it's not a threat, persay, but a pokemon rolls into the path. at first, jayden barely notices it.

[break][break] it's only when hesus darts forwards with a screech that he notices it. jayden blinks with alarm as the pokemon snaps his jaws around the poor cherrubi — or at least he might, had jayden not a throw pokeball immediately before.

[break][break] by the time jayden holds the pokeball in his hands again, he stares at the reflection curiously. hm, a cherrubi. for some reason, he is reminded of luka chêne .

irony strikes him like a hot, iron fist.

[break][break] he likes ghosts, but maybe the ghost of luka chêne is not quite what he's expecting. either way, as the togepi stumbles forward with wide arms and a carefree trill, jayden can't help himself. he can't say no.

[break][break] he picks the pokemon up in his arms and cradles it, placing a pokeball gently on it's head.

not soon after, a shimmering nidoran runs up to him. jayden tilts his head at it. he knows that he owns a nidoking, but perhaps he could use a kind friend.

[break][break] the rocket watches as the nidoran runs circles with alako. the two shiny pokemon play a game of cat and mouse with each other, and jayden allows it, if only for a moment. he snaps a picture on his phone, and makes note to send it to mint frost , who would probably find such a thing cute.

the wild fletching soars through the air above him, and jayden nearly misses it, if not for the faint shimmer of it's wings. still, he doesn't seem to have any interest in it and lets it on his way as he picks up the pokeball from the floor from earlier.

[break][break] jayden continues down the path, hands in his pockets. the shadows from the night are strangely comforting in their own way, as ironic as that would sound. normally, darkness is enough to make anyone shiver in discomfort; but there is something about the dark that eases his thoughts, smooths away the sharp, panicked edges of his nightmares.

the azumarill that wanders onto the path isn't something that he cares for either. water-types may have been @rowan's speciality, but it certainly wasn't his.

[break][break] jayden continues to walk down the path of the safari, but against his better judgements, he lets his thoughts get the better of them. flashes of what it was like in kanto, the haunting knowledge of what he'd left behind, the aching sensation in his heart that he'd thought he'd left long behind. no. he wasn't going to allow himself to think like that. he didn't have a right - people like him didn't deserve love.

[break][break] for a moment, something grips him. he pauses, crumpling to the floor. his two umbreon dart forward to catch up with him, nosing his elbow. his face drops into his knees.

[break][break] the shadows envelop him.

at the end of a long road is seemingly nothing but swathes of darkness. that is, until a beast appears at the end of it.

[break][break] the horse that shows in the distance looks oddly like a pokemon from a dreamscape — bright blue flames that encapsulate milky white, a gentle maw, and a deep gaze that follows jayden as it pads closer to him.

[break][break] the ponyta brushes up against him, nuzzling him, and jayden is startled. but the pokemon seems to befit no harm, so jayden decides to capture it. perhaps he can observe it some more, back at home, where it's safe.
