The Grit Badge.

Talia took in a deep breath and exhaled, entering the Dewford Town gym with her beloved Dragonair by her side. Her sandaled feet made a clack sound on the floorboard, betraying the slightest sense of trepidation in her footsteps. A mantra repeated over and over in her mind: We become strong by pitting ourselves against the strong.

And Talia wanted to be strong, more than anything. Strong enough to protect those that needed it most.

"Hello?" she said, calling out tentatively to the man who seemed to be the gym leader. "My name is Talia Celes. I am here for... Oh! Beau Fontaine! We've met before, haven't we?"

She smiled at this unexpected good fortune, her nerves considerably abating.

Beau claps the Mienfoo on his shoulder encouragingly as the small pokémon catches his breath. "You're almost at a new record, Feng! You're doing great, little dude, trust me." He hands the pokémon a small tumbler of water, which Feng immediately begins to down, and whips a clean white towel from around his neck to ruffle the mustelid's head fondly, which only manages to earn him a comically aggrieved expression from his pokémon.

As Feng finishes his water, Beau reclaims the small tumbler and gestures to the rear of the gym. "One more lap and you're at your new best, brah! Get out there and give it all you've got - I believe in you!" He offers his closed fist to the Mienfoo, who nods and fistbumps his trainer eagerly before taking off at a jog. The little pokémon is off like a shot to the rear of the gym, which is perhaps surprising in itself:

While the gym resembles little more than a particularly spacious fitness center, the rear wall has been fashioned entirely of enormous sliding panels that stretch floor-to-ceiling and that have, apparently, been retracted to either direction, leaving the entire side of the building open with a staggeringly picturesque view of the beach and sea beyond. Feng wastes no time in hopping down a series of wooden stairs built into the shoreline, allowing egress from the gym building to the beach itself, then takes off down the sands on what seems to be a relay course of some kind.

As Beau wipes his brow and slings his towel around his shoulders once more, he fails to notice the telltale footsteps of an approaching visitor. Her greeting does manage to catch his attention, however, and he turns to respond, his face lighting up in recognition as he realizes who she is.

"Oh, hey! Of course we've met, we're friends - isn't that what you said?" he grins broadly, striding up to her and offering a firm handshake. "You're even more easygoing than I am if you forget the guy who managed to drench you while you were minding your own business," he laughs.

The young man offers a grin and a wink to Talia's accompanying Dragonair, then returns his attention to the trainer herself. "So, what brings you by, friend Talia? I can put together a mean power wrap if you're hankering for lunch! Or," he adds, waggling his eyebrows playfully, "Did you come for the Gym Challenge?"

Laughing in embarrassment, Talia grinned. "Never! You are just harder to recognize when not drenched in ocean spray!"

At this question, however, Talia's easygoing expression faded as she straightened her shoulders, hoping to instill a serious posture in her presentation. "I am here for the gym challenge, in fact," she said, meeting his gaze. "I'd like to try the non-traditional method, if I could, with Lyra here."

The Dragonair wound about her as Talia spoke aloud, her glittering eyes blinking at Beau Fontaine curiously as the little wings on either side of her face fluttered with a beat of curiosity.

"What do you think?" Talia asked, wringing a sleeve anxiously. "Would you have room?"

Beau claps his hands, an easy grin blooming across his features. "That's a plan!" he effuses, nodding affirmatively. "Of course I've got room, my afternoon's clear - and even if it wasn't, I always make time for a pretty lady," he winks.

He indicates the rear of the gym with a thumb over his shoulder before turning and heading in that very direction, urging Talia to follow. "Alright, so the non-traditional challenge for Dewford is an obstacle course, which you've probably heard of. I did my best to make it infamous," he laughs good-naturedly.

He alights on the wooden steps allowing him to walk from the gym to the beach, glancing out over the water at the aforementioned course with a note of pride. "The goal is for you and your pokémon to tackle the course together, and make it from the beginning to the end without falling into the water or onto the beach."

He glances back to Talia, mischief in his eyes. "It's not about bringing the strongest, it's about bringing the one who will see it through to the end, and it's up to you to hold up your end of the team. Determination's the word, here!"

He arrives at their destination, stepping to one side of a low ramp that rises from the beach to a small platform perched just over the surface of the water. "Don't be nervous - head on up and then I'll explain the first hurdle!"

