The signs of early spring show themselves wonderfully at Hoenn’s islands, warm sunlight being equally matched by gentle breeze just as Mars steps into Dewford’s gym.

There once had been a time when he had claimed to care little for such places and to only take part in challenges when there’s something to be gained from them: a donation to the Fortree gym’s bird sanctuary to benefit his image, one to Pacifidlog’s for the same reason and also to help out friend, seeing the strength of Sootopolis’ gym leader for himself, and much else. These days, however, his reasons to sign up for Dewford’s gym challenge are much different…

To put it simply: it sounds like a good time

Such being the case, so it is that the ever-busy businessman cleared a few hours in his schedule to sail to the island, eyes of amber colour now scanning its gym’s foyer from behind aviator sunglasses.

Although the gym as a concept is relatively spacious, much of the activity appears to be happening on the beach and in the shallows behind the building itself. It certainly doesn't hurt matters that the structure completely lacks a wall in that direction, allowing for a stunningly scenic view of the blue sea and golden sands that ring Dewford.

Despite the temptation to more thoroughly enjoy the fair weather, Beau himself is occupied to one side of the gym, by all appearances spotting a Pangoro who is currently in the process of executing bench presses with an impressively-sized set of weights. The new arrival causes him to turn his head, offering a cheery grin over his shoulder. "Hi there! One sec, brah," he calls to the other man, tapping the Pangoro on the shoulder and helping him rack the weights with one final exertion and a loud, rattling CLANG.

The Pangoro sits up, and Beau removes a clean white towel from around his neck, tossing it to the larger pokémon. The bear offers a low grumble of assent, incongruously using it to scrub at his head and torso as Beau ambles over to Mars.

"Welcome to Dewford Gym! I'm Beau," he offers with a cheery grin, holding his hand out for a firm handshake. "A challenge, huh? Let's see...I've got a desk coming together in the office that's being a real pain, I feel like that's pretty challenging!"

He laughs brightly at his own statement, offering a sly wink. "Nah, just kidding. So!" he proclaims, clapping his hands together and surveying the other man, "This is where I'm supposed to tell you that the buzzword here is 'Determination', but you seem like a fella who knows how to get what he wants."

"We've got two options, per your preference. We can go the traditional route and have our pokémon duke it out, orrrr," he drawls, gesturing to the absent back wall of the gym and the array of structures dotting the shoreline and the surrounding water, "You can take the challenge to make it to the end of the obstacle course with a pokémon of your choice without falling onto the beach or into the water!" he grins. "Between you and me, nice and warm as it is outside, I wouldn't mind a swim myself. Later, maybe!"

He crosses his arms and flashes a winning smile at the challenger. "Pick your poison, brah!"

First impressions have always been of great importance to Mars, and his first impression of Beau Fontaine is one that earns the Dewford gym leader a laugh – the firmness of his handshake matched. ”Ha! Sorry to say but while I’m talented at a great many things, I usually have other people build my furniture for me.” There’s a Cheshire-like playfulness to the way he grins, although admittedly most of his furniture tends to be the type that doesn’t need to be assembled to begin with. Rich people, am I right?

It’s then that sunglasses are removed while he listens to Beau’s explanations, paying close attention and weighing his options even though he already knows what he came here looking for. He had heard rumours about the challenges, after all. Word travels fast in a place like Hoenn.

”A man after my own heart, swimming is one of my favourite things.” Diving in particular, but the fact that the obstacle course means not being able to fall onto the beach or into the water leaves Mars to wonder about his choices in pokémon. ”The obstacle course sounds like something I have to try out. Sign me up! Though, does that mean my pokémon can’t go in the water either?”

"Nope!" Beau proclaims cheerfully. "We are an equal-opportunity physical health and training establishment, so you can choose any pokémon you like to participate, especially if you wanna give 'em a good workout!" He puffs his chest out proudly, accompanied by an enthusiastic thumbs-up. He beckons to Martin, turning and beginning a leisurely walk to the back of the gym and, consequently, the outdoor complex beyond.

"The object of the course is for both you and your pokémon to participate, because I want to see both of you work hard to earn the badge. If your pokemon can go through the obstacles with you, that's fine, but if, say, they have wings or gills and aren't as groundly-minded as the rest of us, we have special tracks that they can take while you go through the usual, so anything's fair game!"

