[break][break] last he had been here, there had been an incident that had called the gym leader away and they'd had to put the challenge on hold. something about the gym leader's injuries needing tending to, perhaps? either way, jayden had been supposed to return but with everything that happened in the capture of sootopolis city and the star soiree, there hadn't been the time. then, of course, there had been the matter of his own stabbing and his re-location back to kanto.

[break][break] jayden wore a badge with his name on it — his finger brushed the ink that had just dried. it read michail volkov.

This time, he was ready.

He was getting better with the set-up time, rather than having them set up just before the challenger got there—at least now, he was pretty sure that the obstacles were ready to go, and all he had to do was bring the challenger out to the aerial arena out back and get them straight into the air.

“Thanks, Ethan,” he said to the receptionist as he looked over—well, hello. That was a familiar face.

“Back at it?” he continued in the other man’s direction, before opening the door that led to the aerial outdoor arena.

“Let’s go, wouldn’t want to keep you too long,” he added a few moments afterward.

[break][break] not to mention that there weren't anyone else of note in the gym space.

[break][break] "yes," he said with a nod. what is it that people said? second time's the charm? "thank you for having me, sir."

[break][break] soon enough, the doors were pushed open and jayden was greeted with a gush of cool air. his dragapult is quick to sweep himself underneath him.

At the sight of the other’s Pokémon, he knew he would have to go with something that was lithe and fast enough to keep up with a Dragapult—considering that the draconid could suspiciously phase through objects but… was he seeing things, or something?

He had a Dreepy of his own, so he wasn’t too sure about—

Anyway.

Out the door and onto the open-air… well, it wasn’t so open air this time, because there were a series of aerial obstacles set up.

A few moments later, a familiar shape flew down close to where Alexei stood, and he then handed the other a pair of flying goggles.

“Okay, cliff notes—four-part obstacle course. Gotta showcase your natural flying, so our rides can’t use any kind of moves. This also includes navigation and precision.”

This time around, the ‘aerial Circus Charlie’ obstacle was the first part of the entire thing. While the rings weren’t on fire yet, they would be in a few moments.

“Oh, and for this first obstacle, try not to get burned…”

The sounds of flames catching alight echoed above them, as he snapped down his own flying goggles and climbed aboard his Noivern, Fenrir, who took to the air and waited for the other to join him up at the ‘starting point’.

“Race starts once you get up here and the whistle goes off!” he called down to the other.

[break][break] even disguised, jayden was a man of a few words.

[break][break] while it was a bit of a hindrance that pokemon couldn't use moves to aid their aerial masters, it made enough sense. why else have an obstacle course meant to highlight that of flying types, if the flying types themselves couldn't showcase their skills?

[break][break] his dragapult lifts into the air with ease, and jayden's pulls gloves onto his hands. he straps on the goggles as well, just for extra measure, waiting for the whistle to blow.

“Aha, there you are,” he called once the other had joined him in mid-air.

“Okay, first part of the obstacle course—get through the rings, and try not to get burned in the process! Also, watch out—they do swing at random times.”

This was, literally, aerial Circus Charlie, and he remembered the first time that he’d tested this with Melody Miro, he distinctly remembered her screaming at the obstacle itself and cracked a momentary grin.

“See you on the other side!” and a loud whistling noise signified that the first part of the course had begun!

Wasting no time, Alexei then flattened himself on his Noivern’s back and made for the first swinging hoops of flame—

Thank fuck he didn’t have long hair.

[attr="class","postbody"] little did Alexei Ivanov know, obstacle courses were not a stranger to jayden. dmitri had put him through his paces plenty enough when he'd been five.

[break][break] though, perhaps, being in the sky could change things.

[break][break] "take note," he reminded his dragapult as they soared through the air. sure enough, it was just as the gym leader said. some of the fiery hoops did swing, but as long as they judged the distance in advance, and ran through them fast enough, it should not have been an issue. "let's go."

[break][break] when the whistle sounds, they are off.

[break][break] vahagn's natural affinity to the air grants him the speed to glide forward, his form flickering briefly out of view, as he soars towards the hoops with ease. heat threatens to scald his human rider, but luckily, jayden had worn a flame-retardant suit so the damage, if any, was minimal. a piece of flame singed his hair as they swing through the first set of rings, aimed sideways.

(It was probably Claire. Ethan still had mercy on his fucking ass. Because who else would suggest to throw the flaming obstacle first in the line-up?!)

“Whoa, what the hell,” he hissed, very nearly getting the top of his hair singed as the hoop he flew through suddenly shifted to the left (and very nearly caught his jacket on fire).

