Reluctantly, grudgingly, and all too unenthusiastically, Ceri had made the executive decision to spend a few hours of precious free time on a trek through Hoenn’s ever well-travelled Route 116.

Why, you ask? Does she like this sort of thing? Is she the sort of person who puts ‘hiking’ on her Tinder bio and accompanies that with aesthetic pictures in questionable poses taken up in some mountain trail?
[break][break]
Not really, even if she sure is dressed for it. Hence the ‘reluctantly, grudgingly, and all too unenthusiastically’ part of this.
[break][break]
So, like, apparently – and to Ceri this was one hell of a wild revelation – having a whole bunch of pokémon of just one or two types may not be the greatest idea out there. Crazy, right? Now, in her defence, she has never considered herself a pokémon trainer and her battle experience is minimal. She doesn’t care for those sorts of things, but it seems as if ‘not caring’ is a luxury she cannot afford lately. Thus, here she is!

”Okay, Domino! Be a cutie and let me know if you see anything useful, yeah?” She tells the black and white Salandit by her side with a smile, but a sigh escapes her soon enough.

THE SOUND OF NATURE is interrupted by the sound of an explosion. like an audible pop, harsh energy releases a concussive blast that rattles the tree and upturns dirt. fernando shields his eyes with the cusp of his hand as he overlooks the battle.

further up the trail, closer to rusturf tunnel, fernando’s shaymin takes to the skies. it’s SEED FLARE leaves tinges of green energy as it continues to soar into the sky, rounding a horizontal loop as it stalks its prey.

Wireless earbuds are nice, but they sure aren’t noise-cancelling enough to block away the sound of actual explosions nearby. It almost goes well with Ceri’s upbeat electronic music of choice. Almost.

Definitely not well enough for her not to notice, pause, take off her earbuds, and look in the direction where verdant energy scatters into the skies.

Her thoughts on the matter?

”Cool. Gotta check that out.”
[break][break]
Of course, she hadn’t expected to find him out of all people when stepping closer, but apparently Mr. “Name’s Silph. FERNANDO SILPH.” seems to be fast becoming a man who constantly defies what she expects of him. It’s more fun that way, isn’t it?
[break][break]
When she approaches, her steps are as quiet as those of a Vulpix wearing fairy-granted foxgloves, but the sound of her voice is far from that. ”Don’t you think that’s kind of overkill?” Ceri giggles, amused, beaming up at him with a smile as bright as hers tend to be.
[break][break]
Her Salandit, however, seems to care little for the CEO or the dog up in the skies, instead focusing his attention on an all too oblivious feline napping on a low hanging branch nearby. With sharp claws, Domino deftly climbs up the trunk, and the poor Delcatty soon finds herself being bitten by POISON FANGS. A chase ensues, the Delcatty’s CUTE CHARM causing Domino to become infatuated upon contact, but the lizard is nothing short of relentless, and infatuation only makes him more likely to try to keep attacking the Prim Pokémon that simply chose the wrong spot where to take a nap.

And Ceri? Ceri pays it no mind.

she manages to sneak up on him, causing him to answer instinctively, raw and real. before he even recognizes who he’s talking to, he responds with a proper answer.

“no.”

the smoke clears and the jynx is still standing. for all the theatrics that SEED FLARE boasts, it’s far from potent against the far-from-home ice type pokemon.

with an exclamatory huff, the pokemon shoots a MEAN LOOK at the perpetrator. stunned, the shaymin freezes, entering freefall until it lands on the ground with a resounding thud.

fernando unholsters a pokeball as he waits for his shaymin to climb back to its feet. “but it’ll do,” he finishes, capturing the jynx after a PSYCHIC blast.

Is it not in the nature of a researcher to pay attention to even the most miniscule of details? To look out for subtle changes?

As if he had suddenly become a subject to be studied, Ceri gazes up at FERNANDO SILPH, and in doing so, she notices it: the fact that she had apparently taken him by surprise, and in doing so, she had received a response that hadn’t been carefully crafted by the perfect piece of machinery that must surely be his mind. If she weren’t smiling already, without a doubt, this fact alone would cause her to smile.

