It’s a small world, huh? Or, well, more like a small region, since who would have thought that the oh so very Kalosian woman he met at Shoal Cave would end up becoming a gym leader?

A fun twist of fate, maybe.

On the other hand, though, the winter weather that overtakes the gym’s general area despite the fact that it’s been more than a week since the Vernal Equinox passed is… well, all too expected from someone who claimed to love Ice Types.

Thus, here is Mars: clad in the winter clothes he had thought he would be able to leave at the most distant portion of his closet (and let me tell you, it’s a really big closet), for at least a good six to eight months.

A mild annoyance, but leave it to Mars to make sure to look great even when wearing a parka, and of course, it’s with an all too radiant smile that he steps into the building that makes for Georgette Bluebottle’s gym.

A comfortable cabin nestled in the woods, idyllically covered in snow and frost, while a cheery warmth radiates from its windows greets Mars as he passes along the path to the designated building. Inside a comfortable fire crackles and pops and there stands Georgette, a light silver scarf wrapped around her neck and a mug of hot chocolate in her hands.

Her mouth hitches into a wide smile at Mars's pun, a laugh spilling from her lips. As she sets her mug down, the woman gestures to a pair of plush chairs to sit if he desires, while she settles comfortably onto one of the indicated seats. "Bonjour, Martín." Her warm timbre a sharp contrast to the cold outside, and she continues brightly, "I hope you have cleared your schedule, no? This challenge will take some time."

Georgette laces her hands together as she explains, "This will be a test of your survival skills with one pokemon to help you." Pausing, she consults her phone for a moment to observes, "You are bringing a Metagross." Smiling, she chatters pleasantly, "You will be led out to the start point - no phones, fire pokemon or moves, or any other use of outside help. We will simulate being stranded with only the clothes on your back. You will meet wild pokemon and other environmental obstacles to overcome."

The fact that Georgette Bluebottle can appreciate a silly throwaway pun earns her points in Mars’ book, and the smile that remains on his lips marks him as all too pleased with himself when he accepts her invitation and takes a seat.

”Will it? Well, I’m sure it’ll be worth my time.” The banker’s schedule is ever too packed, appointments being arranged minutes away from other appointments, while his freetime is scarce. He had cleared it for this challenge, however, at least a few hours, even if that means there will likely be a need for some juggling over the days to come. Perhaps his time management skills should be listed among his best qualities.

But instead of focusing on appointments to come, his attention is on the here and now, that amber gaze of his being fixed on the woman sitting next to him as she’s quick to explain what his challenge will be about.

Mars loves a good challenge, and while his Metagross is not a pokémon that will help with protecting him from harsh winter weather, there’s a few reasons why he had chosen to bring Armis with him out of all pokémon.

"I do not think there is much to say. Keep warm and moving. Do not get too lost." She pauses to rummage inside, pulling out a small satchel before beckoning her challenger after her, the pair exiting to the outdoors together. "You may release your pokemon now."

"This," she begins as she opens the satchel, "Is a walkie-talkie for you. If I need to contact you I will use this, no? There is also a flare gun which is only to be used in an emergency. If the flare is used you may consider your challenge over - you will be retrieved and taken to a warming station if needed." She gives a sharp, self-satisfied nod as she passes over the small bag, its contents practically weightless and easy to forget.

The pair come into a small clearing where Georgette draws them to a stop, a warm smile spared for her first challenger. "Good luck. I will see you at the end, no?" With that spoken she releases her Froslass, and with a bright, "Confuse Ray," which slams into Mars the world turns into a flurry of disorienting snow and ice.

A low note is emitted by the silver Metagross when released from its Luxury Ball, ringing through the cold air around them. It’s with crimson eyes that Armis looks at its trainer and the petite woman beside him, not seeming to care much for the low temperature.

Mars, on the other hand, can definitely feel the cold after having just been inside, and he finds himself glad to be wearing gloves while holding the satchel Georgette had given him. A walkie-talkie only to be used if she contacts him and a flare gun he definitely won’t use. He takes mental note of both of them, leaving the satchel in the care of Armis.

”Sounds exciting. See you at the e–” He doesn’t get to finish the sentence, because it’s then that the Froslass’ CONFUSE RAY strikes. A metallic note comes as a protest on part of the Metagross, and Mars leans against it in order not to lose his footing, giving no command to attack despite his increasing annoyance.