I should really have a word with Claire! he thought as he looked across him to see how the other was handling the challenge—

[attr="class","postbody"] the first ring is visible in the distance, and jayden grips the scales of his pokemon's back as they soar through it. as the heat nears, his thoughts flash back to the first time that his father had set him on a course when he was five.

[break][break] golden rings gleaming in the dull flicker of their backyard. with a match, dmitri sets them alight — the flicker of flames dancing in his eyes, the heart-lurching feeling he felt in his flipping stomach as he flipped through them. the searing pain on his arms and back when he'd not run through them fast enough.

[break][break] “I think your head’s on fire!” he called out.

[break][break] jayden's thoughts are brought back to the present as Alexei Ivanov calls out to him. he blinks.

[break][break] "ah. thank you. " so it did. he pinched the bit of heat between his fingers to snuff the flame, and nods at the other as a thank-you measure.

[break][break] sure enough, as he trusts his dragapult to carry him through the loops, he glances towards their destination. how much farther was it, now?

Honestly, he was going to have a fucking word with Claire after this challenge was done.

(Never put her in charge of the obstacle set-up in the future, Alexei!)

To nobody’s surprise, he made it out at a much later time than Michail did.

“I hope you don’t mind getting wet for this next one.”

He’d taken maybe some inspiration from another Gym Leader’s obstacle for this, however this was going to be a new one for the course in question. While the way ahead looked clear for now—

Bursts of water (and mud!) at random intervals began to ricochet from multiple directions.

“Try not to get hit by the mud while you cross through!” he continued as he pointed across the way—which was now behaving like an erratic water fountain, only with more spurts of liquid mud. To complicate matters, there were also swinging logs…

“Let’s go!”

As the whistle cut through the air, he had to make sure that the goggles were slapped down—because visibility was going to get crazy because of the water (and mud) all around them.

[break][break] it doesn't occur to jayden right away, not when they're already zooming through yet another hoop encased by flame. he's not prepared for the rapid change in weather and the —

[break][break] he's stunned into silence (not that jayden was much of a talker much to begin with) when a mudball splatters itself across jayden's face. he veers his flyer upright and then wipes the mud off his face with a single swipe.

[break][break] "thank you for the warning."

[break][break] to another, this might seem like sarcasm. for jayden, it was genuine. though whether Alexei Ivanov could tell the difference was another matter entirely.

[break][break] "vagahn," he instructed, lowering his head to speak to the dragapult beneath him. "watch out for the mud and logs. be nimble." he lowers himself closer to the dragapult as they soar forward in a blur of light the second the next whistle blows.

The water mixing with mud obscured his view for a few moments—not to mention the fact that the swinging logs were there to knock them off-course (or worse, out of the air).

It was just his luck that a sudden burst of mud caught his goggles, and he came to a stop mid-air, the Noivern suddenly coming to a halt as he was hissing profanities, rubbing at the mud that had coated his goggles.

Once he’d gotten those clean, he was not surprised to see that the other had flown ahead—but they weren’t out of the woods yet.

One of the swinging ‘logs’ came barreling out from the left, attempting to unseat Michail as the challenger flew ahead.

[break][break] while jayden had many skills and more than enough training courtesy of his own rocket heritage, he could not be perfect. he couldn't see everything. he'd had aerial training before, but honestly, he was much more comfortable on land when he could see what was going on.

[break][break] it came at him too fast — at a breakneck speed, the wooden log came lunging for him and promptly knocked the ex-beast off his seat. his eyes widened briefly but pain blossomed in his side, palms burning from where they had brushed against his pokemon's scales in attempt to remain upright.

[break][break] luckily enough, his dragapult was more than capable to attend to his trainer. with a screech, the dual-type made an aerial swoop and a lunge, ducking beneath his trainer to scoop him up from the air before he met an untimely demise.

[break][break] "... thanks," jayden said, a bit breathily. he blinked against the sky, fingers gripping his dragapult's horns to steady himself. "c'mon. we're behind."

The only thing he registered was a loud, screeching noise coming from somewhere behind him—much tempted as he was to look over his shoulder, had he done that one of the other ‘logs’ that was swinging wildly in mid-air would’ve caught him and knocked him off, too.

His own Noivern let out a warning screech and took an abrupt barrel-roll that screwed with his perception for a few moments before righting their course again—clearing out the second obstacle.

Now that they were up on the third, he waited for the other to catch up before looking at the familiar ‘net crawl’, only done up in the air.

“After this obstacle there’s one more, not too far to go now!”

The Noivern then rocketed forward, straight towards a particular opening, eager to get through this obstacle.
