nah, i'll be aight. aaron is made up of the kind of stubborn-for-no-reason that makes men walk around in blizzards in shorts or wander a forest in circles instead of asking another trainer for directions. he arrives at rustboro gym with a backpack of not clothes and a pikachu tucked under one arm. she kicks her paws in a useless bid to wiggle free as he heads up the steps, eventually becoming a dramatic lump of dead weight as he passes through the doors.

"yo!" aaron lifts his chin in greeting. they're both pushing thirty, but they sound more like a couple of teenage boys passing each other in the hall. at the mention of his pikachu, he glances down at her.

"hey, at least someone does," he jokes. electricity flashes through his arm, enough to make his muscles seize painfully, but he stomachs it with a wince.

the swinub oinks. aaron's eyes are pulled from CIAN MAHER 's face to the little pig tucked under his armpit. oh fuck. he looks down at his pikachu again. she's looking up at him knowingly. this isn't the type matchup they'd practiced for. still, cian and his little bastard are waiting for the challenge to start.

"uhhh, gimme a sec to consult my partner first." turning around, he pulls pikachu out from under his arm and holds her in front of his face by the armpits. she dangles bonelessly as he draws her closer so they can look each other in the eye. [break][break]
"listen, i need you to find a way to pull this win out of your ass, got it?" he whispers rather loudly. "you can't use electricity against a swinub so our new game plan is to bite the shit out of it or something, okay?"

he clears his throat and turns around. "uh, yeah, i'm ready now." and then he places his pikachu on the ground.[break][break]

aaron can't help the shitty matchup. [break][break]well, he could've a little bit if he had done any research about this gym beyond searching for the link to make an appointment, but some greater power beyond he and CIAN MAHER imagination had demanded he stick with the rat instead of allow him to claim her as a spectator at the last moment. [break][break]sucks, but aaron intends to make the most of it. even if that means spamming quick attack for five more posts. with any luck, cian will fall asleep from boredom mid-match and he can loot his body for
a badge.[break][break]
on the sidelines, cian's glalie summons a cloud overhead, hail plinking as it hits the floor and bounces. the air grows chilly. aaron puts on a brave face in his very fashionable three-inch shorts, beautiful thigh muscles bulging as he flexes them in the cold.

pikachu loses sight of swinub in the hailstorm, wincing at the sting of cold, hard ice as it rains down on her. slowing to a stop, she squints and looks around, only to be ambushed by a hiss of icy wind a moment later. her limbs feel heavy with cold, weighed down by the ice that forms in clumps in her fur.

with a shiver, she rushes in toward where she thinks the attack came from. it's another hit-and-run quick attack.

his pikachu smacks into a ball of mud instead of swinub, knocking her off her paws somewhere in a disorienting veil of ice and snow. she scrambles upright as soon as she has the heartbeat of time to think to do so. [break][break]
the quick attack spam continues. mud and ice cling to her fur, weighing her down significantly, as she zips around the snowy arena. ears pricked for the shuffle of paws, the shift of wooly fur against the floor, she waits for her moment to dive in at where she thinks swinub is again. [break][break]
this time, though, she intends to jump on its back and bite and rabbit kick ineffectually. a little spice to sprinke on her usual hit-and-run quick attack tactics.

aaron can't see shit, but he hopes his pikachu is doing her best. she probably has a few iq points on him so she must be holding it down in there. the chill gets to him, raising goosebumps on his arms and making him want to chatter his teeth. clenching his jaw shut, he small talks CIAN MAHER through gritted teeth, "you must save on your ac bill, huh, bro?"

QUICK ATTACK connects, sending swinub skidding across the ground that's since been covered with ice. shards dig into its skin, damaging as it struggles to get back up.[break][break]

"oh, sick, hehe!" aaron didn't even realize devon corp still existed. or maybe some guy named devon splits rental costs on this building. either way, good for CIAN MAHER for getting his bills paid by another man. he could relate — he has Greyson Connors. he and cian are basically the same person.

the swinub slides away from the impact of the quick attack. aaron's pikachu slides after it, stiff-limbed and awkward, tiny claws digging into the ice to slow herself to a stop.

"don't give up either!" aaron parrots encouragingly. a you little rat hangs off the end of his words, a thought that never gets past his lips. "give 'em another quick attack!"[break][break]
his pikachu is already run down, so the order to use the same attack again weathers her spirit. if anyone wandered over to watch the fight when it began, they've definitely all dispersed by now.

an icy wind hisses out from somewhere in the haze surrounding her. ears pricked toward the sound, she tries to duck out of the way, sliding across ice on unsteady paws as a bitter wind cuts across her back.[break][break]
digging her nails in, she pivots into a scrambling run towards the swinub. her legs come out from underneath her and her one millionth quick attack becomes a dizzying spinout in the direction the pig had fired its icy wind from.

somehow, the little rat's dizzying attempt at a QUICK ATTACK ends up working in its favor as it intercepts swinub's attempted duck out of the way. slammed, the wind's knocked out of swinub as it skids across the ground.[break][break]
