in his first few weeks of being a ranger, ollie learned two things. first of all, being a ranger was a lot more complicated than he thought it was going to be. for one, there were a lot of drills and most of them, his squad leader was a total stank-face in them. he'd thought he would be doing more field work! but nooo, cadets had to train first before just being released into the wilderness. or something like that.

[break][break] second, his partner (or the man that had accidentally become his partner, for nothing more than the fact of accidental run-ins the two had during their multiple drills) was super cool. but also totally obssessed with some place called altomare. not that ollie really minded — he missed kanto sometimes too!

[break][break] he shows up to their meeting spot with a suspiciously familiar outfit — or at least, that was what Laurence Anderson would likely think. (had lars checked to see if one of his old uniforms was missing from his closet, from that one time they'd stopped by his house after a drill because ollie just had to use the bathroom?)

Holy fuck.

Why was he short one—?!

He’d already ripped his ass through the entire flat searching for one of his old uniforms—he was absolutely certain that he’d packed all of them along and had brought them—oh, shit, what if one of the boxes had gotten lost when he’d moved back to Hoenn from Alto Mare?!

But the thing is, he was a very thorough packer, and had made sure that all of his clothes and what little personal effects he’d gathered from his six years back there had all made the—

“Man, what the hell?” he exclaimed, realizing just where the missing uniform had disappeared off to.

(Well, he was wearing one of the others, but—)

“At least our stick in the mud squad leader isn’t here,” he said with a huff as he looked around furtively before reaching into a pocket and pulling out a box of slims, and a lighter.

“D’you mind if I light up a bit before we head in?”

he grins, cheeky. "what's up bud? something wrong?"

[break][break] while their other bright orange uniforms were at the dry-cleaners (because despite what their squad leader had said, there was some money in the budget for that), ollie had thought it would be hilarious to dress up in the alto-mare uniform. the only problem was... he only knew one way to get it. in the end, the young cadet was sure that his friend wouldn't mind. too much, at least.

[break][break] the blue on him isn't quite his color, as he much prefers golds and yellows, but the white and blue does give a pleasant contrast to his bright green eyes.

[break][break] ollie chuckles. "man, you really hate him huh — woah! no way!" in a flash, ollie slaps the cigarette out of the other's hand, leaving it to fall in the soggy snow. "you can't be smoking! we're rangers, dude."

“Ever since the first exercise? Can’t you tell?” he replied with a bark of laughter that echoed through the cave.

Just as he was about to light the stick he’d plucked out of the box—

“Wha—hey!” he exclaimed as he fumbled to catch it but alas, it was too late; the poor cigarette was already in the snow, soggy and pretty much unusable.

“What was that for?!” he exclaimed—before he remembered… right. This wasn’t Alto Mare…

“Look, if there’s something you oughta know,” he remarked, “…it’s the fact that back where I come from, as long as we clean up after ourselves, then we can do this… plus… nonno got me started on this, how else can I destress?”

…this was why sometimes, Ollie, Lars took a little longer to show up whenever they were going on field training together. Because he would have one smoke before heading out.

“So… what did he send us out here for today?”

Because to be honest, he’d had to undo a lot of his Alto Marean Ranger training—as it mostly involved bodies of water and all that.

[break][break] the two have had this argument before — maybe not so obviously, but ollie is fairly sure the other knows how much he's against that sorta stuff. especially because of the fact that they're rangers. smoking was ruining the environment! not to mention his lungs.

[break][break] "i'll let you do it this one time. i'll look away." folding his arms, ollie frowns — a rare sight for the normally cheerful brunette. he perks up as the other changes topic, asking him what they were here for.

It’s one of those… y’know, seeing it for yourself would get the point across,” he said as he (regretfully) pocketed the lighter.

He’d forgotten that ever since he’d gotten caught by Ollie, the other was adamant on him not lighting up. Can’t a man have his peace, though?

He’d have to hold out, at least until after they were done here.

“Well, Alto Mare’s somewhere around the Johto region area, so that’s another place to add to your travel itinerary,” he nodded as they began the trek into the cavern’s depths.

Shit, how many hours did they have again for low tide…?

It isn’t until they’re past several caverns did he remember to ask—

“How long’s the time between low tide and the next high tide?” he asked from out of nowhere as he continued to rub his hands together—damn, this place was fucking cold! Not to mention—how could such a place exist within a tropical region like Hoenn?

A curious anomaly, indeed…

Then he also remembered to ask something else.

“D-d’you got a Fire-type on you?” he mumbled, teeth chattering.

“D-d-d-damn, this place is fucking c-c-c-cold…”

Was he fazed by the other? Not really, considering that he… he already had a suspicion that he wasn’t as… straight as he thought he was.

Thank the fucking hell they’d found the Spheal ‘colony’, and not too soon—how he hated second-guessing the coming and going of the tides in this cave.

Sometimes, it would just sneak up on you by surprise.

“What the—” he trailed off, alarmed at the little… leech-like things that were crawling all over them.

“Can you check if all of them have the same… the same infection?”

He then felt a cold sweat run down his back. Ah, shit, he was on the fence telling the other man about his… rather extreme aversion to insects of any kind.

Especially if they were like this.

"yeah! you two. the faster we do this, the faster we can get outta this. do you think we could get some froyo on the way home?"

[break][break] ollie still remained oblivious to the others plights, as he hops down to one of the spheals. immediately, the pokemon roll towards him and the ranger finds himself picking one up.

[break][break] he plucks off the leech-like creatures with ease. "i gotchu buddy," he says, patting the young spheal. once the pokemon is "cured", it lets out a happy squeal before rolling into the nearby pool with a splash.

Too late, too late, too fucking late—

One of the Spheal had rolled over to him, cute little things that they were, but…

Shit, why did the one that had the most number of those black parasites have to approach him?! Gulping, he mentally screamed as he picked up the dual-type and began plucking away—the parasites. As fast as humanly possible.

Never mind if the slimy, sticky sensation all over his fingers sent shivers running up and down his spine—he was just that freaked the fuck out!

So much, he’d almost missed what the other guy had asked him.

“Wha? Oh… yeah, sure…” he replied absentmindedly, continuing to pluck away at every single danged thing as fast as he could before one of them had the afterthought of sticking to his fingers and sucking him dry instead.
