Eastward, past Lilycove and near the League’s own seat of power, the crater containing Sootopolis City lies covered by the dense canopy of a gigantic Tree of Life – whatever may be happening beneath being completely hidden from the prying eyes. Here, however, in the lower districts of Slateport City, the situation some of those few who left Sootopolis behind now find themselves in is all too obvious, and they can be found among those who make their way to the ever-packed soup kitchen.

Volunteering among those serving the food on this particular early spring day is a man most perhaps wouldn’t expect to see at such a place; one who often appears in ads for the bank he runs and who is known to have made donations to help with the Sootopolis relief efforts in the past. A man like him could stop at giving exuberant amounts of money to charities, but he doesn’t. Why?

In a way, Mòrag missed this.

Much as the League might try to pretend they were doing their best, Mòrag had seen with her own eyes and felt on her own skin the extent of their negligence, far more concerned with image than reality. Such was the conduct of all entities that had accumulated such power.

Which was why she enjoyed being down here in the soup kitchen, in the midst of the poorer and unfortunate, doing her part to help. It was a small thing, certainly not nearly as grandiose as her operation in Galar, but it brought her a modicum of satisfaction nonetheless. And so there she was, serving soup to those in need.

But there was one person on her mind that day, someone quite close by. Next to her, Martín Del Mar was there serving soup as if he were just any other person, despite the fact that that could not be further from the truth. Her initial instinct was that of revulsion. Corporate types had ever grated on her nerves, and to see one here pretending he was anything other than a greedy bastard irritated her so.

That would eventually give way to curiosity, however. It wasn’t as if there was a camera crew here, so the possibility of a mere PR stunt wasn’t as high. More and more time passed, and she finally asked the question on her mind.

“Tell me, Mr. Del Mar.” Her tone and conduct spoke to a well-educated Galarian woman, although he would surely be able to tell that her politeness was not genuine, “You could surely donate a lion’s share of funds to any charity of your choosing and be done with it, and people would certainly laud you as a generous and good man. Why, then, have you chosen to spend your time here? Perhaps you are simply bored?”
