The last time Luka had been in Pacifidlog, it had been ravaged by a spatial distortion. And though it's long since faded, the effects remain. Habitats out of whack, people and Pokemon still reeling from an event that had come and gone as quickly as summer lightning.[break][break]

But today, the waters are calm. The sun sparkles off of lazy ocean swells and the scales of several Luvdisc, their pink fins jutting out of the water as they swarm around their trainer.[break][break]

And Luka herself is lost in thought as she stares into the deep water. Whatever lies beneath her flippered feet is surely a task better suited to rangers, or literally anyone else. And yet she can't help her bleeding heart, or ignore the distressed cries of her own Luvdisc as they fret over their endangered kin.[break][break]

A light splash jolts her from her reverie; she's not the only one on the docks of Pacifidlog. The stranger is afforded a small half-smile and a nod of acknowledgment, but little more. She has to be serious, right? This kind of thing is what serious people do.[break][break]

And yet she continues to hesitate as her Luvdisc fuss and fret around her, still too nervous to take the plunge.[break][break]

they’d gotten the wrong man for the job. he tried saying as much to the people by the docks, but had barely gotten past the i’m not—, when he’d found himself with a faceful of flippers and an armful of assorted scuba equipment. they had corralled him into the diving gear and off to the water, without granting him even a second to gather his wits — or verify his identity.

the memo they’d gotten, as far as he had heard, was for a dark-haired, tall and well-built man who was supposed to have been here an hour earlier; apparently, they were so short-handed they’d decided getting two out of four descriptors right was good enough.

they hadn’t sent him off alone, at least.

the young woman by the water’s edge offers him a wan smile as he dips his feet into the (lukewarm, thankfully) water. around her, a school of luvdisc has swarmed, squeaking in plaintive distress. it’s a hard sound to listen to. nagi feels his sense of self-preservation — the voice of reason in his head telling him to wait for tall-dark-and-missing-in-action to arrive — bend, then snap.

he lets his own luvdisc out into the water — watching for a quiet moment as the little fish swims in a furious circle around her peers before joining their chorus of distress. steeling himself, he summons every ounce of misplaced, paper-thin bravado he can, and turns to luka.

“should we…” he trails off, gesturing out to the open water. “... we shouldn’t keep them waiting too long.”

“Eh?”

Luka blinks and turns to her companion, her gaze vague and unfocused. With a shake of her head it sharpens, summer green and reflecting her concern for the Luvdisc, with just a glimmer of her own self doubt.[break][break]

“Yeah, yes! S-sorry! I was just, um. Thinking…”[break][break]

The chirping of her Luvdisc becomes more urgent. [break][break]

“Okay, okay!” She turns to her companion with a sheepish smile, apologies heavy on her tongue. “I’d love to um, do proper introductions and all…but I’m Luka! A-and you’re right, I think we’d better hurry. These guys won’t let me hear the end of it otherwise.”[break][break]

It’s spoken with affection as the fishies swarm around her feet. Luka adjusts her BCD and fiddles with her mask and then, employing a singular braincell, makes the decision to release her Milotic into the water as well.[break][break]

Luka slips from the dock and into the water as quietly as a needle through lace. Her swimming, however, is not as elegant, but she manages well enough before she loops her arms around her Milotic and pulls herself up.[break][break]

She feels much more confident sitting on Madeleine’s back. Her serpentine body cuts gracefully through the water and circles around the Luvdisc school once, before they come to a stop in front of Nagi.[break][break]

“Do you want a ride? I bet we’ll get there faster on Madeleine, and she’ll be better at finding the Luvdisc anyways. Plus we should, like…save our strength and stuff, right?” [break][break]

“nagi.” awkward, meet awkward. “it’s, uh, nice to meet you.”[break][break]

he lands with a splash, descending clumsily into the water without any of luka's finesse. his luvdisc bumps at his elbow as soon as the ripples subside, insistent and impatient, with every intention of tugging him by the sleeve of the wetsuit and dragging him headlong through the deep in search of the missing school.[break][break]

she’s saved from having to become a plow horse by luka — her single, resourceful braincell already pulling more weight than nagi’s entire being.[break][break]

nagi bobs his head in thanks at luka and her milotic in turn. one hand comes to rest atop madeleine’s shimmering scales a cautious distance away from luka in front. in his other, he raises a small compass; someone had strapped it on him amidst the rush to the water, fastening it so tight he feels the fabric dig into the jutting bone of his wrist when he flexes it. [break][break]

“the school was last seen heading south, fleeing from the distortion.” [break][break]

he points in the indicated direction, the compass needle swinging as he shifts. [break][break]

“should we head there first?”
