For lack of better wording, there was… a baby boom.

And that baby boom had resulted in so many people looking for, and requesting to borrow, Ditto.

(How does one even breed with a faceless blob? Animé logic, that’s what!)

Word of the hatchery that had opened somewhere had gotten out, and so therefore there were kilometric waiting lists from the general public asking to borrow a Ditto—

~~Why did he have the feeling they were going to be basically ‘whored out’ until the end of time?!~~

Now, while Alexei himself wasn’t actively looking for one, he was… well, things had gotten out of hand so here he was down at Slateport City, helping to quell the tide for the pink blob.

But where was he even going to start?!

Did they need to be fed lucky eggs or something?!

Coincidence or twist of fate?

Whatever one may call it, the truth is that Mars had not been aware of the chaos currently being caused by the sudden outbreak of mischievous Ditto. See, it being where he works, Slateport’s upper district is a place where the banker spends much of his time, and such being the case, he just so happens to find himself caught up in the middle of all this right after having had lunch with one of his business partners.

”What the hell?”

”Mister del Mar, it would seem that Ditto are causing trouble in the area.” His assistant informs him when joining him. A stoic yet pretty young woman clad in a fashionable pantsuit, in her hands the small shopping bag that is likely to contain the item Mars had all too recently asked her to retrieve – Eggant Berry Pokéblocks, of all things.

”Yeah, I can see that.” While there’s mild sarcasm in his voice, it’s accompanied by a sigh, because the words are spoken just as a nearby Ditto that had been disguised as a sign TRANSFORMS into an almost perfect replica of the Chansey by his assistant’s side. ”Let’s get back to the office.”

They’re only a few blocks away, but now Mars is really starting to regret having decided to walk here since it had been such a nice day.

It just so happened Alexei was walking, accompanied by his own Chansey, cute pink ~~fat~~ Pokémon waddling beside him keeping an eye out just in case they stumbled upon a Ditto…

Little did he know that they were about to literally walk into one!

There was another Chansey (well, a Ditto-Chansey but we’re not going to go into details here) that picked up something that had tipped over… and then proceeded to chuck it in Alexei’s direction.

Wait, what the hell?!

“What the—” he exclaimed as he saw what appeared to be a fallen… pole flung in their direction!

“SHIT!” he shouted as he barely had enough time to get out of the way before his own Chansey, seeing the incoming danger quickly swing into action and began chucking Egg Bombs at the… at the not!Chansey.

What in the fresh hell was happening down here?!

Unfortunately, the Chansey accompanying Alexei was blinded by a bout of sudden rage, and so the Egg Bomb attacks were being flung indiscriminately.

It happens just as Mars recognizes the figure of Fortree’s gym leader in the distance: the transformed Ditto grabs the egg held in its Chansey pouch and flings it towards Alexei Ivanov, exploding the moment it hits the ground. Then another, and another, as if the Not!Chansey had an endless supply of EGG BOMBS.

”Alexei! Are you okay?!” Mars calls out while reaching into the pocket of his suit’s jacket, retrieving a Luxury Ball from which a sleek black Greninja is released. ”Phy. Block.”

The Ninja Pokémon is both obedient and quick to act, a MAT BLOCK being raised to protect those around him from the EGG BOMBS that are now going everywhere. Clearly, if they want to get out of here safely, they’ll first have to bring the Ditto down.

His Chansey was on the warpath now, chucking Egg Bomb after Egg Bomb at the Not!Chansey which was now engaged in a ‘mirror battle’ as they were now both chucking the same attack at each other.

What the fresh hell?!

“Mars?!” he exclaimed, watching as a black Greninja emerged and put up a defensive screen around them.

“I’m fine, but what the hell is going on here?!” he continued, peeking over and watching his Chansey duke it out with the Not!Chansey, trapped in an endless Egg Bomb battle… what in the world was going on…

“Where did that other Chansey come from? Do you know?” he followed up afterward.

Apparently, the gym leader is as confused about all this as he is, and Mars is not sure if that’s a silver lining or a bad thing. Then again, strange things occurring when least expected is as if part of life’s routine when living in Hoenn, and so, as surprised and worried as he may be about the onslaught of exploding eggs, he isn’t surprised enough to have been shocked into a useless stupor.

”Pretty sure that’s a Ditto.” He had seen it transform when it had spotted his assistant’s own Chansey, after all, and as annoying as that may be, at least it means they know exactly what they’re dealing with. It’s why Mars then turns his attention to the woman. ”Ariel, if you would.”

She nods. ”Of course, Mister del Mar. Lenora, sing us a song.”

Lenora is, of course, the name of the woman’s Chansey, and it’s with a soft and lovely voice that she begins to SING a sweet lullaby that is bound to the Ditto to sleep, hopefully ending all their troubles on the spot.

Because he had no qualms about catching it and bringing it over to the Rangers, at least—lost and found, and all that. But then again… he didn’t have a Ditto of his own, and so was very tempted by that notion…

Fucked up, yes, but a Ditto is still a Ditto, and a Ditto always has value – especially as of late. Mars may have two of them among his own collection, yet the prospect of another is still appealing enough for him to speak his next words without need for much consideration. ”Only one way to find out if it belongs to someone, right?”

He whistles then, a short and sharp sound, and the moment he does, all too fast and all too dangerous WATER SHURIKENS are sent towards the “Chansey” by the drowsy Greninja that diligently answers his command. Physignathus is called back so he won’t be put to sleep by Lenora’s song, and having already done his job, the rest is up to Mars and Mars alone.

A Luxury Ball is thrown with surprisingly great aim, and in a flash of light, the transformed Ditto disappears from sight.

The sphere wobbles from left to right, the light at its centre blinking while awaiting to confirm the capture…

Amber eyes watch to go, and while Mars’ attention is completely fixed on the Luxury Ball, his assistant tells her own Chansey to help Alexei Ivanov’s with a healing LIFE DEW.

He let the other man take things into his own hands, watching as a Luxury Ball was flung towards the Not!Chansey, and the black Greninja was recalled back in order to avoid the effects of the Singing from the other Chansey.

“Thank you,” he said in the assistant’s direction, watching as the other Chansey healed her own kind with Life Dew. Quite frankly, this was one of the weirder days he’d been down and out around Slateport, definitely.

(At least they weren’t in the middle of a kaiju fight or something. That would have been a thousand times worse.)

“Oh, if it breaks out, well…” he remarked, watching as the ball shook once, then twice—