As Beau reaches the back of the gym and begins walking down the low wooden steps that allow safe egress from the building to the beach below, he glances over his shoulder at Martin and offers a winning grin. "Trick is, though, it doesn't necessarily mean bringing the strongest bro you've got in your squad - bring the one that will see it through, because it can be harder than it looks!"

”That’s pretty cool. So, I’m guessing things like Teleportation and Phantom Force kind of defeat the purpose of it, huh?” Mars himself happens to be particularly fond of the former, and not just because of being a Psychic type specialist, but he had come here to actually try the obstacle course and test himself, so for once, he doesn’t bother with tricks. Shocker. ”Okay, I think I have a pretty good idea of what pokémon I want to use.”

An ever so slight smirk tugs at his lips, and without adding anything more, he walks with Beau Fontaine towards the back of the building. Explanations are carefully listened to, expectations being built in his mind as he considers possible strategies on how to go about this, because, well… that’s just how Mars is. If anything, by the time they make it onto the beach, above anything else he finds himself glad he decided to show up in athletic wear, since it sure sounds like it’ll be needed…

At this point, inevitably so, Mars wonders if Beau has ever met Tempest Quinn, because it sure sounds like they’d get along. Maybe it’s the whole ‘gym bro who is an actual gym leader’ thing or something. Whatever the case, it amuses Mars, and a light chuckle leaves him. ”Sure thing. How about this…”

From the pockets of his shorts, a minimised Luxury Ball is retrieved. He wastes no time before returning it to its usual size, and after clicking the button on it, it’s in a flash of crimson light that a Noivern of teal-coloured scales appears before them.

Urania. Not a pokémon belonging to either of his specialisations, but one that has accompanied him through quite a lot ever since moving to Hoenn.

"Got it in one!" Beau nods gamely in reference to Martin's assumption about a more direct approach. "Wouldn't be much worth celebrating if you blinked past all the good stuff to snag the prize, don't you think?" he grins.

Ostensibly pausing to take in the sheer array of structures and towers that have been built along waterside, Beau allows the other man a moment to ruminate on his choice of companion. The Luxury Ball appearing doesn't faze him in the slightest, given the way his challenger carries himself, but the Noivern that follows earns a pair of raised eyebrows and a broad, eager smile.

"Ooh, this'll be fun," Beau laughs, giving a genial nod to the batlike pokémon. "Nemo, Torben - get the aerials ready, would you guys?" he calls out to a low, craggy series of rocks seated further into the water. Roused, a Pangoro clambers slowly up from his resting spot, while a Swampert breaches the water's surface nearby. Both offer a wave to Beau before they trundle off to make their preparations.

As for the man himself, he steps aside to clear the way up a low ramp rising from the beach to a small platform above. "That's your starting point," he quips to Martin, gesturing to the ramp. "When you're ready, you two can head up and I'll explain the first obstacle!"

While looking at the obstacle course, Mars considers Beau Fontaine’s question, because as obviously rhetorical as it may have been, the fact of the matter is that could do as much and that it would be worth celebrating to him. A test of his new abilities, if you will. One that sadly can’t occur because it would be stupid to go around letting League officials know that he can do that sort of thing.

On the bright side, athletic as Mars has always considered himself to be, he’s also fond of the idea of putting his own physical prowess to the test. And that of his pokémon!

After how things had gone during the excursion into the Tree of Life, Urania could probably use some practice with aerial obstacles.

”Let’s get started, then. No time to waste!” He grins, ever confident, and as if responding to her trainer’s enthusiasm, the draconic bat lets out a piercing cry. Her wings open wide, bright scarlet under the sun, and in one swift and powerful motion, she rises to the skies.

Mars steps towards the ramp while the Noivern dutifully follows from up above, his attention only returning to the gym leader once standing at the starting point.

”Alright, Beau! Let’s hear it.”

Beau's laugh sounds up from a vantage point below the platform - even if he can't be seen from Mars' current position, his enthusiasm is infectious. "Alright! This first obstacle has something for the both of you to do, so don't get distracted!"

