iseult gave him a stare with a touch of tentativeness. a look that figured they’d get flagged down. it wouldn’t be much of a problem for her, but she knew her friend was more strapped for cash. a fine might be devastating.

smiling at the owner and giving an appreciative nod, she approached their small vessel. after a moment, with no expressive cue of meaning, she decided on a name: ”mauvaise idée.”

at danny’s question, she shook her head.

”cezanne is not easily intimidated. he was bred and trained to be fearless.”

the ninetales was soundless as it boarded the boat after its girl. it would follow her to the ends of the earth, protective as anything or anyone could be. iseult went to work securing the eggs as well. when they were safe, she looked up.

”so, how do you do this?”

iseult smiled back at his enthusiasm, knowing.

then, as he talked, her smile began to falter.

”you have done this before, right?”

it sounded like maybe the answer was no, he hadn’t—but it couldn’t be too difficult to figure out. she peered past him at the dash curiously.

”i’ve never driven a car, either.” nor had she been to an arcade.

he hit the gas, and they were off. definitely much faster than the ferry. nearly white hair blew off her shoulder and went wild in the wind. she reached up to retie her lavender ribbon at the back of her head.

in truth, this is probably much easier than driving a car because there's little to no risk of hitting anyone else. there are other boats but he's pretty sure they're far away enough that he could swerve to avoid hitting them if he needs to.[break][break]

after a few minutes, lilycove disappears behind them as they venture into the open blue waters of hoenn.[break][break]

the boat slows down a bit, allowing for a more enjoyable trip.[break][break]

"wanna steer for a bit?"

the wind whipped her hair up, pulling several strands from where they were tied back loosely near the nap of her neck. as the boat slowed down, and james offered the wheel over to her, she hesitated. then, a smile crept onto her face, and she decided it sounded fun.

”sure. why not.”

grinning in a carefree manner that was usually unlike her, she stood at the helm, looking towards the distance.

”my father had a sailboat,” she called behind her, ”but i rarely went out with him on it. the ocean used to scare me.” it still did, actually, but it wasn’t enough to keep her off of it nowadays.

after a moment, she remarked, ”this is easy!” at least out there.

it's nice to see her grinning in a way he never would've expected to see. it makes him grin as well, sharing her joy of navigating relatively calm waters.[break][break]

his head tilts as he listens to her words over the buffeting winds.[break][break]

what changed? her smile wavered as she focused on an answer, realizing she didn’t have much of one to give him.

”i guess i just got older, maybe,” she eventually called over the wind. they weren’t exactly talking about the bogeyman, though.

”i mean, i never stopped believing the ocean was full of monsters. just, at some point, they didn’t scare me so much anymore. i think maybe learning to battle helped.”

though she’d never been a deeply dedicated trainer, competence had been a requirement growing up, and it had given her an extra sense of security.

iseult looked over at him briefly before directing her gaze ahead of them quickly, as though something might jump out at them in the middle of open water.

”not sure that i agree with you there.”

she didn’t know there were about 3500000000000 fish in the sea, but she could guess there were more of them than mammals.

a smile followed. ”of course. battling’s easy enough.” maybe she was half-decent, but that still wasn’t terrible. she could hold her own against the average crook—fingers crossed. ”self-defense was a very important thing for me to learn, according to my father.”

”what about you? do you battle?”

she wasn’t sure why she’d assumed any differently. james was a nerd, after all, and a busy one at that. he probably didn’t have time to improve on his other skills.

”hm. well, at least you have onigiri to keep you safe.” this region was full of surprises, after all.

passing a glance back in his direction again, she suggested, ”i could teach you.”

the excitement behind his question is almost palpable. perhaps one of the reasons why he never decided to venture into the realm of battling is because of self-doubt. but now, with the prospect of being taught, he finds it easier to accept.[break][break]

”yes!” she’d just said she could.

she was busy, but not too busy to help out her friend james. after all, hoenn was a crazy place to not know how to defend oneself. this was only the right thing to do.

this is perhaps the only way to really know whether he's fit for battling or not. after training with a capable person like iseult, if he sucks, he sucks, and there's no changing that.[break][break]

”good! i’ll take it easy on you,” she assured. from the sounds of it, his a-game would still be lackluster—but everyone had to start somewhere.

mossdeep was in sight, and iseult gradually became less confident at the helm, the closer they drew to the dock. cezanne paced past to situate himself at the nose of the boat, anticipating being back on land.

”maybe you should take the wheel,” she suggested. that way, she wouldn’t be responsible for any damage.
