Kira brushed the skirt of her dress of as she took the hand of the man that offered it to her to assist her out of the boat. On the docks the wind from the ocean blew her hair in her face which caused her to frown. "Your things madam," the man offered her, her bag. He'd taken to addressing her so formally due to how she carried herself she supposed. She didn't mind. Ever since leaving her prison of a home she could afford to relax into what felt normal for once instead of constantly being belittled.

She offered him a nod and a smile as she took her bag while digging around searching for her phone. With her studies done and over with she could now return or rather move here to Hoenn where the only person of interest left in her life resided. She'd done her best to finish early but it had still managed to take her two years to wrap up four years worth of university experience. Still, rather good for her first real higher educational experience. She quickly tapped a text to Mars to let him know she'd arrived in Sootopolis. "I guess I can have a look around in the meantime." she said to herself softly.

To be frank, the grand majority of people he knew back at Sinnoh are people he would prefer never to encounter in Hoenn. Not out of lack of fondness (not in most cases, at least), but out of lack of trust, for it’s often that those people know things about him that he’d rather not share now. They know Martín Marzán. They know of Natalia. Even if they may not realise as much, they know of his pain and weaknesses.

@kira is no exception to that. In fact, she knows of all those things better than most, and while he had been apprehensive when hearing of her plans to come to Hoenn after finishing her studies, when receiving her text message and meeting her at Sootopolis’ docks, Mars finds himself to be nothing but glad to see her once more.

”Kira!” He smiles at her; he smiles in that way that’s so characteristic of Mars, a smile that comes with natural ease and that’s full of a confidence not many can match. ”How was your flight? Big change of scenery, huh?”

On this spring day, the sun shines bright, Hoenn’s tropical weather showing itself to its fullest extent. Definitely quite different from Galar.

Kira inhaled deeply as she took her walk around the pier. The warm weather was definitely doing wonders for her compared to the weather of Galar. It was a nice change of pace. Not that she hated the cold, far from it. It was just nice to be somewhere else for a while. That being said, she wondered how Mars had been since she'd been gone. She left him at a very vulnerable time but it was at his behest. She would've turned her back on the Syndicate in a heartbeat to help him pay them back for what they had done to her family and Natalia.

But she couldn't argue with Mars' logic either. It wasn't time for it yet. They needed to play their cards correctly because there would be no do-overs. Kira sighed as she ran her fingers through her lime-green hair. "Kira!” A familiar voice called out to her causing her to pause and slowly turn around.

Familiar yet different at the same time. She quickly ran over to close the distance between the two before wrapping her arms around him in an embrace. She'd missed him, terribly so. He was her main motivation for trying so hard to graduate early. It looked like he was doing well, all things considered. He was healthy, still breathing, walking around and smiling at her. If she'd been honest she was nervous to meet him again because she wasn't quite sure how he'd react.

Mars was ever the protective one. Very cautious about who he let into his circle and when. It'd been two years and times changed. She could've easily fallen out of favor with him, and it would've been every bit as terrifying as her nightmares claimed it would be. But standing here with him now felt natural, just like how it used to be.

"How was your flight? Big change of scenery, huh?” She nodded quickly before giving him one last squeeze before releasing him. "Yeah for sure. But it's a welcomed change. Things start to get boring after a couple of years with your nose in the books." She said as she rocked a bit on her heels. "How are you? Been holding up okay?" her tone was cheerful but her gaze was empathizing. Grey hues searched his own amber colored ones for truths left unsaid.

Two years.

At around the same time as he had lost Natalia, Kira had to leave for Galar. He himself had left for Hoenn, and they hadn’t seen each other much in all that time. A lot has changed. Both for him and for her. He can see it as much as he can feel it, and it makes him wonder if Kira notices the same changes in him. Is it obvious, what Hoenn has done to him? How much damage it has caused? The gifts his time in the region has granted him? Mars is curious, but he doesn't ask any of this. He’d rather not discuss such things.

”Oh, tell me about it, I remember my own university days.” He chuckles, but for the most part, all that had been enjoyable for him. Sure, he had had to work hard with his studies for the sake of his personal goals and to keep his family pleased, but it had been his first chance to leave Canalave City and be free. Mars remembers those days fondly, even if now it feels as if an eternity has passed since.

”I’ve been alright. As busy as you can imagine. I did make sure to have rest of the day free, though… Come, let me show you around.”

There’s a smile as he pulls away from her and turns, expecting her to join him.

If there was ever a constant it would be change. So it was inevitable that Mars had changed in these last two years. Silver orbs scanned his person as she waited for his response. The only thing she could tell right now as that he was older. Not to be confused with looking old because he was clearly still in his prime. But he seemed aged from when she last left him. The underlaying exhaustion that was so easily masked but still leaked faint traces through the veil. She couldn't blame him though he was a busy man after all.

As if to confirm her thoughts, he responded, "I’ve been alright. As busy as you can imagine. I did make sure to have the rest of the day free, though… Come, let me show you around.” His smile was infectious as she bowed her head for a moment, a faint smile ghosting her own lips. "I see," she said softly as she gripped her bag tighter.

"I'm glad to hear things are going so well for you here." She said as she followed his lead. She really was glad to hear he was doing alright. She'd been worried for him for so long it was like a heavy weight was finally lifted off her shoulders for the first time in a long time. "So, where to first?"

If only for a second, Mars finds himself wondering if Kira’s words are true; if moving to Hoenn truly was a good change. There’s still grief, there’s still pain, there’s still anger, and hatred, but being away from the people who have caused all those feelings is most definitely better. Having plans is better. Having goals. Having those new ambitions that exist within him thanks to this place he now calls his home.

