as lunar energies manifest before the gardevoir's palms, the wave swells within the tight container of their battlefield.

"monkey bars!" a cryptic command, but obvious enough as noah's hariyama grasps the cage ring's ceiling.

the MOONBLAST slams through the waters, ripping a hole in the torrent. however, the HARIYAMA does not follow the plunge and subsequent flood of a crashing SURF.

"HEAVY SLAM!" the hariyama pushes itself off the metal chainlinks. the ring rattles as it dives toward the gardevoir with all of its weight.

Thankfully the burst of lunar energy had ripped a hole through the tall wave of Surf and allowed it to splash down and around her in a loud, crashing wave.

Whew, one disaster averted—for now.

And now the even ‘bigger’ threat—the Hariyama—that was hanging like a monkey from the top of the cage and looked like it was about to pancake her…

Not today, though!

Her eyes flared for a few moments, before summoning up an equally-large orb of rainbow-colored Psychic energy and hurling it in the incoming path of the falling Hariyama as she made to move off to one side.

• Gardevoir is out on the field!
• the Moonblast had burst a hole through the tall wave of water; and she looked up at the incoming Hariyama taking a dive before retaliating with a powerful Psychic burst!

"too slow! propel yourself with FORCE PALM!"

to amass another MOONBLAST's energy in that small window of time is a risky feat, especially in quarters as close as these. the hariyama evades it with the speed of his wave.

the SURF collides with the caged fencing; chainlinks filter the brine as noah's hariyama presses its palms together.

a FORCE PALM is fired behind the hariyama, propelling the pokemon toward the sidestepping gardevoir in hope of striking it.

+ hariyama propels self toward gardevoir to strike it physically with a force palm as propulsion.

All she had to do was to look straight ahead. That was it, really.

And see the Hariyama coming right at her from within the cage, literally ready to squash her flat!

Her eyes widened in surprise—and to be honest, so did Lars’s as well. For the first time, his ‘calm’ broke…

“Lynette, don’t get backed in a corner!” he shouted, finally breaking the silence, clenching his fists where he stood as he watched, and hoping that she was smart enough to work her way out of this. Hopefully…

A sudden burst of rainbow-colored energy erupted in front of her as she took the Force Palm attack, being forced backwards before extending her arms out and hurling the chunk of Psychic energy at the Hariyama.

• Gardevoir is out on the field!
• Lynette gets hit by the Force Palm and is forced backward, before lashing back with a Psychic burst of energy in retaliaition!

noah's smile deepens—and not at the sight of his pokemon's FORCE PALM landing, no. rather, it is the way laurence and his pokemon stand their ground.

he recalls the way the head ranger had briefly fled from the sight of Cillian Quinn and his shadow lugia in midst shifting sootopolis stone. how the feeling of abandonment, twisted incredulity bore into his gut in the deluge.

but laurence leans into what noah wants to teach. to stand one's guard even when backed up against the wall.

the PSYCHIC burst strikes noah's hariyama and in the wake of a brilliant lilac firework, the wrestler is downed.

"man... good job, fong."

noah recalls his hariyama, places the weary warrior into his holster before thrusting his arm into the air for a celebratory wave.

"lars! you did it, man! you got me!" noah pulls his badge out carefully, the interlocking boxing gloves vibrant underneath the stagelights. "proud of ya."

He knew that Lynette was pretty much teetering and on her last legs, however fact of the matter that sheer determination would actually win out and get him the victory?

That caught him off-guard, to be honest!

“To be fair, you actually had me when your other Pokémon knocked my Metagross to his figurative knees,” he cackled quietly as he approached, disbelief on his face as he made sure to confirm that this was the real deal, the actual badge.

“Damn, I actually won?”

The disbelief was still on his face.

“Most of my victories are from non-traditional methods due to my work as a Ranger, mostly—man versus nature, thinking outside the box. But… well, at least I know I can hold my own within traditional battling!”

noah's satisfied smile greets the head ranger's shock. he loosens the muscles of his arms, stretching them toward the ceiling. at one of their ends, the badge is held.

the badge descends. carefully perched between two fingers, noah extends it to lars.

"'course you can. just need to be confident like you were just now."

noah says. he moves toward laurence, getting close so that the gravity of his words is inescapable.

"team rocket knows how you fight, lars. they'll take advantage of that. don't stay in your comfort zone. got it?"

He wondered where that confidence had come from.

Surely there was more of it hidden away somewhere.

Lars could only guess if Noah knew the entire situation of what happened when Sootopolis was taken and they had to make a run for it because they were overrun… maybe the other would understand. Or maybe not. Either way, that had happened so long ago now.

“If only it was this easy getting a win!” he joked a few moments later as he picked up the badge. Another one to add to his collection—but he was far from over from this entire thing.