Beau's words calmed and soothed Talia alike, her shoulders relaxing as she nodded in understanding. "It's not about strength and power in the traditional sense, then," she agreed, warming to the notion. "It's grit, then. Fortitude and determination."

All things that the young woman possessed in spades.

"I believe I understand, now. Thank you." A gentle smile graced her lips as she beckoned to the Dragonair. "Come, Lyra. Let's begin."

With slow, thoughtful steps, the turquoise-haired woman ascended to the small platform that Beau Fontaine indicated, lifting the hem of her robes to allow for ease of movement. Sparkling blue water surrounded the artificial island on all sides, and the dancer stared down at her reflection with idle curiosity, wondering what hurdle might emerge from the watery depths.

"What now?" she asked, her nerves now replaced with breathless excitement.

Almost as in response to Talia's query, the water begins to ripple in multiple places before two dozen or more small, circular platforms burst forth from the water in an enormous cluster, each rising to the height of the platform Talia currently stands on. They loosely form a wide pathway leading to another platform further out on the water, but one or two offer a telltale wobble, indicating that they may not all be as stable as they seem.

Challenging an Obstacle:

Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Lyra the Dragonair, she may fly with you for support, but this obstacle is for Talia herself.

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Watch Your Step!

This obstacle features dozens of platforms that are only large enough for one person to stand on at a time - think stepping-stones on poles. You must navigate from your current platform to the next by choosing the correct path across these small platforms.

However: some of the platforms are deliberately tricky, and will swing wildly to one side or the other rather than support your weight! You may RP any difficulty you have with this in the manner you deem fit; the mechanical challenge is only in the stamina system outlined above.

One by one, dozens of the narrow poles arose from the water at Beau Fontaine's command, setting forth countless paths to the finish line. "Ah," Talia said softly, listening intently as the instructions were spoken aloud. "Understood," she said in a serious tenor, her earrings jangling once more as she nodded again.

Lyra slithered between them all curiously in mid-air, her large eyes gazing thoughtfully at her mistress as Talia pushed back her sleeves and tied her long robes at the waist with a sash. Dexterity would prove no issue; balance was something she had trained for her entire life in the Ecruteak Dance Theater.

"Okay," she said, exhaling. "Let's see what we can do to improve our odds, hm, Lyra?"

The Dragonair then began to coil about the various platforms, crooning an exquisite melody as she began to perform a DRAGON DANCE. As the serpentine Pokemon became more agile and forceful, so too did Talia appear to gain a sense of grace alongside her Pokemon as she began a dance of her own -- pirouetting from delicate structure to structure, never hesitating long enough for it to capsize. That would not be her issue, no.

The question would be if she had chosen the right path, among the myriad that Beau Fontaine had laid out for her.

When Talia had come to Dewford Gym, she had thought it would be her time among the Rangers that would prove most useful. Who knew that a life of music and performance would prove to be its own strength, in its own way?

Beau watches the young lady steel herself when confronted by the first obstacle, though he can't quite keep himself from leaning forward in interest as Lyra the Dragonair begins weaving an intricate Dragon Dance between the platforms. While far from the most seasoned battler, he can't quite say he's ever seen a pokémon's inspirational attack used to benefit its trainer.

Despite the oddity of the situation, it certainly seems to - or, at the very least, it has imbued her with a sense of confidence she had to that point been sorely lacking. The Gym Leader can't help but grin madly to himself as Talia dances lightly across the treacherous pedestals as though they were the widest road imaginable, her footfalls so light that they prove no more obstruction than a cobblestone path.

"Keep going!" he bellows up at her, pumping his fist in the air. "You're doing great, just watch the edge!" He doesn't know whether avidly cheering on one's challengers is the done thing, where Gym Leaders are concerned, but the young woman pirouetting across one of his trickiest obstacles is not the same one that entered, nervous to bits, through his front door, and damn if he's not going to watch her fly.

A path unfolded before Talia with each twirl across the narrow poles, precious little time afforded to her with each graceful step. The finish line came into view before her, Lyra's serpentine body winding about the gym's obstalce course in an invigorating dance. The Dragonair's crooning voice lent a melody to her motion, and with Beau Fontaine's shouts of encouragement, Talia felt her heart soar within her chest.

She was so close now. If her agility held, and she had chosen the right platforms... Then she could accomplish the feat without issue, and dance her way to the end.

Beau lets out a loud whoop as Talia alights on the final platform, pumping his fist in the air from his vantage point on the beach. "Great job!! I knew you could do it!" he hollers.

