[attr="class","postbody"] by the time he gets to the top of the hill, violet and auburn stretch across the sky's horizon. the clouds drift lazily overhead, just moments away from disappearing into twilight. surprisingly, there was no one on the trail up ahead, which was a grateful reprieve from the festivities that mint frost had dragged him to as of late.

[break][break] his krokorok accompanies him. in the pokemon's mighty jaw is a bucket, and on his bag is a satchel of gardening supplies. while jayden may not always be privy to the knowledge of a botanist, rocket's library was very helpful in assisting him where his personal knowledge lacked. he walks over to the spot where he has planted the carrot seed, weeks ago, and has found that it has upheld rather well.

[break][break] around it, however, there are crystal sprouts from where a species threatens to invade. gloves in hand, jayden is quick to dispose of the weeds — they're not enough specimen to drag back to the lab, and would be more troublesome than useful. he tosses them in the pail, before tossing his gloves into it as well.

[break][break] so ingrained in his activities, he doesn't notice a person approaching.

[break][break] his body tenses inexplicably, body shooting forcibly up and then dipping his head.

[break][break] "i — apologies, sir."

[break][break] regardless of his feelings, THEO BECKETT 's position in the organization was one of respect. he demanded it, regardless of whatever demeanor that he held towards the boy in the moment.

[break][break] an older jayden might've flinched — would've waited for the tell-tale slap against his cheek. how dare he not say hello? "i... stepped by your office earlier. it was empty."

[break][break] you were in the lab. you seemed busy.

[break][break] instead, he says, "i'm well. glad to be back." a pause, as he cranes his head towards the other. "how are you?"

[break][break] jayden did not need a reminder of what it meant to cross the line, what it meant to make a consequence and have to serve for it. he has plenty of scars to remind them for him.

[break][break] still, whatever consequence his superiors could give him were nothing in comparison to the trauma of his own father. something tingles along his spine at the thought.

[break][break] water trickles along the soil as he pours nourishment over the budding plant.

[break][break] "it's what i know, sir."

[break][break] in a way, it was a comfort. hoenn was full of rules and regulations that he wasn't used to. he remembers the aimless nights after his parents' death, when he thought that rocket had disbanded. was that hurt - the one of being abandoned - easier than that of a blade against his skin? the crack of a snapped bone?

[break][break] no. it wasn't.

[break][break] "i have a question for you, sir." he finishes his work on the plant, placing his supplies down and deciding to stand beside the rocket admin. "underboss merlino informed me about fairburne." his head tilts. "i would like to know more."

[break][break] "i heard that she tried to kill one of our own." his lips purse. he and Rowan Wrynn were not as close as he was with perhaps gavin, but he was still a colleague. some might even say a friend. beyond that...

[break][break] "and i was at sootopolis when she betrayed us."

[break][break] why however, was a matter all on it's own.

[break][break] his gaze flickers downwards, catching the sight of discolored skin. politely, jayden looks away. it was no business of his what THEO BECKETT did in the lab, or otherwise.
