Though the water jostles the board treacherously, he notes - at no surprise - that the dancer has no trouble whatsoever keeping her balance; whatever struggle she has is clearly not evident on the outside, and he can't help but grin in encouragement. i'll chase the light of that distant star

What had started as an awkward exercise in balancing became something smooth and effortless as Talia glided over the gentle waves, her eyes fixed upon the finish line.

Somehow she had not expected this challenge to be so... affirming? That so much of it would in truth be a measure of her own self-worth, the skills she herself had honed in childhood and practised many days and nights to walk the path of a dancer. There had been a part of her that had been ashamed of all the time lost to this profession that no longer seemed practical in an age of chaos and war.

But now... Now, as she reached the end of her journey for this badge? Her heart swelled with pride.

"We did it," she whispered breathlessly to Lyra as the two arrived at journey's end, hugging the neck of the Dragonair as she stepped off the board, then turned her beaming smile to Beau Fontaine.

Beau makes no effort to suppress the warm smile that overtakes his features as Talia manages to balance perfectly on the board as it coasts across the remaining gap to the platform. As she steps off, so self-assured, he approaches and offers a warm, hearty handshake, grinning so widely his cheeks hurt.

"Congratulations!" the man enthuses, clapping the younger woman lightly on the shoulder and flashing a smile at her Dragonair. "I gotta admit, I was a little worried there on the bridge, but boy you sure put me to shame! That's a badge you definitely earned, brah!"

He plucks the Grit Badge from its pedestal, a tiny thing in the shape of a blue-and-orange stylized boxing glove, and presents it to Talia with the pomp and ceremony of perhaps a really cool trading card. "You didn't give up, not once, even if you maybe doubted yourself. You made it to the end, y'know? Not a lot of people can say that." He laughs, rubbing the back of his head nervously.

"I hope you remember that, wherever you end up after this. Life gets hard, man. You gotta stick to your guns and keep trucking no matter what, 'cause if those doubts and insecurities win, it's all over."

He leads her to the edge of the platform, gesturing to a low stairway that leads comfortably back across the water to the beach. That's his second winner in as many weeks - hm, maybe he'll need to toughen up the course for the next challenger...