To the nearest bar,” Mars replied with a smirk. Kira raised an eyebrow at him as her lips pursed in thought. She wasn't a stranger to alcohol, especially in college. Being sober isn't what got her through her classes that was for sure. "We should celebrate your arrival, don’t you think? And also your graduation! It’s long overdue.”

A soft chuckle escapes her lips, "I certainly won't turn down free drinks. Thank you." Kira inhaled deeply while they walked. "It strange, it doesn't even feel like I've graduated." She says as she turns towards him. "I'm like, nervous I'll turn around and a looming final or paper will be behind me" she shakes her head.

"But it's good to be here, and I'm glad to see you too." She said with a bright smile in his direction. "So talk to me about what's kept you busy these last two years." She says as she walks beside him.

”Don’t worry, at some point years from now you’ll wake up panicked and thinking you’re late for school.” He grins at her, teasing, but apparently that’s a real thing that happens to a lot of people. So he has heard, at least, since ever so punctual as Mars may now be, back when he was in school, he didn’t care much for that sort of thing.

Sure, these past couple of years he has woken in a panic more often than not, but that’s for completely different reasons…

Reasons he thinks of when she asks what has been keeping him busy.

”Coping. Grieving.” He wants to say, but he knows he can’t give her that answer.

”You know, fixing things at the bank first. Took some time to expand and increase profit. My other businesses and investments… and this.” He gestures to their surroundings, not meaning just Sootopolis but the fact that this is a Rocket-controlled city. Their city. But, there’s more to it, isn’t there? ”See that huge building up by that cliff? That’s a casino, it opened recently. I’m one of the owners.”

Just hearing that she might wake up in a panic thinking she was late for class sent a cold shiver down her spine. It sounded awful, but such was the life of a post-grad student. "You know, fixing things at the bank first. Took some time to expand and increase profit. My other businesses and investments… and this.” Mars gestured to everything around him. She knew about Rocket and Mars' involvement with that.

Only a little though. A lot couldn't be shared over the phone and she understood why. She also knew about Rocket's occupation of Sootopolis. A lot of people on the outside of Hoenn believed it to be ominous. Only bad could come from something like this. But from what Kira saw, Sootopolis was thriving better than it was before.

"Sounds like you've had your hands full then." Kira quipped softly. That cold be a good thing. If he was busy that means he wouldn't have much time to think about the bad shit that would've been plaguing her had she been in his position. "See that huge building up by that cliff? That’s a casino, it opened recently. I’m one of the owners.” Kira whistled as her gaze followed where he pointed. "Fancy. You'll have to show me around sometime." She said with a soft smile.

"You’ll love it here, Kira." Mars continued. 'I already do because I'm here with you.' Kira thought to herself. "You’ll especially love the lab.” he continued and her eyes widened. "Now we're talking." she said with a wider grin this time. She wondered what Rocket had been busy working on. Just the endless possibilities was enough to make her drool like a kid in a candy store.

"When do I start?" she asked, her eyes practically sparkling.

It’s nice to have her here, perhaps much more than what Mars himself had realised it’d be. In the past, he had told himself that he should help Kira leave this life behind; help her escape from all the suffering and pain neither of them had ever asked for or wanted. But, she had chosen to join Team Rocket just as much as he had, hadn’t she? It’s not like with Sinnoh’s syndicate.

She’s someone he knows he can trust, someone who is reliable, and who will be useful to both himself and Team Rocket.

All those things are true, and so is the fact that having her here worries him. Perhaps she should keep her connection to him hidden, in case of anything…

Mars pauses, turning to look at her.

”You can start as soon as you’re able to, but first I need you to confirm something for me…” He meets her gaze as he has done so many times before, holding it for a long moment. ”Is this really what you want?”

He doesn’t say Team Rocket’s name out loud because there are civilians who might overhear and he’s not disguised at all, but the question is still clear:

One last chance to turn away. She deserves that much, and he needs it for his own peace of mind.

It's the look in Mars' eyes when he pauses to glance at her that causes Kira's smile to slowly fade. "You can start as soon as you’re able to, but first I need you to confirm something for me…” She could tell it was serious by he tone and facial expressions. "Is this really what you want?” he manages to ask after a moment of silence.

Kira involuntarily snorted. "Sorry." she said with a wave as she shook her head. It wasn't meant to be insulting. It was just that the answer to this was so obvious to her she was truly surprised Mars even had to ask. With a soft sigh, Kira placed her bag on the ground and reached for Mars' hand to hold in both of hers.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't." She said before pausing to squeeze his hand and continue. "I'm not that angry and hurt little girl that needed your protection. Or better yet a friend." she smiled though this time it was a bit melancholic as she thought back to her childhood. "While I certainly am still angry, I'm an adult now. And I've been doing fine on my own. But...if you feel like this is too dangerous for me or that I might be better off living my life off somewhere else...I'd like to remind you that you're not the only one that's lost something at the hands of....them."

Kira practically hissed that last line. If her words were the venom in a snakes fangs, hers would be the most potent and dangerous toxin there was. She respected Mars' hesitation and she could understand the desire to want your loved one to be safe and sound. But she needed to remind him that it was already too late. She was in too deep.

Reaching up to cup the side of his cheek. She offered him a more sympathetic smile this time. "Besides. I love you. You're the only family I've got left. I wouldn't leave you alone even in death." She snickered. "I'd just haunt you as a ghost to keep you company." she teased. Before returning back to the serious conversation. Her gaze held his with her fiery determination. "But I meant everything I said to you that day. I made a promise I intend to keep. My soul won't rest until they're dealt with. So I know what I'm getting myself into."

She said before she finally let her hand fall from his face. "And if I can be of any help to you and your comrades along the way I will gladly offer my services." she says as she glances down at her feet. "After all, a friend of yours is a friend of mine." She didn't mention how jealous she was that he had went off and made more friends without her. She just kept that bit to herself.