Somewhere near the Metagross, emanating from the satchel the pokemon holds, a staticky voice filters over the walkie talkie to direct:

For a second or two, maybe even three, he has half the mind to call an end to this challenge right here and give Georgette what she deserves for daring to catch him off-guard and use an attack on him. But, of course, Mars’ initial annoyance at the gym leader’s action is nothing but the result of his pride being exactly what it is, and once properly coming to his senses – due in no small part to the rude awakening that is the cold environment he finds himself in – only a sigh leaves him.

Then, through the walkie talkie, come instructions, and with them, bleating.
[break][break]
As Mars is quickly coming to learn: for a woman who seems so sweet, kind, lovely, and even adorable, Georgette Bluebottle can sure be wicked.

”Okay, Armis… Start off with Light Screens.”
[break][break]
A robotic sound is emitted by the Metagross, as if magic quick yet all too complex calculations. The WALLS OF LIGHT that are set between them and the Wooloo are sure to break upon contact, but in theory, they’re to slow the fall by decreasing the momentum of the rolling balls of will.

From there on, it’s on them, and although he finds the steel surface to be much more slippery than usual thanks to the gathering ice, Mars stands firmly on top of the Iron Leg Pokémon, ready to give his next command…

The last time Mars had climbed atop of Armis like this, they had been about to venture into the Tree of Life. The Metagross had expertly dodged the attacks of merciless roots and vines, taking advantage of its electrically-generated magnetism to levitate out of harm’s way.

This time, when Armis rises somewhat high above the ground, the intent is much different.
[break][break]
”Alright, Armis, let’s catch some Wooloo.”
[break][break]
And so they do, although the task proves to be slightly more challenging than what Mars had anticipated at first glance. He almost stumbles off onto the snow once or twice. "Woah, careful!" See, it’s a matter of getting the timing just right in order to catch the spinning Wooloo in his arms and then let them go somewhere safe, and the Sheep Pokémon go surprisingly fast despite how light they actually are.

Most don’t weigh more than six kilograms, and small as they are, a couple end up standing on the Metagross with him by the time Mars is done with the task…

As the first of the Wooloo slam into the Light Screen, sending shards of glittering light into the atmosphere to rain down around them like drops of sunlight, the trick does its intended goal; several of the Wooloo stop short at the sight, yellow eyes wide with curiosity at the splintering fractals, while others have their momentum slowed to a more reasonable speed, allowing an intrepid trainer to catch them up and set them down.

It is, all things considered, surprisingly difficult work, but when the snow clears and sweat begins to cling to Mars's brow the Wooloo now mill about carelessly, several looking up at the man with adoration upon their sweet little faces.

A buzz crackles over the walkie-talkie, and once more Georgette's staticky voice spills from the tinny speaker. "You have passed the first challenge, congratulations!" Bright and sweet, a sharp contrast to the woman who just had Mars blasted with a Confuse Ray.

"For your next challenge head southeast. You will find it easy."

The air in that direction is colder, teasing Mars along with the promise of another obstacle to overcome. Before long the tail draws up short; an ice crevasse rends the earth deeply and widely, making a simple run and jump impossible.

This sounds much more like the Georgette Bluebottle he knows, but the fact that Mars is now aware that such a woman can knock someone unconscious without even a warning makes him wary of both her tone and her words. Mars has never been one for underestimating people, but admittedly, this one had caught him off guard. He won’t make that same mistake again, that much he promises to himself.

Georgette is clearly not as innocent as she seems, so maybe her challenges aren’t either.

This thought is the reason why, as easy as she makes it sound and despite the fact that he’s already standing on his Metagross when reaching the crevisse after having used the sun’s position to figure out which way is southwest, he still tells Armis to pause before attempting to cross. Mars inspects his surroundings carefully then, gold-coloured eyes wandering over the blue and white hues of the ice, and after a moment, he sighs.

A metallic hum comes as response, and thanks to its MAGNET RISE, the Metagross’ all too heavy body lifts off the ground once more, as if it weighed nothing at all.

Perhaps Mars should count himself lucky that he’s not one to often suffer from vertigo. Heights rarely bother him much, for he does spend almost every single day at the very top of an all too tall tower, and he has grown used to flying with his Noivern and Braviary alike.

