For Katherine and Kyle to be paired up on any official, League-requested assignment, something serious needs to happen. A second invasion of aliens, a gigantic interdimensional pokemon appearing in Slateport, a full-blown Rocket attack on a city... Something along those lines.

"i won't be surprised to know if it's just a show to enforce protocols of working with at least a pair," kyle answers nonchalantly as he goes. "how many people have you seen go for something big, only to have nothing but luck to back it up?"

kyle can be heard groaning afterwards.

"then think of themselves highly just for surviving those encounters."

even kyle doesn't have that much confidence in himself, mostly scraping by instead of having definite wins. he's thankful of people who make subtle, but meaningful moves, over those that make grand entrances and showy moves that force others to work around those actions.

he shakes his head, trying to get thoughts brought by stress away from it.

with a shrug, he turns to katherine. there was nothing to be done with the wasted effort besides make the best use of it. "either way, your counterpart's gone. wanna see if we can find mine?"

"well, when you put it like that..." plenty, katherine thinks. she's seen plenty of people with nothing but luck backing their experiences. but it's better left unsaid. there's no pleasure in assaulting someone's character and feats when they aren't here to hear it straight from her.

unlike kyle, however, katherine does have that absolute confidence in herself. she's cocky, proud and undeniably vain. he should already know that.

"what? no!" kyle responds, appearing shocked despite fully recognizing that it wasn't a joke on katherine's side.

"two things. if he's like me, then he's gonna talk, unlike everyone else coming from the portal. it's like working to end the problem from the source kinda thing. defeating waves and waves of these people is just so much work. might as well work with sea!kyle."

blind loyalty to their leader, arrogance of their skill to incite aggression and other factors make every other character a risk to approach. then again, the lack of commitment and drive for their side's victory is the one thing kyle clings on as the saving grace of his counterpart

"two, he's a kyle. we can't kill him."

while the message can be interpreted in other ways, what kyle means is closer to the affection he had with anything that resembles his personality, quirks, and, to a lesser extent, appearance.

he smiles at the comment, trying to act cheeky with it, before he goes with the plan.

releasing a mightyena, kyle takes an empty dive ball and nudges it towards the pokemon. the pokemon sniffs it before it looks up to kyle, wherein it sees him mouth something.

excessive energy seemed to be released from the pokemon as it performs a z-move. only the initial moment of its activation would imply of its status, but the move takes in effect in mere seconds nonetheless.

MIGHTYENA: MOON MOON
NORMAL-TYPE
mightyena's senses are amplified immensely, allowing it to accurately track a target's scent trail for a moderate amount of time.

the mightyena follows a path right away without the need to check the trail once in a while, like most accurate depictions of trained hunting dogs. their target is within the same plane as them for now, at least.

"it's one of those pokeballs we saw back then," kyle explains, pocketing the dive ball. "i gave one to my counterpart."

as it follows the trail, kyle notices that his pokemon drags them to the heart of where the weird water pokemon were reported to be patrolling. an audible sigh can be heard when kyle figures out they were going to be fighting still, after all.

at some point, whilst still following mightyena, katherine opts to release sableye. they were fairly close to where they've been asked to go, so she figured the sea!pokemon would turn up sooner or later.

"he has darkrai," kyle points out. "if he was me, which i guess is true, i'd probably just slink back into the shadows."

his eyes go to her sableye.

"we're not even sure if they also have mega evolution to anticipate if he knows about magic bounce." if they do try to get them to fall asleep, that is.

he continues to walk, taking a while to formulate an answer for katherine's first question.

"i mean, at the end of the day, they're a different person. just, uh, similar personalities. it's like me stopping you for doing katherine things, or something like that."

when he notices that he starts talking a bit more philosophical despite not intending it to be, he immediately backtracks and switches into another topic for them.

"a-and going back to the stealing part, that's something we can ask him once we meet him too. they're not exactly pokeballs if you noticed. it emerged from inside them or something. kinda freaky if you ask me."

he does notice the shift in his behavior over decisions he's made, though he cannot pinpoint the origin of the change. it doesn't bother him though, owing to a more carefree personality he's had since then.

"i only got champion from seniority so that argument doesn't work." he quips as a banter as they near. "but don't try weird things, please. we're already banking on a chance. let's not turn that to impossibility."

he pauses as he ponders on such possibilities.

"or maybe he'll be easy with you. i'm not really sure if he hates their version of you or not." he'd owe her one of he did.

the mightyena stops walking, fur bristling at its ends as it signals incoming danger. despite hiding from plain sight, the pokemon drops on the ground asleep.

a darkrai emerges from the shadow, eyeing the two of them, with its trainer following behind it shortly after. kyle freezes for an instant before he shushes everyone, his index finger going on top of his mouth.

the other kyle tenses as well, more wary of katherine than kyle with the way he glares at her.

"we're not supposed to be interacting, you know," he tells both kyle and katherine. "if you're here to talk me into trying to convince the queen to stop, then you're not going to get too far by talking to me."

kyle looks at his doppelganger, then to katherine, before turning back.

"it's no use, huh?"

the other kyle shrugs.

"this attack's going to happen anyways. can you guys, just, you know, give what you owe us to get this over with?"

"nope. don't give me more responsibilities, please. i'd rather not get interrogated for the authenticity of this information." if they can sweat, he probably would've. "best i can do is tell them that you have information about it. they can do the negotiations instead."

kyle smiles. reading between the lines, and keeping social interaction to a minimum is the kyle he knows best.

"look, he's harmless. i like him."

"gay. anyways, you guys really need to go. i would have to actually get in a fight if they see me talking with you guys, and they'll expect me to go full force."
