They walked past the little Cherry Pokemon where it lay snoozing in the sun, and CJ was glad for Deadlegs’ stoic demeanor. Kinnick would’ve grabbed the thing and run off with it like a tennis ball just for funsies.

Likewise, CJ and Deadlegs moved by the little Togepi with little more than a smile. As cute as the Spike Ball Pokemon was, Calvin was not the type to enjoy duplicates of himself.

They tried to walk by the Nidoran, but the little Pin Pokemon jumped into the air and startled like a rabbit, bolting off into the undergrowth.

"Wish we could've saved her the heart attack," CJ said, a bit sad.

Deadlegs was unaffected.

The little, golden bird made their breath catch. CJ hadn’t caught any shinies before-- had never even seen one; finding one in the wild was just that rare.

Deadlegs crouched in the grass to hunt the creature like a typical feline; the moment it saw her, it leaped to fly, but she was quicker. She brought it down, carefully pinning it to the ground; it flailed its wings for a half-second before CJ collected it in a Pokeball.

“You know,” they said afterwards, in the peace that followed-- the distant calls of Pokemon, the rustle of the wind in the grass, “Kinnick would’ve turned that thing into fried chicken. I’m glad I had you here.” They scratched their Glaceon’s head affectionately.
