The beauty and bane of Hoenn's tournaments were that they brought together all kinds. Friend/Foe, Husband/Wife, Mentor/Student.

First Hideo Kino caught his attention, a special child with a special grasp for pokémon. He'd thought to push the boy towards some limelight as a standout trainer in Hoenn, but Cait thought better of it. His childhood should be his own, not the League's. So, he left well enough alone.

He had similar eyes on John Sullivan ; he was older, rougher but he was homegrown Viridian, and his potential was raw. He aimed to recruit the youngster into the Rangers but you couldn't teach old dogs new tricks and the Kanto refugees all grew up faster than they should have. His life was the soldier's life, and there was no steering him away from it.

Both of them took their own paths and to this day, they were stronger for it.

Xander Belmont was a different case. Xander was the one who accepted his mentor-ship, looked to him for growth, thought higher of him.

With his arms crossed Sénon stared down the other redhead and his Duramaka. From any perspective that wasn't his own it might have seemed like animosity, or something at least standoffish but the truth of it was,

-he couldn't have been more proud of the Belmont.

Xander found his place in the region, he planted his feet and became a immovable fixture in the region, a human volcano. It was just as Sénon told him it could be. One step at a time, he walked away from stagnation.

Now he was a Gym Leader, and one of the Ranger's Elite.

No thanks to Sénon. His tutelage had been far more hands-off than he intended, so much so Xander found a mentor elsewhere.

He was happy Xander Belmont rose to all occasions and found a purpose for his fire even without Sénon to stoke and temper it.

But the Head Ranger gave his word that he would, and Xander succeeding without him didn't let him off the hook for his failures or shortcomings.

Looking at the guy now just made him hot and annoyed.

The smoldering stare he donned to watch the fighting stage wasn't contempt and heat for Xander, it was for himself.
However, Sénon wasn't the one fighting, Dosé was. (

Dosé didn't begrudge himself for his failures, and Dosé didn't get hot.

Dosé only got busy.

At the moment of the announcer's start of the match, the croagunk free-styled the battle for itself, as Sénon promised he could.

Ranger Dex entry; Croagunk. A poison wielder with a dastardly personality. It rarely fights fairly, but that is strictly to ensure survival. Despite such qualities, it is a well known mascot and afforded a measure of popularity worldwide due to its peculiar cry and comical features.

Slipping past the larger pokémon, Dosé sought to claim his victory straight away, with an attempt to shut down the fire-type's organs with a precisely placed POISON JAB.

Of all the trainers in Hoenn to face, he hadn't expected Senon. The man guided him at his lowest. Xander was weak when they met a year ago. Nothing but a young man fleeing from his problems. Unsure of himself and his purpose in the world. [break][break]

Senon's advice on that day lit a flame in his heart that Xander's continued to stoke. Every day the words echo, growing louder during moments of doubt.[break][break]

Walk Xander did. Straight to being Ranger, to becoming a Gym Leader. But the road continued, and he'd walk it until his feet bled, removing any obstacle he encountered along the way, even if that included Sénon Game. The burning gaze of his golden suns cemented that resolve.[break][break]

Darmanitan shared Xander's passion. He faced the Croagunk head-on. His massive muscles BULKING-UP to counter the toxic jab.[break][break]

Dosé was one of Sénon's few pokémon whom had a stronger Gameface than Ranger Game himself.

He seemed to have missed the knockout blow by a sliver of a sliver. Or more accurately, the opponent's BULK UP just barely provided enough resistance to keep the POISON JAB from landing properly.

Now, it was flexing its defensive prowess.

The croagunk's face didn't express any distress or distaste but his sudden, slowed movements expressed a certain SWAGGER and pride despite not ending the match in one shot.

Outstretching one froggy arm it made its unwavering confidence apparent to its equally yolked opponent.

With his arms still crossed Sénon watched on as Dose made his own creative battle decisions.

Cheeky as he was, Dosé wasn't yet all he could be while the Head Ranger kept him restricted to the species he was born unto.

For as long he was Croagunk rather than Toxicroak, Dosé was slower, weaker and less reactive than he otherwise could have been.

In a martial arts bout like this one without full access to his poison moveset, the Croagunk was at an indisputable size disadvantage. Case in point...

Being so much smaller than its opponent a BULK UP might not have done the trick; it was forced to defend from the incoming ZEN HEADBUTT with a QUICK GUARD instead.

The pain shot through the frogs arms as he managed to block the psychically charged headbutt. His arms felt heavy but when he willed them to move, they still moved.

The fighting frog took the follow-up; a flaming fist, face first, The croagunk's skin drying out to the point of cracking.

The fiery punch had less power behind it than the Headbutt, the difference made the Poison/Fighting type weary of warding off another headbutt from a head that size.

In a fit of REVENGE Dosé wiped the bit of blood from its TOXIC MOUTH using its fist before throwing that same bloodied fist at the gut of the Darmanitan.

He moves back in for another ZEN HEADBUTT. The same purple flames erupt from his eyebrows, and he brings his massive noggin down fast and hard.
