the building is coming along surprisingly quick. it feels like just yesterday that she received the call. she remembers it almost too vividly. the way her body stilled or how her blood ran cold at the sound of a familiar voice. her skin crawls slightly beneath the memory and irritation claws at her nerves.

opening the doors is almost like wiping the mind clean. she takes a hand to the memories and thoughts and simply shoves them back down into cluttered boxes. they'll sit in the dark and beg to be opened later on. the begging goes unanswered.

she lingers in the lobby with an awkwardness clinging to scarred shoulders. it hangs with a certain heaviness she detests. and even without it, she simply... wouldn't know where to start looking. she hasn't seen him in years and time has eroded his face from her mind. only the name and the friendship of families remains. and when he comes, he'll find her looking more and more like a lost puppy as seconds tick into minutes.

[break][break] A gavel snapped against a desk, paperwork compiled, envelopes sent to the guarantors. It all happened so swiftly — he didn't have a choice in the matter. Not like he ever did, or expected to. His inheritance was largely a matter of politics and even though the absence of his parents hovered over his head like a scythe, there was hardly anything he could do about it.

[break][break] They meet at a neutral location. After so many years apart, they're practically strangers.

[break][break] Jayden dons his public persona Michail, dress shoes snapping against the concrete. The formal attire is uncomfortable on him, not because of the outfit itself but because of what it means. The dress shirt and slacks are part of his every-day attire, but the badge hanging around his neck is not, neither is the badge that reads Michail Volkov. Today is one of the few days where he's a Rocket, where he has to shed his comfortable snake skin for finely pressed silk.

+ she turns at her name on instinct. the voice doesn't sound familiar. actually, has she ever heard him speak? flashes of a little boy and girl staring at each other from across the room rise in short lived sequences.

she flushes slightly at the outstretched coffee. kind, she notes almost pleasantly. the son of her father's friend being welcoming and polite is, admittedly, a welcome change to the predesigned notion she placed on him. the brief mental apology of judgement passing too quickly rises and falls in time with heartbeat.

"oh, thank you," she murmurs. lips quirk upward into an awkward smile as she gingerly takes the cup from him. "that's very nice of you."

and god, it's a perfect cup of coffee. she takes one, two, three sips before lowering it. the warmth against her fingers feels like a lifeline against uncertainty, against the past. she can still feel her father's presence looming in shadows. it still tries to claw more jagged scars into her skin.

is it her father's shadows, or his? if illeana looks closely, she may see the flicker of images at the corner of her vision but as soon as she looks towards it, they will disappear. the ghost specialist doesn't seem to have his pokemon on him, but they always seem to be peeking at the corner of his vision. somehow.

[break][break] there is a whistle of wind that sounds eerily like the laughter of a passing ghost type — a sound that is comforting, probably, only to jayden himself.

[break][break] "i should be thanking you," he replies, dipping his head. "the board is thankful for your assistance." a pause. "as am i." a flicker of a smile — though, not a real one, a professional one pleated into the corner of his mouth. his father was many things, a businessman among them, and he had passed on similar traits to his son.

[break][break] his head tilts at her words. 'well?' flashes of images speed past him — blood, claws, screams. the echoes of kanto ring against his skin, making his own scars throb uncomfortably. he says none of these things, instead, "well enough, and you?"

[break][break] jayden leads them away from prying ears and towards a small walkway. rustboro city is nothing like sootopolis. the streets are unfamiliar and uncomfortable, cobblestone streets that quarry away into stocky buildings. there are no shadows to hide in like slateport, or the familiarity of his comrades as in sootopolis. still, this is where the corporation has decided to make it's imprint.

+ skittering shadows, hidden grins, and fading snickers are a comforting presence for both of them, it would seem. her head turns at the sound. and eyes search for something near and far, here yet not. she finds nothing, just as jayden did before. somehow, it makes her skin come to life with a vengeance. the on edge feeling never strays too far. no, it always lurks beneath layers of scar tissue and simmers to a boil with paranoia.

praise settles into the high cheekbones of a smile, coloring them a soft pink. "it was nothing, really." she lets out a tinkering sort of laugh. it exists as a bell chime or a caged bird whistling soft tunes to pass the time. "you, along with the board, did most of the work." and she pushed behind the scenes for something she... hopes doesn't become a stain on her conscience.

knowing her father, his connections... it leaves a small sense of dread etched into her bones.

she follows behind him quietly, heels clicking comfortably against pavement. the lab coat had been shed for this meeting and in its place, a soft peach dress. some scars poke out from the hem, drawing little constellations across skin. and when she turns to look over her shoulder, searching for something she can't find, the biggest one of them all stretches and coils with her spine. the question of her wellbeing, alone, makes the skin there crawl and burn.

"well enough," she murmurs. the smile she wears pulls a little tighter, unwilling to mingle into her eyes. talk of the building's completion offers a subtle lifeline and she grabs onto it with white knuckles. "is it? damn, your construction team works fast, huh?" her memory tries to recall the timespan but it's distracted. she asks anyway, sparing a curious glance in his direction. "how long was the timeline of projected completion?"

much like him, it seems that illeana is just a product of her environment. for this moment, jayden is grateful for it. he would much rather her company than some of a stuffy board director or his father's old business contacts. he nods briefly in agreement before leading her through the streets towards the headquarters.

