dismounting, greyson's weight thuds against the soil below, leaving impressions of his time here. nagi's question comes swimingly, sweat beading the gym-leaders brow. he points deeper into the woods.

small footsteps trail a path, small and aimless, leading further in. not far, but just enough to be out of sight by the brush.

"go!" he urges, shuffling pokeballs, "i'll be right behind you." just after he finds the right pokemon!

twigs catch at nagi's ankles as he scrambles down the path, feet slipping over loose pebbles. adrenaline turns the instinctive protest of his exhausted muscles down to the low hum of background noise.[break][break]

the faint imprint of small, stumbling feet grows clearer the further into the brush he ventures, until they end at the side of a dry, leafless bush. [break][break]

beneath it, is a familiar, matching yellow shoe. [break][break]

nagi's knees hit the dirt even before his brain has processed the scene. on his hands and knees, he peers under the bush, searching. he doesn't have to look for long: even spackled with mud, the bright red of the boy's shirt stands out from the dull, earthen grey of the dirt.[break][break]

he inches himself further under the cover the bush, and sprawls on his belly by the boy, close enough that he can see the slow rise and fall of his chest. his hands hover — should i move him? what if he hurt his spine?[break][break]

did greyson have anything that could help?[break][break]

"here," nagi calls out. his voice echoes, carrying shrill and far in the still quiet. "he's here. breathing, but unconscious."[break][break]

behind him, he hears the sound of descending wingbeats, and the whomp of a heavy landing. smaug had caught up.

greyson descends nearly right behind the other man. a comfey clings to his wrist, but pulls itself down his hand, and moves towards the unmoving child. its mews of concern are a precursor to the FLORAL HEALING.

greyson checks his pulse in the meantime.

"i think he's mainly dehydrated," a red stain around his mouth that he first thought was blood, answers his other questions. "looks like the kid foraged a bit. was able to eat and keep moving."

he smiles, impressed.

"not bad, kid."
[break][break]
pushing himself to his feet, greyson takes out a SAT phone. in moments he's given the signal that they'd found him, and to follow the psychic-thread left behind by his braviary.

in minutes, they would arrive. but, in the meantime.

"you did good today, nagi. should be proud of yourself."

“oh thank fu—u_uu.” [break][break]

relief explodes out of nagi in one unfiltered exhale, muffled at the tail end with a dirt-specked hand pressed over his mouth. nothing like topping off their rescue by teaching the child how to cuss via subconscious suggestion. [break][break]

heaving himself up onto his arms, he shimmies out from under the bush and flops back to sag boneless against smaug. he feels strung out. heavy. adrenaline petering out, leaving a trail of overworked muscles in its wake, greyson’s next words catch him off-guard and unwary. [break][break]

“i, that. ah.” he raises a jelly-like arm, shaking it as if trying to physically bat the unexpected praise out of the air. “it was all your braviary. we’d never have gotten here without her.”[break][break]

her psychic ping had been the turning point — he’d still be combing the grass on his hands and knees, miles away from where they should be without it. [break][break]

a stray thought catches up with him. he murmurs, absently: “i… don’t think i told you my name before.”

greyson pats the bird good naturedly, and the great eagle trills in a way that tickles not only the ear, but also parts of the brain. it was odd.

"uh, yeah.. about that, when braviary did their little ping, he kind of shared some extra information. namely... your name. hope that's cool."

cool understates it. nagi has questions, curiosity thrumming with his quickened pulse, as he peers up at luminous eyespots adorning the braviary’s crown — but interrogating greyson while sprawling boneless by the unconscious form of a lost child isn’t good form, by any means.[break][break]

he tips his heavy head back, resting it against an uncharacteristically-obliging smaug; in a few minutes, he’ll either have to wheedle his dragonite into carrying him the rest of the way home, or spend the rest of day getting acquainted with the dirt.[break][break]

all that’s left now is the luxury of waiting.
