the events firsthand, but this question is easy enough to answer.

"I find it troubling, if these visions hold any truth — and I believe they could. A monstrous creature attacking the Tree of Life could allude to the snake that we fought against on the canopy." Walsh hadn't been there after staying behind to assist other Rockets, but there had been plenty present to tell him about what had happened. "Given that Adrian Malcolm is Yveltal's avatar, I'm concerned about the rest of that vision."

LAKE REPORT

GAVIN X MARS X WALSH

THE ACCOUNT CARVES CONCERN into Walsh's face. Although this may all be fiction, a prophecy woven by Pokemon immemorial is not to be taken lightly. Still, the cryptic nature of their verses and the ambiguity of its figures hang in nondescript shapes like phantoms.

"then we will fortify the tree with more of us and our pokemon. expand the perimeter of trespass by another thirty feet. scouts can be stationed atop of the tree." The Rocket Boss states quickly. Deliberately. "ensure that Adrian Malcolm and his patron are offered our best protective services."

However, the drastic measures of mortals do little in the face of stubborn fate. While Hoenn's people shines bright with the miraculous light of crystablooms and illumination, others, like The Hatchery owner, close their doors. Board their windows. Hide away like Darkrai in the night.

In the end, what else can they do?

The commands given by the Rocket boss are accepted and acknowledged with a nod of agreement, even if said agreement may not be particularly needed. Guard the Tree of Life, guard Adrian Malcolm and Yveltal, watch out for any possible danger. It’s all they can do, Mars had known as much from the beginning. At least Walsh knows now. At least he seems to be considering the possibility of this being a serious threat. Shouldn’t that be reassuring? Shouldn’t it bring him some peace of mind?

”Thank you, I believe those are the best measures we can take at the moment. The Guardias’ latest prophecy… It spoke of there being two of the ‘Darkest Day’ active. One that will steal the foundation of life and one that will kill the apparition of death.”

The Tree of Life and Yveltal. Or, is it Xerneas and Yveltal? Either way, the prophecy aligns with the vision from back in September, and that is all too concerning.

It's then that there’s another sigh, Mars' gaze meeting that of his superior. ”Sir, you should probably also know that I spoke to Remiel Calcifet about the Darkest Day, since we saw mention of it attacking Galar in one of our visions. Calcifet claims that it already attacked their region once before, centuries ago, and that it’s believed to be extraterrestrial or extradimensional in nature.”

Nothing surprising about the latter, considering the horrors that have attacked Hoenn from other dimensions, but an extraterrestrial threat? If that truly is what the Darkest Day is, then the fact that there’s a meteor headed for Hoenn suddenly seems even more concerning…

Speculation based on the words Azelf had given those it had visited. Speculation that leads Mars to glance at the shadows in the room from the corner of his eye – full of distrust.

Orders are a language Gavin speaks well; the tension in his stoic expression alleviated ever-so-slightly as he nods in response to Walsh's commands.

"I'll see it done."

He doubts Adrian Malcolm will agree to such 'protective services', but he'd do his duty in asking nevertheless.

He shifts uncomfortably as Martín del Mar mentions the name again: The Darkest Day.

"I've never seen a darkness so absolute as when we fought against Necrozma during the Blackout," he offers. He had submitted a full report of his experiences with Lugia and the Light Devourer to Walsh and the rest of Rocket brass; whether or not Mars had caught up on reports made before his promotion to admin was unknown to Gavin. "Choi's body disappeared when we sent agents to retrieve it."
