Another day, another trip to route 117. Though this wasn't just a calming stroll: Hideo was here to check on the progress of his Gracidea seeds. Considering he didn't have the assurance of someone else watching over his plant, Hideo had to check on it every so often. He did leave a Pokemon there to keep an eye on it - his Appletun, who normally kept watch of his berry garden.

He could let his Ribombee watch over his other garden in the meanwhile. Little guy loved those berries.

It was only a short distance off the route, in a patch of soft soil his Zarude had found. He could already hear the happy yapping of his Appletun, Hideo waving as he approached. "Everything going alright, Smith?" he asked.

The increase in happy yipping, he took as a "yes".

Hideo could also hear his Lilligant bounding towards the plant. She was here as his usual Pokemon-escort, but she'd seemed particularly interested in checking on the plant. Hideo didn't object when she insisted on coming along.

An energetic Pokemon, she was. And oddly friendly, despite her aggression when he'd found her. It was hard to get a read on her - in part because he didn't actually know what Pokemon she was. She felt kind of like a Lilligant, but she was a lot taller and shaped differently from the ones he knew.

Thistle was the calmer of his two Pokemon, but every now and then she put her little mantis foot down and demanded some Sy time. So that’s how he found himself rocking a tank-top and out traipsing around in the woods, following his Fomantis as she went about her day doing… Thistle things.

It wasn’t like she twisted his arm. The sunlight streaming through motes of dust was nice, and there was a gentle breeze drifting across the nearby pond. Thistle seemed to be lost in her own world, investigating nearby flowers; perhaps Hideo’s Ribombee could sense his Fomantis’ sweet scent in the air; Sy definitely could, though sometimes it made him sneeze.

Suddenly, Thistle’s head snapped up, and she darted off-- though with her little legs, ‘darting’ was a bit of an over exaggeration. Sy headed after her, cutting through a copse of trees to come out near Hideo and his strange, very human Lilligant, whom Thistle was currently… rushing straight up to.

“Woah!” Sy said, snatching his Fomantis up with gentle hands-- she looked very small in his large grasp. “Careful, girl! Can’t be running up to strangers, especially ones that look like they could drop-kick you!”

The Lilligant ceased her playful dancing, immediately facing towards the sound of an approaching Pokemon. She smoothly shifted beside Hideo, ready to intercept whatever was coming; Hideo had noticed the sweet smell before hearing it approach.

And then she saw what it was: a Fomantis, not unlike the one she'd seen at Hideo's camp. She bent at the waist, her body arching as her head lined up with the Fomantis, keeping her balance despite her cross-legged stance.

She maintained eye-contact with the Fomantis, even as a trainer appeared to pick it up. Still, she stood there, making sure this person wasn't here with bad intentions.

"It's alright," Hideo said, both to the trainer and his own Pokemon, "No harm, no foul." It was far from the first time he'd encountered someone out of the woods - heck, he'd been on that side more than once.

He took out a pail of water, his Appletun guiding him to the fledgling plant with the sound of its voice. Hideo made sure to pour plenty of water, both for the plant and for his overjoyed Appletun.

"So what'cha doing coming out of the forest like that?" he asked, "Other than following your Pokemon, I mean." A bit of small talk wouldn't hurt.

His Lilligant was still staring at the Fomantis, though she was bobbing from side to side. More playful than moments ago.

Hideo’s Lilligant definitely looked like it was ready to jump into battle. Compared to that, Sy’s team was a couple of babies, though he was definitely considering getting one of those child leash-and-harness sets for Thistle.

Thistle kept her eyes locked with the Lilligant even as Sy picked her up, holding her gently in one hand like she was a fragile flower bound to crumble.

“This your garden plot?” Sy asked, watching Hideo and his Appletun go about their tending duties. “Don’tcha get worried about it, out here in the woods?” His mama and granny’d had gardens, and sometimes they’d taken better care of their tomatoes and hostas than their children.