The course appears to offer no rest for the wicked, however, and the second obstacle makes itself known the moment Talia arrives at her destination: A long rope bridge sways perilously in space from her platform to the next, spanning almost the entire length of the watery area that the course has led her to. Below, a Swampert circles lazily in the surf while a Poliwrath leaps from rock to rock.

The Gym Leader raises a silver whistle from around his neck, blowing into it with a sharp tweet. In response, the two water-types begin firing broad jets of water at the bridge - not striking it directly, but causing it to sway perilously from proximity to the blasts.

"Try not to get wet!" Beau calls out unhelpfully, a huge grin stretched across his features.

Obstacle: Bridge Work!

This obstacle features a rope bridge of wooden planks strung flat from one platform to the next. A rope runs along the center of the planks, while two are at waist level for Talia to hold and keep her balance. Take care, though! Beau's water pokémon are blasting geysers up from the shallows below - if one strikes, it's not liable to hurt very much, but it might be hard to stay on the bridge!

Talia's hands found light purchase on the swaying ropes, Beau Fontaine's Pokemon below her sending jets of water overhead. The bridge swayed unsteadily beneath her feet as the droplets scattered overhead, causing Talia to bite her lip in thought before she spoke aloud.

"THUNDER WAVE, Lyra. Down below." She indicated the Poliwrath with a jerk of her head. "Keep it from splashing me so much, if you would?" She grinned, having gained confidence from the previous round.

The Dragonair obliged, gracefully winding over the water as electricity crackled along the entire length of her body. It danced towards the Water-type Pokemon in guttering sparks, seeking to render it immobile with paralysis as Talia continued boldly forward.

Ahab the Poliwrath is clearly not expecting retribution, and Lyra's THUNDER WAVE jolts through him with an almost lazy current of electricity, sparking in the water around him. Stiffening, he falls sideways from his perch and into the shallows with a choked cry.

Nemo, for his part, redoubles his efforts, though hazards from one pokémon are still fewer than hazards from two. The Swampert fires jet after jet of water, one missing Talia's moving form by the barest of margins, and, after a moment of careful aim, one smacking square into the planks of the bridge several feet behind Talia, sending the entire assemblage swaying crazily from side to side.

Talia cried out with mild surprise and alarm as the rope bridge began to sway even more, having anticipated a far easier time after the Poliwrath was compromised.

Her fingers curled tighter about the rope, holding herself steady as she tiptoed forward. Inhale. Exhale. Pretend you're still dancing.

As if encouraging her, Lyra continued to follow around the expanse of the obstacle course, her beautiful big eyes never leaving her trainer for a moment as she advanced forward.

"Ah! The end is in sight," Talia whispered, anxious as she continued across a particularly frayed and challenging part of the bridge.

As Talia finishes her bridge crossing to the penultimate platform, Beau lets out a sharp whistle that echoes across the beach, causing Nemo to cease his attack, instead lumbering over to Ahab the Poliwrath who comes slowly to his feet, stiff from paralysis.

"Alright, great job, miss Talia!" Beau calls out, waving enthusiastically at his challenger. He has, by appearances, relocated to the final platform, standing directly across from the young woman next to a short pedestal holding the Grit Badge. A gap of perhaps twenty feet separates the two, and at the edge of Talia's current vantage point rests the final obstacle:

A hot-pink surfboard emblazoned with a pop-art rendering of a Luvdisc.

The surfboard is fixed firmly to a cylindrical mast that stretches below to a squared raft, nearly a platform in its own right, though the board sways and rocks gently from the natural motion of the water. Below, around the raft, a school of Wishiwashi churns eagerly, as though ready to propel it across the gap.

"This is the last one," Beau explains, pointing at the surfboard with a self-satisfied grin. "I thought since you hadn't tried surfing when we first met, now oughtta do the trick! My little dudes down there will get you across, no tricks, but that water ain't the steadiest. Just gotta hang on 'till you get over here, and the badge is yours!" He shoots her a thumbs-up, nodding encouragingly.

Obstacle: Surf's Up!

A curious mechanism has been constructed for Talia in her final obstacle in the form of a square raft bearing a single tall mast, which supports a brightly-colored surfboard at the same level as the platform she currently stands on. The badge is in sight - she must simply keep her balance on the board and not let the lapping shallows or the helpful - if exuberant - movement of Beau's Wishiwashi jostle her from her perch as she is conveyed to her final goal!