A loud, metallic "CLANK" sounds from below, and up on Mars' platform, a metal arm swings into view, bearing a hanging handle resembling - if one is generous and possibly squinting - the handlebars of a bicycle. The handle is attached to a thick, braided wire that leads purposefully from the platform down over the water to a square wooden raft floating in the middle of the shallows.

At the same time as the zip-line swings into place, a flock of Wingull launch themselves from the rocks of Dewford's traditional arena, winging graceful paths at varying levels of elevation and in various patterns - some lazy and slow, some wildly erratic. From the webbed legs of each, gleaming silver bells hang from yard-long strings, glinting in the midday light. Despite their frenetic activity, not one of the flying pokémon leave the perimeter of the challenge area - well-trained, or dense? One might never know.

Challenging an Obstacle:

[break][break]
Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Urania the Noivern, some obstacles may be terrestrial for Mars, and some may be aerial for Urania. As an example, the first obstacle features a relatively simple task for Mars, and more involvement on Urania's part.

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Zip It! + Be There With Bells On

[break][break]
Mars' challenge for the first obstacle is "Zip It!". This entails riding a zip-line to the raft without letting go despite the increasing speed of travel along the downward-inclined line.

Urania's challenge for the first obstacle is "Be There With Bells On", and is slightly more involved. A flock of Wingull is circling the area. Urania must demonstrate agility, precision, and speed to retrieve five silver bells that the Wingull are towing with them.

A zip line.

Martín del Mar is not a man who would call himself an adrenaline junkie, but he is someone who likes to try new things and have a good time. Some of his hobbies could be called relaxing, some could be called rather extreme, and while zip lining is not something he has personally tried before today, holding the handlebar brings certain reminders to him.

As he had told BARNABY FINCH while indulging in way too much gin, there had once been a time when he had dislocated his shoulder when trying to drunkenly swing from a chandelier, and maybe that memory should make this be all too concerning to him, but the truth is that the feeling of holding the handle also reminds him of something much more familiar…

Wakeboarding.
[break][break]
Mars loves wakeboarding. And, if he can ride a board while having a SPEED BOOST Sharpedo pull him along, surely he can handle a zip line, no?

”Oh, this is going to be fun.” His confidence knows no bounds. He could jump down right there and then, but first, Mars looks up at the dragon circling above. ”Take it easy, Urania. Grab the bells, but try not to disturb the Wingull too much. You got this.”

They’re not words of encouragement but of certainty, and with them, he takes a step off the platform without any hesitation – hands firmly gripping the handle and gaze fixed on the raft beneath.

The air’s resistance tousles soft brunette hair as the speed increases, and up above, the Noivern approaches the much smaller birds that far outnumber her. Her size may come as a disadvantage, but Urania is smart and as fast as they come, and without boosting her speed or doing anything to scare away the birds just yet, she uses the dexterity of her claws to begin snatching up bells while mimicking the flight pattern of the Wingull. A sneaky INFILTRATOR, capable of breaking through any barrier to achieve her goals and attempting to fly almost as if she were one of them.

Beau offers a low, appreciative whistle from his vantage point as Urania effortlessly flies alongside the Wingull, weaving between the smaller birds so smoothly that it scarcely disturbs their flight paths. Bell after bell is quietly pilfered with nary a sign of a scuffle, and the Gym Leader can't help but allow a small grin to curl the corners of his mouth. It's impressive, but he expected to be impressed given the other man's bearing from the minute he walked into the gym.

More unfortunate is the notion that he can't lay eyes on Mars' current platform, as he's currently posted up on the beach directly beneath it. Still, he hasn't yet seen a bougie trust fund beneficiary make a swift and abrupt descent onto the raft yet, so he's reasonably certain he's safe to call up a little unsolicited advice.

"Hang on tight!" he hollers, cupping a hand to his mouth and directing his voice to the platform above. "Gets a little hairy toward the end, so don't let go until you see planks underneath you, brah!"

Here’s the thing about wakeboarding: from beginning to end, you’re technically not supposed to let go of the handle unless you want your fun to quickly stop as soon as you lose momentum. You’re also supposed to hold the handle at waist-level and not over your head, so there’s another key difference with Mars’ current situation...