Still, even if that’s the case, when his Metagross levitates past the snow-coated ground and over the deep ravine, he does not look down. His gaze remains fixed on the other side, on solid ground, and his attention remains on making sure not to slip off the Metagross.

For safety’s sake, he ends up sitting atop of Armis instead of standing, and when they finally make it to the other side of the crevice, Mars jumps off, causing frozen flakes to rise in a small flurry when his boots meet the snow.

”Good job, Armis.”

Naturally, the Metagross responds with a robotic sound that fails to express any clear emotion.

As Mars rises into the air atop is Metagross the temperature plummets; paired with the utter cold radiating off the Metagross, the trainer's knee joints practically scream when he stands again, the skin of his legs surely a raw red now. Breath freezing on the air as he praises Armis, a soft clicking noise from the satchel precedes the staticky voice of Georgette breaking the silence of the cold.

"No, I do ... so .. kshhkh .. are you?" There is shuffling on the other end of the line, soft snatches of comforting words not directed at Mars occasionally coming through the walkie-talkie as Georgette tends to whatever has happened.

"Martín?" Georgette's voice is suddenly clear through the speaker, a note of concern evident in her tone. "I need you to search around you. Do you see any pokemon tracks in the snow? There is report of an Ursaring near you and it must know Fire Punch. I have found a half-melted Vanillite. The tracks will be broad, and have five long claws at the top. Do not fight if you see it. We will relocate it."

So, here’s the thing, right? Mars can tolerate some cold. He grew up in Sinnoh, after all, and Sinnoh is supposed to be a cold region, but within said region, Canalave is probably one of the warmest cities of all. He had, however, spent countless winter days at his family’s chalet near Lake Acuity… where he had only really dealt with the cold when going snowboarding or so, because of course the heating system within the building itself was flawless.

This cold is a different kind of beast, and good lord, he fucking hates it.

So much so, in fact, that when hearing the sound of the walkie-talkie, there’s the rising hope that Georgette Bluebottle is calling to tell him the challenge is over and he will soon be indoors drinking some nice hot chocolate with marshmallows and everything. But, no, apparently there’s a wild Ursaring nearby. Of course there’s a damn Ursaring nearby.

All Georgette does is tell him to be careful, and Mars sighs as an empty response, his hand still resting on Armis despite the fact that touching the pokémon’s steel body now feels as if touching a damn icicle.

”Keep an eye out, Armis.” Naturally, as fate would have it, it's just as Mars says this that he notices the tracks.

Maybe it’s the steadily decreasing temperature that causes Mars’ thoughts to spiral out of control, maybe it’s the surge of adrenaline that comes with the sudden change of circumstances, maybe it’s Maybelline…

So, here’s the thing: logic dictates that FIRE PUNCH or not, his Metagross shouldn’t have much of a problem dealing with an Ursaring. A METEOR MASH here, a FLASH CANNON there, easy as can be. Hell, if things got too tricky, Armis could just MEGA EVOLVE and go for the overkill. That’s all well and good, but the problem is that Georgette had said, word-for-word: ”Do not fight if you see it.”

Fuck him. What the hell is he going to do, then? Stand behind Armis’ LIGHT SCREEN and hope for the best? FIRE PUNCH isn’t even classified as a special move, LIGHT SCREEN may not even work! Not to mention that just standing around and waiting for help to come totally isn’t Mars’ thing.

So, what to do, then?

The Fates must be really angry with him today or something, because of course, it’s as he ponders all of this and approaches the tracks to get a better look at them that he hears a roar coming from the nearby trees. Mars sighs, as if he suddenly were really really tired of all of this. Call it a test of his endurance indeed.

”Alright, Armis… It worked for us twice before, so let's do this again.”

Not to be repetitive or anything, but Mars finds the strength in him to get onto the Metagross once more, this time sitting down because he sure can’t be bothered with standing while idly waiting for people to come deal with the Ursaring. Just as Armis begins to levitate thanks to its MAGNET RISE, gloved hands reach for the walkie talkie, bringing it close to his face and pressing the button at its side.

”Hey, Gigi.” Despite not feeling too great at the time, Mars manages to sound all too nonchalant, sitting comfortably on his cold-as-fuck pokémon while looking down upon the enraged Ursaring that seems unable to reach them for now. ”Found your bear.”

He should’ve done this challenge with one of his other Psychic types, but let the record show: MAGNET RISE saves lives.