“Oh, Thistle wanted to go for a walk and if I’m not keeping an eye on her, she’ll get into trouble,” Sy said, tone affectionate, letting the little Fomantis jump to the ground. She ran back up to the Lilligant and shook her little scythes. Play.

The little Appletun yipped in delight as Hideo doused it and the plant in water. The boy made sure both his Pokemon and the plant got enough; he’d gotten fairly used to gardening after keeping up his own garden for a while. Especially when this little Pokemon was the one monitoring them almost the entire time.

“It’s more of a temporary thing,” Hideo said. “One of my Pokemon showed me this was a good spot to plant these seeds I had, and they were on point the last time they did that, so I’m trusting their judgment here.” He let up the pail - he didn’t want to drown his plant. Or his Pokemon. “My main garden’s closer to where I’m living.”

The Lilligant once again bent down, her head matching the Fomantis’s in height. Her leaf-like arms shook up and down, mimicking its little scythes as best as floppy leaves could. The message would be clear: Yes

“It’s always nice to take a walk through the woods. I used to never get the chance to do it. Now I’ve done it so many times that I practically know the woods better than my own house!” An exaggeration, of course, but it was night and day compared to when he was stuck at home. Helped that he lived in the woods of the route next to this one.

“And I know what it’s like to have Pokemon you gotta keep an eye on.” Not literally for him, but a few of his own were active. And mischievous

Though that mischief did have a habit of going well for him; it was how he met John Sullivan , after all.

“Ooooh,” Symon said as understanding dawned on him; for all his flowery Pokemon, he certainly was no master gardener. Hideo seemed to have a good grasp on the situation. “So is this little guy special?” He asked, hovering over and pointing down at the stem sprouting out of the earth; he did not recognize the fledgeling Gracidea for the wonder that it was. “What do you normally grow?”

The Lilligant bent double, face coming close to Thistle’s; it was an amazing act of mobility for a Pokemon-- it would’ve been so for a human, too- because his Fomantis was so short. Thistle waved her little scythes and did a pirouette, perhaps trying to imitate the graceful and lilting moves of the Spinning Pokemon.

"I think so," Hideo said, his Appletun lying down beside the stem, grinning as if it'd just eaten the most delicious meal moments ago. "It's supposed to be a Gracidea Flower. 'least I was told they were Gracidea seeds. Pretty rare flower, from what I hear."

And potentially connected to a mythical Pokemon, though he didn't recall which. "Dunno how long it'll take to bloom, but I hear they smell really nice! And they look nice too." Not that the latter mattered to him.

"I usually just grow practical stuff, like berries. Helps to have a nice source of food around that I don't gotta forage or fish for." Helped that his Pokemon made sure his food grew quickly - especially his Zarude. "Do you grow stuff too? I find it pretty relaxing to take care of a garden." A nice break from training Pokemon or exploring routes.

Meanwhile, on the more active side of things, the Lilligant giggled as she watched the Fomantis spin. Once her spin-partner finished their spin, she joined in with her own, though she did it with slightly more flair: she spun with her body perpendicular to her leg, almost in the shape of a T, returning to her cross-legged stance immediately afterwards with no sign of stumbling, even once more lowering he head to the Fomantis's level.

“Huh, a Gracidea flower,” Sy says, and it’s almost like you can see the gears in his head whirring as he thinks. “Never heard of them… but Hoenn’s neat like that. The tropical climate lets you grow lots of things that aren’t here naturally.” He’s lived in Hoenn his whole life, and he loved his home region, even for all the chaos she produced. Which was a lot.

“Ooh, berries. Sometimes I get so used to buying them in stores, I forget people actually have to grow them, hah.” His grandparents spent so much time in their garden, but yet Sy had never imagined it as relaxing. Maybe because they spent a lot of time yelling at him to stop playing in it when he was little? “I have a couple succulents, but that’s about all I think I’d manage to keep alive.”

Thistle was absolutely enamored with Hideo’s Lilligant, and attempted, to the best of her ability, to emulate the ballerina spin the Spinning Pokemon portrayed-- which was impossible for a little creature with fused legs, so instead, Thistle did more of a flappy, flailing turn.