”Will it?” An eyebrow is raised, playfully daring to question his mentality, and as she does so, those russet-coloured eyes of hers turn to look at the frozen Shaymin, her smile subtly shifting to a slight smirk. ”Doubt your popsicle over there agrees.”

Perhaps she shouldn’t be teasing him like this, but Ceri has a tendency towards doing things she shouldn’t, and admittedly, she also doubts he even remembers who she is. Why would he? Ceri is not someone to have low self-esteem, quite the contrary, yet realistically speaking, there’s no reason for a man like him to remember her given the circumstances under which they met. Perhaps she should try to find her answer, but for now, she chooses to ignore the matter, instead turning her attention to the sight of a shy Deerling hiding amongst the nearby bushes.

”Aw, aren’t you a cutie?” She coos at the Season Pokémon, bringing a granola bar out of her pocket and attempting to use it to lure it closer to her. The Deerling takes a few cautious steps, and while the thought crosses her mind of how terribly easy it would be to tell Domino to attack and bring it down, Ceri simply waits, allowing the wild pokémon to taste the treat she had offered.

the pokeball chimes with a definite click. a successful capture adds another pokemon to his repertoire. he collects it, along with himself, in the face of her challenge.

“up.”

the shaymin rises, no longer paralyzed by the ethereal feel of MEAN EYES upon it. it kicks off, fur bristling before it takes to the sky.

“there.”

fernando points to a furfrou within their field of vision. unlike ceri, there is no appeal to mutual acceptance. battles comes quick and it ends just as fast. repeated attacks, both physical and long-ranged, beat the other pokemon well into submission.

“without a doubt.”

the pokeball that flies confirms his confidence.

She had counted them. Six words spoken from the moment she last addressed him. Four for her, two for his pokémon. As if each one of them were valuable and precious resources that could not be wasted in the form of idle chatter. Is that how FERNANDO SILPH lives life, trying to be as efficient as possible? Or, is it greed that leads him to hoard even his syllables?

”You were much chattier the last time we talked. Guess it must have been because of the League obligation and all.” The comment comes out as if her own musings spoken out loud – like if she were amused by the realisation. By then, the Deerling has already been sent to the confines of a pokéball, and Ceri’s gaze follows the movement of the Shaymin after it defeats its opponent. It would seem as if the councilman trains his pokémon to be as efficient as him.

There’s something mechanical about it. Almost robotic in nature.

And yet, she had caught him by surprise before, had she not?

”The florist sent the flowers was pleased.” Ceri turns to look at him then, gaze fixed on his expression, as if watching for a reaction. However, her head tilts, questioning. ”What do you make of it?”

“TIME AND PLACE,” he replies, goading her intentionally this time. he already has his sights on another pokemon, a blot of white not too far in the distance.

“there,” he points out yet again, directing his shaymin with a point of his finger.

the pokemon takes off, launching a proactive SEED FLARE as the battle clashes behind them. the sound of energys blast imploding and psychic powers take up the most of his attention.

an eyebrow quirks despite watching the oranguru being beaten into submission.

“what am i supposed to make of it?”

He has to be making fun of her, right?

The thought crosses her mind. And yet, even though it does, Ceri is not nearly prideful enough to pretend as if it doesn’t bother her. She crosses her arms, she shakes her head, and she sighs, almost as if she were saying ”What am I going to do with you?”
[break][break]
’Nothing’, is the obvious answer, but when she thinks of it, she chuckles lightly, the sound rising for a second in the midst of the strife caused by a pokémon that is supposed to represent gratitude.

”Well… Fair! I’ll stop bothering you with questions, then.”
[break][break]
For now, at least. Until her curiosity gets the better of her and she feels obligated to ask something else. It always seems to be that way with her.

Plus, she’s now 20% sure that FERNANDO SILPH must be at least part robot.

POKEMON ARE TRADED LIKE COLLECTABLE CARDS. when fernando counts a sufficient amount of victories. a colossal heatran takes the shaymin’s position, burly in stature, as it trample grass and ground alike.

“don’t you mean—three o’clock!”

he’s interrupted mid-sentence by the sight of their next prey. a wandering beldum is subjugated to fire and brimstone. when it falls, and the pokeball scoops it up, fernando continues.

“—bother you question stop then?”