[break][break] shortly, they will come a tall building just nearly furnished in the edge of rustboro's busy streets. he holds the door open for her, as a gentleman should.

[break][break]they may be childhood friends - if it could even be called that - but jayden doesn't know her well enough to see the rigidness etched into the corners of her tight smile. he takes her words for how they are, believing her.

[break][break] "not mine," he supplies. "your father's." or at least, the money that her father had given had gone towards it. he seems to contemplate her response, "a couple of months? they had started proceedings before i arrived in hoenn again."

+ mentions of her father turn her into porcelain. stiff, rigid, easily breakable. and how can she, his lowly daughter, possibly defile his image with a friend's son? she can't... not unless she wants familiar punishment. she can feel it now, laced into dermal layers of skin. phantom sensations haunt her even in the busy streets of rustboro. she despises it.

"makes sense," she murmurs. there's a cryptic tone to her voice now. "when father wants something, he gets it."

she meets the tilt of his head with one of her own. confusion slowly bleeds into skin. surely he means her father, right? her actions mean little compared to his demands, his money, his power. skin begins to buzz with life, crawling beneath open air and clothes. the hem of her dress isn't enough armor. it doesn't protect her from reaches in a region so far away. and it certainly doesn't protect her from still dancing on strings to avoid more scars.

"i suppose there's no one more influential than a man with money." she thinks of FERNANDO SILPH, of Remiel Calcifet, of the power they wield with cold indifference. the sentiment rings truer when you've experienced it for yourself, when you've always been a pawn in the hands of commanding men. when father wants something, he gets it. the irony strikes jayden quickly — how funny it was that they could be so different from one another, yet the same. it was almost as if they'd been abridged from the same path, yet torn away at the last possible moment.

[break][break] ".. do you like him? your father, i mean." jayden was not something if not blunt. yet, he couldn't help but be pinched by curiosity. she spoke of her father not with the eagerness that he might expect. mr. reyes was a man that his own father had respected — or at least entrusted shares of his business to, on some level.

[break][break] he pauses as he considers her words further. "i'm not sure if i've ever thought about it that way."

[break][break] for him, it was not a matter of prestige. when you had more important things to worry about - death, murder, expectation - it seemed like all the other petty concerns of the world fell away. he wonders if SILAS BLACKWELL had been rich — or had he been able to command the organization with something more complex than money. and declan walsh?

[break][break] he wonders if illeana reyes has ever had the pleasure of meeting a man like Calem Pollet. he hopes she never has to.

[break][break] jayden leads them to the front desk, where there is a manilla folder. inside it contains the financials, the plans for the completion of the property, and an outline for the first quarter. he hands it over to her.

it's firm, unwavering... a stern answer to a curious question. it will, perhaps, get her into trouble but what else could her father possibly do?

and then, a sigh follows. it carries the weight of childhood memories she would rather forget than relive. beneath it all comes a soft admittance, one she's been holding onto for a decade now.

"i would kill him if the opportunity came."

somehow... it's freeing to whisper such a concept to another soul.

she doesn't offer more insight. instead, she mulls over the words in silence, chewing on them until they lose their taste.

it's only after the manilla folder is in her hands for longer than a minute that she opens her mouth.

"everyone's persuasive in one way or another," she offers. there's a hint of a smile lingering at the edges, as if she's comparing her own tactics to those around her. perhaps his method is better than hers, even. somehow, she wouldn't mind finding out.

"with the right motivation, anything can be accelerated."

she thinks, in some way, he understands what she's poking at.

[break][break] it is surprising but as most things are — jayden tucks it away. his own family is not something that he likes to openly discuss, so he assumes the same for illeana. it is surprising that she would want to kill such a prominent figure like casper reyes. even more surprising, if she would be able to do it.

[break][break] but there's a time and place for this kind of conversation — perhaps now is not the time for it. he's glad to hear the conversation shift into something more light-hearted and he nods, as he leads his way down a hallway and towards the laboratory. he pushes one of the glass doors open, which still has blue tape surrounding it, and waits for her to enter first.

he leads her through the halls and she peeks around at the progress. it's coming along nicely, almost ready for full operations. a project well deserving of the time he's poured into it... that much she's certain of.

and as he opens the door for her, she flashes a grateful smile before stepping in.

"a woman of charm?" a light laugh follows. "does that mean you've heard some things about me?"

she's not quite sure which reputation precedes her but hopefully it's one of the better ones.

nevertheless, her smile widens into a coy territory.

"i suppose that would depend on the kind of business man you'd like to be."

being kind doesn't stop terrible things from happening. not to her and not to anyone else. sometimes, she wishes it did.

he's resourceful, intelligent, kind. he'll go far, she knows.

her smile grows, edges curling into her cheeks.

people of their background don't exactly get a choice, sometimes. it's either the family business or nothing...

"yeah, i originally started out as a silph co intern with no clue what kind of work i wanted to pursue."

and regardless of FERNANDO SILPH shaping her into the woman she is today, there was still an anxious part to the path. the questioning thoughts never quite left. even here, even now... she's still uncertain.

[break][break] regardless of their childhood, jayden is unaware of any personal attachment that illeana has to either brother. that's where their similarities - as parallel as they may be - die off. his last memory of the silph ceo resulted in jayden knocking him off a beam and into uncertain waters. it had, fortunately for jayden, resulted him in a badge.