Zip lining lasts only seconds, and above all else, it reminds Mars of that feeling that comes the moment right before needing to get off a chairlift or t-bar when going snowboarding. A matter of good timing, of knowing when to let go in order to land safely and avoid disaster. Truth be told, he barely hears Beau Fontaine’s words, but the advice is something that rings in his mind as well:

”Don't let go until you see planks underneath you.”

There’s no fear of letting go, no concern over the possibility of falling into the water, but he knows what the objective is, and he holds on tightly until the second when his fingers release their grip. He intends on landing on his feet, and fond of sailing as Mars is, he’s well aware that when it comes to rafts – like with any small boat – the distribution of weight on it is key.

In theory, he knows every step, but a lot of mishaps and unforeseen things can happen in practice. The wrong timing… one missed step… It could happen to the best of them.

Mars jumps down onto the raft there and then, and just as he does as much, Urania reaches for the last bell with an open maw – the rest of them chiming as they hang off strings held by those claws of hers.

Beau grins as the other man absolutely nails the landing, watching with some interest as Urania descends at the same time, both challengers having completed their tasks in near-record time. He can't say he's surprised, after all, but he does enjoy seeing people succeed.

The next obstacle looms ahead, however, and in Mars' case it involves a steeply-inclined wall rising out of the water just to the far side of the raft. "Next up, just gotta climb to the top of that wall, brah!" Beau calls. "And I do mean climb, not fly!"

Almost comically, the bubble-headed face of a Dewpider pops into view at the top of the wall. Jumping upward in surprise, it begins to prance back and forth along the upper edge of the wall, engaging in a Water Sport that quickly and constantly drenches the surface of the wall in a sheet of flowing water, sure to make progress tricky at best and - well - damp at worst.

Obstacle: A Slippery Slope!

This obstacle features a sharply-inclined wall that must be climbed to progress. Making the process more difficult is Beau's Dewpider, who patrols the top of the wall with a ceaseless Water Sport that makes progressing up the wall a slick proposition indeed!

When he jumps, he finds firm footing, white sneakers hitting the raft at almost the exact same time so as to avoid tipping it over. Weight distribution and all that. Mars steadies himself, exhaling in pure relief, and once he does so, a bright smile illuminates his expression.

”Ha!”

That had been exhilarating, and up above, Urania roars, circling over him in a way that casts passing shadows just as Mars turns his attention to his next obstacle.

A wall.
[break][break]
One guarded by a sneaky little Dewpider.
[break][break]
”Urania!” Grinning, Mars calls to the dragon’s attention, a finger pointing directly at the wall. ”I’m climbing! Use your TAILWIND on the wall!”
[break][break]
He could have her deal with the Dewpider, but that would be no fun, so instead, when the Noivern positions herself behind him, right over the water, it’s by flapping her powerful wings that she calls forth a TAILWIND. Mars can feel the gust behind him, and he sees the way it hits the wall, pushing the water that’s ceaselessly shot down by the Dewpider and hopefully drying part of the wall as it does so.

With that part of the plan in place, all that’s left is the actual climbing. His gaze remains fixed on the wall, and after a quick change of stance in preparation, he runs towards it…

The winds produced by the Noivern increase his speed, and taking advantage of the momentum, Mars kicks the wall, jumping to take a step and reach for the edge. From then on, it’s a matter of upper body strength and of not slipping thanks to the water.

A difficult task, and yet he’s clearly enjoying himself.

He's pretty sure the Gym Leader Rulebook doesn't have a provision for rallying challengers to actually get through a Gym Challenge with as much ease as possible. Then again, Beau isn't exactly dealing in poison darts and spike traps. Nevertheless, he can't quite help a delighted "Ooh." from escaping as he witnesses Urania create a Tailwind - not enough to harm his overeager Dewpider, but certainly enough to keep a path dry before Mars' ascent, clear water trickling down either side of the wind current without further drenching the wall ahead of his challenger.

Beau doesn't think he can really add any more insight to this particular conversation, given the other man has managed to neutralize the difficult portion of this particular challenge, so he wisely remains silent. His Dewpider, on the other hand, offers an affronted sound not unlike blowing a wet raspberry, redoubling its efforts with an almost hilarious quantity of water rushing down the wall - but none of it manages to encroach on the path of Urania's Tailwind.
